This was the first arcade game that really wowed me as a kid. Shame that its unconventional control scheme rendered a home port impossible, and made it a bitch to configure in MAME.
Can you imagine what a sequel to this in full 3D would have been like? What a missed opportunity...

Ah, I have fond memories of watching this game in action and in attract mode back when there used to be an Aladdin's Castle arcade in a local mall back where I used to live (it's since been torn down and a Walmart takes its place). It was interesting to watch when it was being played. I think I tried to play it in MAME myself and I just couldn't work anything out with it.
Still a cool game though.

I think a Wii port would have worked well for this. You'd still need two wiimotes minimum, but both work really well for steering and shooting.

You could probably use a nunchuck+Wiimote for single player though right? It might've been possible, Namco did a whole bunch of ports of arcade games that were only released in Japan. Too bad they skipped this one.

I remember this was in my local cinema's arcade in the early to mid nineties.
I only ever saw a few people play it and when they did, they usually only paid for one player, and one person would drive and the other would use player 1's gun. I don't think anybody ever bothered paying for and playing properly....not that I saw anyway.
I liked most how you could see the protagonists in the rear view mirror. It's actually kinda funny that I can't think of any other games that used that as a method to show the player's character in a car based game, I think its quiet a good idea (At least, in the sort of game where using the rear view mirror doesn't matter)

I remember playing this on arcade way back when. Awesome (and unique) concept.

Having played some of the Policenauts fan translation, it pretty much is Lethal Weapon IN SPACE! Even the characters resemble the actors somewhat. As far as I know, space toilets do not explode, and there is no "Diplomatic Immunity!"
Hideo Kojima is definitely a fan of American cinema- especially action movies.
Snatcher- Blade Runner Metal Gear- Terminator Policenauts- Lethal Weapon

There's an arcade machine of this about half an hour from where I live! It's at a place called Fun 'N Stuff. I went there a few times when I was a kid. It was a cool game because you sat down on a bench in the machine, as opposed to standing up at Pac-Man or whatever else was there.

Man, I forced my mom to play this game with me as kid.. I think she drove the car.
BTW I wonder if Starsky and Hutch XBOX/PS2 could be considered a spiritual sequel to this game? I haven't played it but it supports light gun and steering wheel combo! I'm Intrigued.

I've played it and yeah, it does feel a bit like a spiritual successor in places; it feels like a mix of Lucky & Wild, Chase HQ and probably a bit of Driver. Unlike Lucky & Wild, however, it's only one gunner, rather than two, so it's a bit more like Special Criminal Investigation instead. It's also on PC where you can go mouse+keyboard.

From Wikipedia. True?
"Lucky & Wild is also borrowed as a fictional American tuning car company brand in the Ridge Racer games with products being muscle cars (similar to those of Danver); the formation of Lucky & Wild protagonists later appeared in Mario Kart Arcade GP DX, with one player driving and the second serving as the gunner. Also, in the first episode of the interactive video series Bear Stearns Bravo, Bear Stearns CEO Jackie Dalton refers to the regulators Franco and Henri by the names "Lucky & Wild"."
