PLEASE NOTE: WE'VE DELAYED THE STREAM UNTIL JULY 19th, 6 PM CST/7 PM EST!
Hey guys, it's muteKi. (Yeah I know that the little info box in the corner says [Bobinator or whoever posts this], but that's only because I didn't have posting permission here.)
On Nov. 21st, 1994, the earth shook as a new video gameconsole was released. Or add-on if you want to be a pedantic bastard. But anyway. Nearly 20 years ago the glorious 32X was sent into this world. This magic mushroom plugged into your Genesis and gave it a whole new world of color and sound. Well, if you could get all the hookups right and your new model wasn't so finicky that it failed to work. But, like, colors! And some 3D! Despite the fact that all the 3D effects had to be done in software because the video processor's only function was to write data to RAM! Aren't you glad you spend your $160 on this on launch day?
So it's little wonder to see why the thing didn't last very long and only made it to about 1996, as everyone jumped ship to the Saturn...and then jumped ship from there when they realized that none of them knew how to make games for the bloody thing. But at least there's better stuff on here than the Jaguar, right? That's what really matters!
But dang if I still don't have affection for the thing, and it's got a software library of surprisingly high overall quality, many of which were the definitive ports of the games to a home console for quite some time and still hold up well today.
...What's that, you wanted original titles? Erm. Well, it has arguably the best hummingbird based shooting game on consoles, so there's that.
Given the maybe 2 years it spent on the market, we have 32 32X games to show off (yes, that really is almost all of the 32X library especially if you don't include the CD FMV games), and I might see about fitting the other games in if we have the time (most of them are FMV games so you're not missing much).
Just like with the Sega CD stream, I'd like to have a rotating set of guest hosts join our GC9X regulars, so feel free to sign up to join us for specific games. I'll start organizing the order I'll actually stream the games once we get some people claiming spots. Feel free to put your name in for multiple games if you're interested.
I didn't plan the stream for this weekend because as appropriate a fate for the 32X it would be to have its retrospective stream be overshadowed by another major gaming event (SGDQ in this case), I actually want people to see if this they can. Currently I'm planning to have this be occurring on the 12th of July -- that's this Saturday. The event will probably start around 5:00 PM Mountain time, which would be 7:00 PM Eastern. If we run out of time I'll probably stream the rest of them Sunday at the same time. We'll have to see. If you want to host but can only make one or the other of the two days, let me know! I'll try to fit you in.
Here's the listing of games I'm hoping to get shown off during the stream:
After Burner
BC Racers
Blackthorne
Brutal: Above the Claw
Cosmic Carnage
Darxide
Doom - Snarboo
FIFA Soccer 96 - LanceBoyle
Golf Magazine: 36 Great Holes Starring Fred Couples
Knuckles' Chaotix - Bobinator
Kolibri
Metal Head - Snarboo
Mortal Kombat II - Bobinator
Motocross Championship
NBA Jam Tournament Edition
NFL Quarterback Club
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure
Primal Rage - Bobinator
Shadow Squadron
Space Harrier - Snarboo
Spider-Man: Web of Fire
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Starship Bridge Simulator
Star Wars Arcade
T-MEK
Tempo
Toughman Contest
Virtua Fighter
Virtua Racing Deluxe - LanceBoyle
World Series Baseball Starring Deion Sanders
WWF Raw 1995
WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game - LanceBoyle
Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000
Here are the other 32X official releases that I might feature if there's time, with precedence going to the head of the list:
Fahrenheit (If I do show off an FMV game it'll probably be this one since it was originally released with 32X support)
Sangokushi IV (I'll play this if anyone can find a translation, but otherwise don't expect me to since it's all in Japanese)
Night Trap (Bobinator showed off the Sega CD version, so there's not much special about this one other than more colors)
R.B.I. Baseball '95 (It's fuckin Tengen; World Series Baseball is about the same but better)
Slam City with Scottie Pippen (the rest of these are FMV games)
Supreme Warrior
Surgical Strike
Corpse Killer
If we split this up into two days I'll probably also find some 32X tech demos just because there are a few guys who have done interesting things with the mushroom. That's aside from the classic Zyrinx video, like some of the stuff that a guy by the name of ChillyWilly has done, who seems to be like the expert on 32X homebrew making. (He's the guy responsible for that 32X wolfenstein port. Might show that off, why not.)
