Whoa! Too fast! I had no clue we'd already started! Actually I played a bit into it, and its quite manageable with the clergy. Just hit the annoying enemies with the sorcery to freeze them, then spam them with the staff. Plus, despite the clergy's low health, he seems to absorb most damage really well, and his rosary is awesome when you have the virtue to use it. Stupid deer, got me in the end though. I'm like, "Awesome, killing deer gives you health!" Then I realized the ACTUAL point of the deer. Oops! That was a bit unexpected. Stupid morality!

Well, I have to say, its full of frustrating cheap hits and I've had to make a map to get around, but I actually kind of like it. The clergy is pretty awesome with his sorcery stun, aura invincibility, and his staff appears to have better hit detection than the knife. The sorcery does appear to use health sometimes, but its so minor its worth using to avoid the damage you will be taking by not using it. It makes the dashing enemies laughable, and I don't know what I'd do without it. It makes the hornets, almost tolerable. IMHO its better than the pistol with its limited ammo, but I haven't really tried playing to much with the other characters. The jumping mechanics is kind of odd, because its like a combo of Mario and Castlevania, but when you get the hang of it, its not too bad. I've managed to do some weird jumps to get between enemies and turn around and kill them.
Now on to my questions:
What is the "first boss?" The only thing I got to was those red crocodile things with the locking gates, and I beat those guys with my usual Clergy sorcery stun/staff spam combo.
Is there a manual for this thing anywhere?
Anybody know what the "aura" does? - ANSWER - aura makes you invincible for a very short time, NICE! Make sure to watch the icon, when it stops flashing then it needs re-used. You can spam it through very crazy parts like the Volcano rocks.
Also, how do you feed the kneeling deer after the red crocodile "mini boss"? I tried giving it "apples" but that didn't seem to work. I haven't gotten the "crystal" you were talking about, but maybe it fixes the deer?
Is there a save function? If there isn't I'll have to break the savestate rule, because of lack of time. I mean if you think I should save only upon entering a cave, or something, I can follow that rule, but I'll have to re-play all that I did this last time because I was playing before going to work and didn't have time to get very far.

To feed the hungry deer, stand on top of it, equip some canned food, and use it (normally using it heals you, but when standing on the deer you'll feed it). The apples are actually a weapon. There is an English translation patch available for the game. The item bags you find around the place also contain clues telling you where to go/what to do in the stages, so I would recommend playing the game in English.

Ok, I'm able to beat the first boss, but I have no idea where to go from there; you get a crystal afterward - anyone have any idea what to do with it? Oh! Hints!!! The TOKU/HOLY stat builds up when you kill some enemies; it goes down if you kill deer (they're not hostile), or pick up item bags. In order to use the rosary weapon (which is the only way an Esper or Explorer can kill ghosts and zombies) you need to have a certain amount of TOKU/HOLY. Once you get the orb, you need to go back to the cave where you saw the giant gray gate, once there you need to equip it, kneel at the pedestal in front of the gate, and use the orb and the gate will open taking you to stage 2.

There's fall damage. Watch out for that. It seems to happen if you fall from half the screens height and you lose 1 bar of HP. I've only come across one instance of it so far though. Since you are penalized for picking up items, is it possible to play through by picking up minimal items, or is this just an awfully designed system? The TOKU/HOLY stat builds up when you kill some enemies; it goes down if you kill deer (they're not hostile), or pick up item bags. In order to use the rosary weapon (which is the only way an Esper or Explorer can kill ghosts and zombies) you need to have a certain amount of TOKU/HOLY. In order to use it or make it effective? Because I can use it, but it does nothing to the ghosts or zombies?

