We seem to always do a thread for best game of the year, but how about best game soundtrack? Seems like this is one of those things that always gets passed over by the mainstream, but with our diverse interests here, maybe we could all learn about an interesting OST for a game we might not have heard of otherwise (which in turn might get us to check out new games).
Unfortunately, my brain is on the fritz and I can really only think of one example for this year, Bravely Default. It seems like game soundtracks are becoming more and more atmospheric or symphonic these days, rather than "game-y". Bravely Default's OST wears its heritage proudly, and goddammit if it isn't just a hell of a lot of fun to listen to on its own outside of the game.
Excellent town theme.
Perfect battle theme. Upbeat, high energy, really gets you in the mood for a fight.
The Majula theme from Dark Souls II was also rather noteowrthy, but the full soundtrack itself was mostly a yawn in my opinion.
What other game soundtracks, or even individual songs, stand out to everyone else for 2014?

Actually, my Game of the Year 2014 just so happens to have my Soundtrack of the Year 2014 as well: Freedom Planet. Virtually every song has a strong melodic focus, great synth and absolutely killer percussion, and the game has something that I just so happen to be really fond of in soundtracks: it has multiple arrangements of each track for different parts of the same area (not to mention several leitmotifs running throughout the soundtrack in general!). My absolute favorite tracks are: But in all honesty, I could list half the OST here. It's just outstanding stuff! Runners-up are Shovel Knight (for having the best 8-bit soundtrack I've heard in a decade!), Transistor (for being super-chill and having some of the best vocal themes of the year by far), Child of Light (for being crazy-pretty in general) and Shantae and the Pirate's Curse (which is at the bottom of my top 5 list because there are a lot of tracks I don't really care for, but the tracks I do like, like this one, are absolutely outstanding). -Tom

Among the mainstream stuff Destiny and Hyrule Warriors' soundtracks are reeeeeaaaaaal good. Great even, my favorites of the year by far. I don't think I played any other 2014 releases that stood out to me aurally.

Bravely Default (and it's OST) was released in Japan two years ago, though. :v
My vote obviously goes to Sen no Kiseki II because Sound Team jdk is the freaking best and they always have the best soundtracks of the respective year they come out. /obvious bias
Etc, etc.

I don't play many games on the year of their release, but there are exceptions. Always Sometimes Monsters was my biggest this year, and the soundtrack is a great mix of atmospheric electronic and energetic, grinding beats.

Shovel Knight's soundtrack, already mentioned here, is indeed pretty awesome. I also want to put out a mention for Mark's Morgan's soundtrack for Wasteland 2 - it has both really great atmospheric pieces and really great battle tunes that are really engaging.
This atmospheric piece, "After The Blast", definitely evokes that Fallout 1/2 feel in places, and I really love the sparing use of acoustic guitar.
One of my favorite battle themes, "Synth Uprise".

Certainly. Got goosebumps hearing the classic Super Mario Kart title screen music...with that sax! Also thought that the soundtrack of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was fantastic. Thought that the soundtrack of Wasteland 2 was perfect for the game.
