If you want a quick way to get lot of guns and bullets early on, but dont want to trade or spend any money on them, and dont have any problems with killing somewhat innocent person, you could kill a merchant named Flick in Den and take his whole inventory. You don't take too big of a hit on your karma and since the whole town is on Jet no one will turn on you. The only downside I cant think of is that he's a good source of ammo and one of the few one's until you head towards east (There's Tubby too, but he deals mostly in drugs and he seems to generate less ammo in his stock).
It is really tempting when you consider that sometimes he spawns with shotgun, desert eagle, 33. magnum, plenty of ammo for all 3 and a leather armor. His inventory varies, but usually there's at least 2 guns.

I rerolled yesterday and had a better time than my first attempt. I'm having an easier time than my first roll, but I'm not sure I picked the right stuff - on hand to hand fights or weapon fights I'm still only hitting 1 out of every 3 attacks. Is the hit rate just really, really, really low in this game? Also, how is one-handed as a trait? I was hoping it would improve my weapon use but I haven't seen any real benefit so far. What kind of weapon do you want to use? Ranged Weapons? Melee combat? Lots of noncombat skills, or straightforward hack-n-slash character? I wouldn't mind giving some tips on a character build if you can give me a general idea of what kind of character you want. You were lots of help on the Deus Ex podcast, so I definitely wouldn't mind the help, thanks! I'd heard pistols were good and wanted to use those, but also wanted to have either (both?) good melee or weapon skills to save on ammo when possible (also, it wouldn't be too bad to be able to go through the temple of trials without spending 3 hours dealing with crap fighting results). Is it bad to aim for two combat types like that, or is it best to pick one or the other? I don't want to manage a big party, so I was going for limited Charisma (so I could put more points into other stuff). Overall my play style is hack and slash.

Okay, try something like this:
TRAITS:
One Hander Gifted
STATS:
STR - 5 PER - 7 (Can be increased by 1 later to get 8 PER for the Sniper perk) END - 6 CHR - 4 INT - 9 AGI - 10 LUK - 6
TAG SKILLS:
Melee Small Guns Speech
This will allow you to qualify for the most important perks, gives you a small HP boost, and allows for up to two followers.
For the first few levels, your skill points are going to go into Melee until about 100~120 skill, followed by Small Guns until ~130 skill. After that, split your skill points between your noncombat skills (especially Speech ) and Small Guns until you're comfortable with your accuracy when making targeted shots. For the remainder of the game you should be able to focus mostly on noncombat skills while adding points to Melee/Small Guns as needed. You specialize in one-handed weapons, so stick to using spears/knives/etc and handguns (no sledgehammers or rifles).
This is a fairly straightforward generalist combat-focued build. Because you have two different combat skills, you'll be be less capable at noncombat options, especially in the early game, and you should consider prioritizing characters with good noncombat skills of their own when deciding what followers to keep around. This build doesn't have the same kind of ability for mass endgame carnage as a Fast Shot ranged build, but it's still highly effective, harder to fuck up, much easier to play in the early game, and offers more versatility.
Key perks for this build (get them as soon as they become available) are:
Better Criticals (level 9) Bonus Rate of Fire (level 15) Sniper (level 24)
VERY GOOD perks include:
Lifegiver (if you take this perk, get it at level 12 for the best results) Action Boy x2 (if you get this perk at all, get BOTH ranks) Tag!

Awesome, thank you! I'll be setting it up right now.
EDIT: It is totally awesome being able to hit most enemies with my spear on the first try. Thanks for the tips!

I seem to be stuck at the Reactor in Gecko. I have the hydroelectric part thingy, but I need to install it myself and I need to get a red keycard. I was told to speak to Harold, the mayor, but he's got nothing for me. How do I get a red keycard or otherwise open the reactor door?

Search the various shelves, desks, and lockers around the reactor.

Search the various shelves, desks, and lockers around the reactor. Ah, got it. I didn't know you could search more aside from lockers. I do have another question, though: Where do I find the lost farmer Karl? I'm attempting to diffuse the ghost farm situation, but I've searched as much of the terrain northwest of it as I can and I couldn't find him at all.

Karl is: Currently in a terrified drunken stupor at Mom's Diner in The Den. Try asking him what his story is to confirm his identity. Be quick, because Modoc will attack the Slags in one month after learning of their existence if you can't convince them the Slags aren't an enemy!

I'm very thankful for your help so far, Feynman. I apologize if I end up using you too much to solve the game's more obtuse moments. Though for now, I'm fine gambling and resetting to boost my wages.

