Given how huge the changelog on the unofficial patch is, I'd say it's a necessity for actually enjoying the game. I can go without the Content Restoration stuff, but still.

Right, but there's a difference between "unpatched", "fully officially patched" and "unofficial patch". I agree that unpatched may be seriously problematic, but I don't remember any significant issues when I played it with only the official patch years ago. Glancing at the unofficial patch, I really only see a ton of nitpicky items and nothing major. Unless anyone knows of anything in particular?

If you were able to play through with the official patch that works for me. Is it available anywhere? NMA has the latest official patch www.nma-fallout.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=82As well as the unofficial one www.nma-fallout.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=704If you're using the GOG or Steam copy, or even latest physical releases (latest being around 2005-2010) like the Fallout Collection from Ubisoft, the game should come with the latest patch. To sum it up: - Dont play unpatched Fallout 2 - Official patch is good enough and it fixes the biggest bugs in the game. I've finished the game with vanilla patches. - If you want more fixes, then might as well go with the unofficial one. I dont agree that its a necessity though. The patched game is not as buggy as say, Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines. EDIT: However, one thing that the unofficial patch really fixes is the travelling bug, whereby you could move around the world map faster than intended.

So since I'm pretty sure by now Fallout 2's won by now, let me drop some basic tips.
I can't really give you any detailed advice for character creation, since it's all going to come down to the kind of build you're wanting. Some general advice, though:
- You probably don't want many of your stats to drop below 5. I'm PRETTY sure you could possibly get away with dropping your Charisma by one, maybe. It's especially important to make sure your Intelligence doesn't go below 5. Well, you CAN, but you probably don't want to your first time out. - I can't say for sure if any of the traits you can pick at character creation seem worth it, but I dunno... I tried Gifted, myself, and the skill penalties you get made it so hitting ANYTHING was a major pain in the butt. - Quick combat tip: Combat movement may be turn-based, but non-combat movement is not. Enemies can engage combat whenever they want when they see you, so you might want to spend a second getting in a better position before the game goes into combat mode. - Yes, the Temple of Trials sucks. But if you're thorough killing all the enemies and disabling the floor plates with your Traps skill, you'll probably have either enough or just about enough for a level by the time you finish. - When you find the explosives in the temple, whatever you do, make sure you DROP them after you set them. It ALSO works if you put them in one of your weapon slots and use them that way.

Out of all the traits, I've found Fast Shot most useful. If you have 8 action points, you'll be able to shoot twice during battles with most pistols and rifles. Its a good plus unless you're into trying to shoot everyone in the eyes or groin.
Small Frame is also useful, provided that you can find other ways to increase the amount of weight you can carry (more strength or with perks) or that you'll survive long enough until you get party members or car in which you can stash your stuff in. Or just carry less stuff, whatever works.
Good Natured sounds something preferred for pacifist runs and the like, but if you tag one or two useful weapon skills and keep raising them aggressively you'll lose that penalty in no time and you're left with nice boost for your first aid, doctor, speech and barter.
Bloody Mess and Sex Appeal are kind of filler perks, which you can pick up if you cant decide which perks to go with and while Sex Appeal does have effect on gameplay, I never found it making too much of a impact. Same with Chem Resistant and Chem Reliant if you're planning on not using any drugs.

So I suggest we should each post whichever character we generate. Having played the typical small-guns user last time, I decided to create something a bit different. I went with Melee Weapons, Throwing Weapons and Traps as my tagged skilled. I plan to tag "Big Guns" midway through the game when I can get a fourth skill. Since I went male last time, I created a female character for this run. Here's the starting character sheet: FALLOUT VAULT-13 PERSONNEL RECORD 25 July 2241 0824 hours
Name: Julianna Age: 32 Gender: Female Level: 01 Exp: 0 Next Level: 1,000

Intelligence: 06 Damage Res.: 000% Agility: 07 Radiation Res.: 012% Luck: 05 Poison Res.: 030%
::: Karma ::: Karma: 0 (Wanderer)
::: Reputation ::: Arroyo: Idolized

::: Inventory ::: 1x Spear
Total Weight: 4 lbs.
Use the "Print" button in the character screen in order to save a text file of your character sheet. EDIT: So I finished the temple of trials and more or less remembered how to play. Here are some basic things that may not be immediately obvious if you aren't reading the manual ahead of time : - Right click to switch cursors between move, attack and interact. The interact cursor (arrow) has multiple options if you click and hold on an item. This is how you use/search things.
- Press F1 for the help screen. It will tell you all the hotkeys.
- Contrary to Bobinator's advice, the game WILL automatically drop explosives if you place them in your weapon slot and use them from there (outside the inventory interface). Make sure you're standing right in front of the door, and set a timer like 10-20 seconds. You don't want to be waiting around for a minute just to blow up a door.

I didn't bother creating a character this time around, figuring that the game's prefabs would be a better bet for somebody who doesn't know all the ins and outs of the game. So, I am playing the game as Narg, the mostly-warrior.
Also as another "handy trick", I found out that if you hold down the SHIFT key, it will highlight items on the ground in bright yellow. Especially handy if you throw your weapon somewhere and can't quite get hold of it.

My second attempt at a range-focused build, this time without Gifted. Hoping for the best! Oh, by the way, be sure to spend some time looking around Arroyo. There's a couple of side quests you can do for extra XP, and there's even a free boost you can get for Melee Weapons and Unarmed. Also, don't bother giving Aunt Morlis your healing powders. You can get what she has for just a few caps, if you click on the Barter button. This'll probably be the last few tips I'll give for a while, but it should make it so you have a much better chance from the start. Also, here's something to think about. Where did Arroyo get an ancient temple, complete with Indiana Jones-style dart traps? I mean, sure, I'll buy the fact that there's a village of spear-weilding tribesmen in the American Midwest. I can work with that. But did they build the temple? Was it already there before the bombs hit?

It does, but I was still having some pretty big showstopping bugs in my first couple attempts at starting the game proper. That's why I sought out the unofficial.

I decided to create a time traveling gunslinger just to give me a little bit of focus as to who I am trying to create, essentially a western gunslinger in Fallout 2 Wasteland (hence my character's name). I picked Gifted as the trait because the extra skill point to every category was just too tempting to not select. Funny thing, I picked the unarmed skill as one of initial skills just to fit with the character but it has really helped me out in the early game. I've never gotten very far in the game but I assume that the unarmed skill will be virtually worthless in the late game, but in the early going with my only other weapon a spear it has helped out immensely. With my high AP, I'm able to punch enemies in the head up to three times in a single turn at a 60% or so success rate. The spear does do better damage, but since it costs about 4 AP and my success rate is only about 30%, I haven't used it much and punching has been go to attack. I'm hoping it will last until I finally get a gun or other small arm.

Unarmed does not become completely useless late game if you manage to find power fist. There's also opportunity in one of mid-game cities to get a boost for that skill.
