www.hardcoregaming101.net/doa/doa.htmWell, we still don't have Dead or Alive 5 covered, but I'm putting this in the new layout with included forum links, and it seems we didn't have a proper forum thread for this so far. So here it is!

as a casual fighter fan I've always liked Dead or Alive for two reasons, it's fun to play and it offers loads of eye candy (both of the technical graphic quality and for the *ahem* female characters variety) and sometimes that's all you need from a fighter
however something is kind off putting to me about Dead or Alive 5, it seems kind of "off brand" to me if you know what I mean, for one thing the graphics aren't that great, which is a real shame considering every other past entry in the series was at the cutting edge of graphics, I can almost hear Itagaki's career spinning in it's grave (and speaking of which, just WHY did that dude leave Tecmo anyway?)

I think he said something about Tecmo not paying him owed bonuses. Shortly after he left, there was something about sexual harrassment charges coming up, so take your pick.

Well, it wouldn't have been career suicide if THQ hadn't gone belly up, putting Devil's Third in seemingly indefinite limbo. Don't forget that he took his core leading staff with him (Hiroaki Matsui and Katsunori Ehara, possibly more). In the meantime, Team Ninja is heavily flailing ever since he left.

Yeah, all I recall was two things for THQ that he was involved in: Devil's Third, of course, and appearing in a press conference for Saints Row: The Third where they made the Boss as himself. And wreak havoc.
It was odd.

I hated the original DoA 5, but actually don't mind Ultimate. I mean, I find Marie Rose to be kind of creepy and wrong (considering the only reason she exists is to poke Sweden in the eye for claiming the older games sexualized underage characters, specifically Ayane), but other than that...
EDIT : A lot of uses of "should" in the article that instead should be "would".

Raging teen hormones aside, DoA2: Hardcore's tag mode was a blast on both the Dreamcast and PS2. I sort of forgot about the series when it became Microsoft-exclusive, other than relatives asking if all games were like the adverts for Xtreme Beach Volleyball. (Sigh...) Minor corrections: Tecmo's new fighter looked to be little more than a Virtua Fighter clone - which made sense, given that it ran out the same hardware. Icy haired assassin whose bare ass in prominent in not only the Dead or Alive 3 ending, (Side note: Excessive "ass"-to-word ratio to start that sentence!) was briefly mentioned in his backstory for the very first , Dead or Alive, but dropped afterwards. This was used to implement the rock-paper-scissors system that should become a concept for the entire series, (" would become"?) as with its predecessor, Dead or Alive is one of the most smoothest, most gorgeous game s on the PSOne, All of the backgrounds have been changed, and two new characters have been added - Bass, the gigantic wrestler, and Ayane, the secret purple haired ninja girl...Two new characters have been added as well - Bass, the gigantic wrestler, and Ayane, the secret purple haired ninja girl. (repeated in next paragraph) Also included are several new pieces of music, including the most porn-esque piece of music you'll hear come out of a PlayStation, complete with orgasmic moaning...Also included are several new music tracks, including the most porn-esque piece of music you'll hear come out of a PlayStation, complete with orgasmic moaning. (repeated in next paragraph) Alas, there's still no real endings for the characters, but on the flipside, there's a LOT of costumes to unlock...Alas, there's still no real endings for the characters, but on the flipside, there's a LOT of costumes to unlock. (repeated in next paragraph) Most of the male characters don't have very many, but the females have up to 13 each...Most of the male characters don't have very many, but the females have up to 14 each. (repeated, yet different in next paragraph) This version was also brought to the arcades as Dead or Alive++...This version was also brought to the arcades as Dead or Alive++, again sporting a few major changes. (repeated in subsequent paragraph) The gameplay now began a shift towards what is to expected with Dead or Alive 2, ("is to be"? "is expected"?) there is a tag mode available, though it still is little more than playing the next round another character, similar to King of Fighters ("next round as"?) it reinstates the text endings that had been in the Model 2 version but were take nout on consoles. The tag mode introduced in DOA++ got a major overhaul, now allowing instant swaps and powerful team attacks, and should become very popular amongst fans of the series. (" would become"?) The next Vversion was the European release for Dreamcast, it was finally released in Japan on the Dreamcast, with all the costumes added to the PS2 version, ("added from?") This version should form the basis for the European PlayStation 2 release, which was just labeled Dead or Alive 2, (" would form"?) The last boss has a particularly cool attack where he changes the seasons off the level, There's a new three minute CG rendered movie telling the story of Kasumi, Ayane and Hayate when they were kids (set to another Aerosmith song (Side note: Aerosmith wasn't mentioned before this sentence) Opponents can now bounce each other against walls on top of all the standard juggling, nearly doubling the possible lenght of a combo. If you're a fan of Halo, you'll welcome her, others my find her slightly misplaced. While none of the former games was particularly hard even at the highest settings (" were particularly"?) Dimension s sets out to fill all the gaping holes in the series' formerly extremely thin narration, That said, after taking the focus off of her, the third and fourth chapter s are actually okay. There's also a rather high number of stages. A couple of them are new, but most taken over from Dead or Alive 3, 4 and Ultimate. (" are taken from"?) Technically, the last 20-or-so fights in the 100 enemies challenge are somewhat worthwile, but by the time any formerly sane person has long lost that quality out of boredom. ("by that time"?) Or more precisely, one boring pose in the beginning, as the rest has to be unlocked, (" have to be"?) maybe an AI based on farming combat data or just a mathc against their favorite character. Costume-wise, there isn't too much you can unlock by playing the game, because, tune in the next forced inclusion of silly 3DS features, the rest of them has to be downloaded. (" have to be"?) and leave your 3DS lying around whith activated wireless internet connection, Keen observers while notice simplified hair physics, (" will notice"?) And if you don't want to do that, you can litereally just spy on them as play like little girls on swingsets, ("as they play"?) (told in the most ridiculous intro in video gaming history)...DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball also contains the most ridiculous intros known in existence. (repeated in subsequent paragraph) But when the game finally was released, most of these hopes should be squashed (" would be"?) They even grub out an even fancier version extreme, "improved" juggle physics ("fancier version of extreme"?) You can buy various jetskis with different stats, and the more often you play the race during a vacation, you get to play more different courses. (jumbled ending to that sentence) If the game really excels the game at anything, than it's wasting your time. It even got black&white and sepia filters. ("even has"?) and the much-to o-close but cheaply done replication of some of the in -game costumes so we get a lot of ambiguous camera angles and lots of scantily clad females fighing.

The Honoka character introduced in Last Round seems also party inspired by the character of the same name from Love Live (especially the side ponytail). When she was revealed, several people even thought she was an official guest character.

I was reading this article over at Cracked and apparently the story is a little more interesting, if the people involved are to be believed. Have you heard this one before?

My money is on Itagaki just bullshitting the interviewer. I wonder if he's gonna say the same about Devil's Third a few years from now...

It's such a bummer about Devil's Third, I can imagine an alternate universe version of the game where the development went smoothly and we got an awesome east meets west combination of over the top Japanese game and Gears of War esque third person shooter, but it was not meant to be.
The question is, is that the end of the road for Itagaki or will he somehow make another game someday? (maybe going the Kickstarter route?)

The Cracked article is sourcing a Wired article by Chris Kohler (without the masturbatory implications thankfully XD ) so I'm inclined to believe it.
