I just check a whole bunch and filter out whatever crap they've got. It tends to be more format changes that seem designed to obfuscate as much information as possible that drive me off than dumb opinion pieces.

www.usgamer.net/Owners of Eurogamer, some of the former 1up staff is there (such as Parish, Kat Bailey and Sharkey). They pretty much don't report news like the other sites (unless it's something huge) and they prefer to write articles and reviews. And as with most sites that don't report the usual dudebro/nintendosux/microshit/sonyfail news, they don't have too many visitors. But to their defense, the site is less than 2 years old. Yeah, this is actually a good site. I started reading it specifically because that's where Parish moved to after 1up and he's a consistently excellent writer in the games space. There are some other good writers too, and the site tends to focus more on meaningful content and editorials than vapid nonsense. RE: Siliconera, I feel like that site is more of a glorified twitter than anything else these days. It's nice that they cover weird Japanese stuff, but they spend most of their time regurgitating press releases, so like 80% of their articles are goddamn useless crap like "Bob is a character in [Upcoming Game]. He likes the color green." The site rarely has editorials and even impressions of recently released games are uncommon... it's a really bland site.

If you just want to keep up with the news, there is really very little reason to have a go-to site for everything. If you hang around a couple of forums relevant to your interests, eventually someone there will report on all the stuff you need to know. That's what I do anyway.

I look at siliconera and this forum. That's about it, and it more than covers my needs. I will agree Siliconera largely regurgitates press releases. But that's kind of what I want. I don't need self-important "gaming celebrities" or bullshit commentary in a news site.
I will say their comments section has really gone to shit over the last couple years. But I really only glance at comments sections for amusement/horror value anyhow.

Well, I'm not sure it counts as a "news site", but I like Quarter to Three, myself.
There are some news, but the main draw is Tom Chick's reviews. He's mostly known for being the guy on Metacritic that rates games on a 5-star scale like movies, unlike using a 0-100 scale like school grades (where almost everything at least "passes" with 60). Nevertheless, I love his reviews... partly because our opinions are the same 99% of the time, but more importantly because his reasons for liking/disliking are very convincing and well put. He often puts the finger on what makes or breaks a game and likes comparing nitty gritty mechanics and rules, where most reviewers go on about superficial things like a general description of the game and story or graphical performance.
Some of his reviews made me go: "I had no idea I could want this thing before reading this, but now I must have it!" That's what a great review is all about.

I don't want to derail the thread into a debate about it, but if you believe that big boobied video game heroines are an actual "serious issue" then you really need to take a look at the world around you does nerd culture in general have some issues with sexism? sure, but come on, it's nerds were talking about, a group of people who are traditionally male and traditionally don't have much sex, which tends to create frustration and feelings of resentment and when someone like Anita Sarkeesian comes along to chastise them is it any surprise a few guys are gonna take their hate a little too far? no and it's NOT indicative of a "larger issue" within the gaming community Ugh. This post is disgusting and you seriously need to grow up.

I use an aggregator. You can choose which sites to display which is pretty helpful for staying up to date but not being bombarded with crap site navigation or whatever. This is what I use: www.gamenewshq.com/

That's what a great sales pitch is all about. A good review is about warning you off of wasting your money on bad games.

I kinda want to know why people are upset with reading gaming news sites that post stories about Social Justice issues. Did these sites used to post things that were actually worth reading and now they're not? Because the way I see it, most gaming news sites never posted anything interesting at all, and at least this new wave of "Social Justice" as it's derisively called is more engaging to read than what I used to see, even though I think there's some serious problems with most of those kinds of articles.
I personally only read Gamasutra regularly but I keep USGamer, Joystiq, Siliconera, Polygon, and Rock Paper Shotgun in my Twitter feed.

Ugh. This post is disgusting and you seriously need to grow up. ... Are you going to contribute to the discussion, or...? I'm not gonna throw my hat into this one (I'm still young and undereducated, and this is a big topic,) but if you plan on just throwing around remarks, you're no better than the person you're trying to insult.

and for the record, don't interpret my comments as being on feminism itself, that's a whole other topic, but on the gaming media's exploitation of it for easy ways to stir up controversy and thus page hits which = money
