No worries, and thanks for the response. I really didn't want to play training mode for an indeterminate amount of time just to see how high the ranks go. The training game is a cool idea and mildly entertaining, but it's not that fun!

Well, thing with that training tool was that Arino produced it so he has pride in his work and wants to hype it up. It's decent enough but it always felt like there could be more. Maybe make multiple types of mini game training tools to build up timing, shooting game ability, visual tricks, etc.
Oh, as a bonus, did you know if your character is female, that shooting game in the end credits has auto-fire? Small sexism jab there, I suppose.
You also get that ending slideshow when you beat the 9 main games, and there are a few messages from Arino if you wait long enough.
It's too bad the third retro game challenge title wasn't that good. If there were a 3DS emulator I might be interested but the game has other problems.
I'd be more interesting in doing TV Game Exam or Hideo Kojima's stock market simulator for kids.

Oh, I do like the training game idea, just not enough to grind out max rank for myself.
The third game wasn't developed by Indies Zero like the first two were, right? That would explain the drop in quality. The first two games absolutely nailed the concept. Everything from the games themselves to the magazines to the special promotions and sponsored variant versions of popular games. And since games from that era tend to be very easy to just pick up and play for 15-30 minutes, that means they work really well on a portable system to boot.
It's a shame that the third game ended up so... soulless, for lack of a better term.

There is a LOT of text in this thing and doing a good-sounding localization (as is the case) must have been a bitch. I like the training tool, I'm guessing he was referencing the Hudson Shooting Watch with it? (although the training tool is WAY more complex than it). I think it's a lot of fun although I have a long way to go. Out of curiosity, did you come up with "Joycoland" as the replacement for the Japanese store name? If so, I want to thank you AND punch you for reminding me of that chain (which I miss dearly - I got a lot of my earlier collection from there). The multi-colored logo is great too, even without reading the text I knew what it was meant to be from the colors! Anyway, it's really great to have you posting here for your input on the game, and hope you'll continue to drop by the forums in the future!

Yeah, if I'm on this podcast this month I can talk about the troubles with text but what was the real shocker was when we finally got the text extracted from the Adventure Games and RPG, Our jaws dropped at the sheer amount of text and all the volunteers that asked to help up to that point turned around and ran for their sanity. (Except one, he helped with the RPG while I did the Adventure games on my own; that took a good few months on its own).
Oh, about JoycoLand, that was a reference intentionally put there from Nina Matsumoto, who had subtitled several Game Center CX TV episodes in the past. She actually had some real good zingers in the main dialogue way, way back when she lent a hand to the original team that tried to tackle this game. In the RPG there is a challenge that has you level up your party to such and such a level. I remember she put in the line from Arino "Time to put your nose to the 'grind'-stone" and just thought "Ooh, she's good."
There are quite a few places that didn't quite localize so well because of a fundamental cultural difference or issues like puzzles in the Adventure with Goroawase (play on numbers) but I hope to chat about those later.

I have to admit, that artwork caught my attention.
Thanks again for the interview on this. It was fun to chat about it.
Now I actually need to finish my own company's homepage someday. (I spend so much time wrestling with clients, family and taxes my own site never seems to get much love). Since I'm currently linked from the monthly podcast page I suppose I should try to make it a bit more...finished.
