While the team's from all over both the US and Japan, the head honcho Seltaire hails from northern California. They did a bunch of their research by visiting UC-Davis and raiding JSTOR from the library there.

An internet acquaintance of mine is making an adventure/puzzle game about a family dog. The game will be made whether the kickstarter is successful or not, but the added funds will help improve the game's quality and add new features and levels. A significant portion of the money is also going towards an animal charity, the ratio growing the more stretch goals are reached.

This is like, way beyond funded, but for those of you weebs out there like me, make sure and get in on the Clannad Kickstarter, which is done in a day and a half. Because you can actually get some worthwhile shit for your money, kind of like with La Mulana 2. Uguu.

And Clannad is done. Looking forward to that sweet physical edition. Over half a million dollars raised. With this PC release and Steins;Gate coming to consoles next year hopefully more and more VNs will be brought over here.
Nice to see a Kickstarter that has reasonable goals in mind. Sekaiproject were open about what they could accomplish and they have some simple yet cool rewards planned. Some of these Kickstarters get so big that they could never possibly deliver what people are expecting.

I backed Clannad yesterday too (first thing I've backed on Kickstarter in years). Say what you will about the ultra moe art in Key's games (I'm not a big fan of the art style myself), but the stories are easily some of the best in galge of the last 15 years. Excellent music too, so I'm glad physical copies of Clannad come with the arrange album as well (the full OST would be nice but ehh I'm good at $50). I'm really hoping Sekai Project will continue to license more Key titles. I'd jump on an Air Kickstarter in a heartbeat.

Yep, Jun Maeda was the main scenario writer on both, and most (all?) of the other people involved with scenario writing worked on both. Maeda's also one of the co-founders and composers. I get the impression that Key's staff is relatively small (well, that's probably the case with most developers that focus on visual novels), so I'm guessing all of their games have a lot of staff in common.

I am not a big fan of Key, as I think all of their works are pretentious garbage that mistake tragedy for depth. Also, an excess of magical bullshit causing everything or solving everything, always one or the other.
I think my favorite series that took a page from their book was Sunday Without God, which actually set up mythology early on that allowed tragedy to develop naturally, along with a lot of unexpected twists that don't feel like deus ex machinas.

Uh, okay. You're entitled to your opinion. Clearly a lot of people feel differently because Key's games have been highly successful, and whether you want to play them or not, I don't think anyone can say it's a bad thing that the games are being made available in English officially so those who aren't fluent in Japanese can give them a try (especially when there are a lot of established Western fans already, thanks to the localizations of the various anime series/movies based on the games, as well as fan patches for the games).
Personally, I feel like the supernatural elements are incorporated nicely, and I feel the tragedy is developed well. Outside of revised plans, anybody who writes a tragedy sets out with the intent to do so, but that doesn't mean that it's just tragedy for the sake of tragedy with no meaning or depth behind it. The way Key's stories end would mean nothing and leave no impact if not for everything that leads up to the conclusion.