I mean if you think I should save only upon entering a cave, or something, I can follow that rule, but I'll have to re-play all that I did this last time because I was playing before going to work and didn't have time to get very far. It's this Tiger you fight (twice - be warned) - after you get the grey colored key and the key from the wounded deer, there's a one-way trip to this dungeon past the key that you can unlock with the grey colored key. Once in there you'll eventually come to a room with three gates - pick the one on the far left and use the deer's key. The apples are a weapon, and they work pretty well on the first boss. BTW there's no save, and AFAIK no continues either. Once you get the orb, you need to go back to the cave where you saw the giant gray gate, once there you need to equip it, kneel at the pedestal in front of the gate, and use the orb and the gate will open taking you to stage 2. Awesome! I'd thought that was the place but couldn't figure out how to use the orb on it. I'll check that out! So far ESPer is alright; just make sure to take advantage of the ESP/teleport skill because it'll save you time and health from random attacks. Also, don't be afraid to use the lightning attack - if you see anything like a wolf (the red crocodile looking things), plant monster, giant scorpion, etc. it takes less health to kill them with lightning than to try to fight them with the knife (which can get you killed pretty quick, or at least waste a lot of your precious health). Secondly, if you have enough TOKU/HOLY to use the rosary, always grind for maximum TOKU/HOLY when you see some ghosts and zombies. They're pretty easy prey once you have the rosary, and you're going to need all the rations you come across (which take away TOKU/HOLY for some retarded reason). Third, although you don't die immediately from high falls you take damage if you fall for more than about 1/4 of the screen, so be careful! Fourth, in caves, watch out for areas where there's a black "hole" below the floor, those are pit traps. Overall this is going better than my initial play of it, but it still has a lot of little annoying factors that keep it from being totally fun. Yeah, I should've clarified there - you can use it all you want but it won't necessarily be effective. Once you find that cave, don't get the item bags first - get the rosary, grind to max TOKU/HOLY on the zombie (you should have enough for it to work if you didn't grab the rations), grab a ration, grind, repeat - this will give you enough of a buffer to pick up items but still take out the undead enemies you'll be running into when trying to get the grey key.

BTW there's no save, and AFAIK no continues either. Toku allows you to continue if its high enough. I'm not sure of the amount yet. First Boss strategy for the Explorer: Stand directly to the right of the lava pit and stun lock the tiger when he gets close for a few hits, if he jumps and hits you it will send you back to the entrance and not in the into lava which causes continuous damage. For the second phase, stand to the right side of the screen. If you have bullets, shoot the head when it drops for one bar of damage. If you just have the knife, when the claws start to rise rush to the middle of the room to attack the head 2-3 time and retreat back to the right and repeat. The second phase can be killed without you taking damage this way.

One of the scrolls in round 1 mentions that you can continue if you talk to old man continue in round 2, I've yet to find him though.

I thought that falling in a pit and dying were the same. My bad. But, while messing around on the game over screen, I found that if you press up+start you've got yourself a continue. Update-It doesn't work on the first level. Also, the grave stones in level 2 will degrade your Toku.

Good Luck guys! ... I'm still working on X-Com here

john: thanks for the heads up on the continue code - I'll definitely need to remember that!
zerker: I'm making it a point to finish X-Com, although I already had to restart again (end of the game with no real source of Elerium compared to the amount I was spending, so screw it). Problem is I'm not getting many UFOs this run compared to the last (although my technology's much better - I'm decked out in Power Suits with laser rifles and alien grenades as of the end of March 99).

Anyone figure out what the day system is for? I noticed it actually counting DOWN while playing, so I'm wondering if this is an odd time limit!

I made it to a volcano and found a key. Then I dived into water, but I sorta had hard time getting out... until I realized I had to press both A and B to get out of the water.
One scroll said "only the holy can use Rosary", so I think I'll wait until my holy meter is up before I use it. Also should add that I just found a scroll that said "the rosary will defeat evil"
I feel sorta late on this, but I figure I should join in since I was the one who thought this looked interesting
Edit: Died and decided to come back as a priest, turns out the Rosary pretty much destroys anything on screen except for one or two enemies without really draining holy points. Seems like a game breaker, other than the fact that some times the one enemy remaining on the screen is usually a really annoying one

Snarboo I'm not sure; I haven't gotten past the first level yet - anyone who has, does the day change with each level?