Well, I'm certainly fairly far in now, but I have no idea what to do next after I researched the central computer in Vault City. I thought I should go to Vault 15 first, but absolutely nobody's being helpful there and I'm not sure if I'm here too soon. I could go to New Reno, Broken Hills, the New California Republic, or San Francisco too, but I have no idea what to check next. Can anyone give me a bit of guidance from this point?

Ok, this is where paranoia usually keeps me from playing games like these. I got attacked by a golden gecko and noticed an "irradiated" status effect on the character screen. I reloaded an earlier save, but this begs the question - how paranoid do I have to be about radiation? I read the booklet and it said you can permanently lose stats and/or die from it, but you need a geiger counter to see how much radiation you've got. Any tips on managing radiation or preventing exposure?

I could go to New Reno, Broken Hills, the New California Republic, or San Francisco too, but I have no idea what to check next. Can anyone give me a bit of guidance from this point? In terms of quest/monster difficulty, Broken Hills is your next stop after Vault City. From there, hit up New Reno and Redding (you'll likely be around level 10-12 by the time you visit Redding if you've been diligent about exploring and completing quests). Redding even has a free suit of Metal Armor MkII in the Wanamingo mine (use the shift key to easily locate it)! If you feel confident enough to tackle the dangerous Wanamingos a bit early (targeted shots to the eyes work well if you have the skill to be accurate with them) it may be worth stopping by Redding first. Once you've done all the northern cities, you'll have a much easier time dealing with the regions in the south (NCR, San Fransisco, etc). EDIT: And specifically regarding dealing with Vault 15... as I recall, you'll have an easier time if you get to know folks at NCR first. Don't worry too much about radiation poisoning from random monsters... it's very rare for Golden Geckos/Mutant Rats/etc to actually inflict Radiation poisoning, and when they do, it's generally not enough to cause any long-term damage if you don't wait too long to treat it. Many doctors can cure radiation poisoning, and you can also barter with many doctors/chem dealers to get some RadAway, which reduces your radiation level by a large amount. For wandering around irradiated areas, a general rule of thumb is to not hang out in places filled with shitloads of radiation unless necessary... if you have to go, take some Rad-X to boost your radiation resistence, and again, always keep some RadAway on hand to drop your radiation level if it ever does reach dangerous levels.

Its good to have Geiger Counter handy. It can tell you how much radiation you've took and when its above 150 or so then you'll start getting negative effects and should look into getting RadAway or medical attention. There's one in Vault City and New Reno and probably on random merchants. I would recommend going to New Reno first. There's lot of opportunities there to earn money and XP and it has good weapon store from where you can stock up for future challenges (There's gonna be some cleaning involved with Vault 15, unless you're planning on sneaking past everything). New Reno has 4 different mobsters. Wrights and Bishops offer 2 jobs while Salvatores and Mordinos have 3. Once you've completed all jobs for one family, you'll be made a Made Man, which means other families are now hostile to you. You can however work for all of them initially and at least do the first quest for each. None of the jobs aren't that challenging, even assassination jobs can be done without turning everyone hostile. You'll also unlock new locations when doing the missions. On Mordinos first job you can visit "the stables" where you can meet Myron and recruit him, Wrights first mission is one way to find out about Golgotha, a massive graveyard which is great for grave robbers, and Wrights second mission tells you the location of Sierra Military Base, which is another awesome place to loot, provided that you can get past the turrets (Bring a rocket launcher, snipe them from distance or use pulse grenades). High science and lockpick helps there too. A word of warning about Redding: Those Wawamingoes are really though. In fact, they're one of the toughest enemies in the whole game. I wouldn't advise trying to take them on until late game, when you have bigger guns and bigger armor.

Aye, I already died several times failing to kill a single Wanamingo. Two more questions, both regarding the Highwayman (I'm glad I went through the rigmarole to get the car):
A: How do you prevent it from being stolen in New Reno? B: Where do you get more fuel cells?

A. You could park your card outside of New Reno and then proceed on foot. Cant remember if its safe to leave your car though (I recommend saving your game first), but considering you can just leave it anywhere if you run out of fuel I guess you can in this situation too. Alternatively you can track down where your car was taken and deal with the mechanics who stole it. If you'll let them live you can even ask them to tune your car.
B. Shop around New Reno, Broken Hills, NCR and San Francisco. Weapon merchants should have them since its also used as ammo for energy weapons. You might also want to check out some pre-war military bases, since there's plenty of those left lying around.
