I really wish more games would do that. The one thing I absolutely do not appreciate is NES sprite color limitations. I really do... And I grew up with SEGA! I mean SMS is nice but the colors is really ugly, whilst Famicom color scheme an the use of black as a shade by later titles... really gives it a nice gritty noirish tint. Now SEGA Megadrive vs SNES... I would argue I like the Megadrive palette better, for the same reasons I like the NES over SMS

Cataegis The White Wind is the odd duck in here, in which it resembles a SMS look (or at least that's what they are going for). It has a early access release, if u are adventurous like me I really like it, even if some sprites look a bit off-key anatomy-wise.. it's really fast paced... as you may notice pacing is important to me. STUFF need to happen all the time I've known Rodrigo for years, and it's nice to see Cataegis getting some attention (been following it since he first announced it a while back). On a related note, if you're interested in playing one of his earlier games, there's Manos: The Revenge of Torgo.

I played a bit of Insanity's Blade and Cataegis The White Wind now. Insanity's Blade may feel damage spongy at first, but it has a cool mechanic where you can take weapons from enemies (or pick them up when they lie on the floor) to then mow down everything in 1-2 hits. I also really like its look. Level design seems a bit uninspired, though. The test level in Cataegis... I'm almost reluctant to even call a "level". It's basically just a long even floor with some destructible boxes and a lot of enemies in the way. I hope there's much more work going into later levels.
Odallus is very good, even though currently not quite as well-designed as Oniken (mostly the balancing of the bosses is all over the place in the most recent beta).
Otherwise I'm most curious about Neon Grey and Steel Assault.

Even as a kid I was never impressed by 8-bit graphics or music. I was much more a fan of 16 bit graphics. I'd rather see modern throwback games with high resolution pixel art that take inspiration from these games but not deliberately limit themselves to say 8-bit or even 16-bit limitations where the "blocky" edges are visible. However, I do see merit in deliberately using a limited color palette for style reasons.
Now having said that some of the game screenshots in the original post do a pretty good job of replicating some of the 8-bit or 16-bit graphical style. Having read about Shovel Knight, I respect a lot about what the developer did with the graphics and sound and when they decided to not slavishly follow the limitations of the Famicom in certain cases.

Thanks to this thread, I ended up grabbing Muri on Steam. It's fantastic! It's totally charming - the level design is great and the mechanics are sound. I do with there was an option to opt for an Adlib sound and music option though! I understand the reasoning behind it's absence though. Great game!

If only there were more indie games inspirited by Treasure games. The only worthy examples I know are Noitu Love 2 and Freedom Planet. With Gunstar Heroes being one of the most popular games for Sega Genesis, you would expect from indie developers to make games like this once in a while. Even the creators of Wild Amrs series made one for Playstation 1 and, while not something special, it was pretty good and of course much better than most 2D shovelwares for Playstation 1:
As a Game Boy maniac, I'm interested for The Joylancer Legendary Motor Knight. My only complains are that sound and animation are 16-bit quality while the game is supposed to be Game Boy Color quality.

Steamworld Dig.
Resembles a 32 bit 2d game with cleaner graphics. Appears to be constructed from vector art. Definite Metroid influences.
La-Mulana
The freeware original looks like an MSX game. The remake looks like a Saturn game. Highly inspired by many MSX games.
Hydra Castle Labyrinth
Clearly inspired by Knightmare II:Maze of Galious
Rogue Legacy
Castlevania:Symphony of the Knight meets a Rogue-like.

I haven't played most of these, although I will probably look into a few after seeing some of the shots and videos in this topic, but I can vouch that Oniken and Shovel Knight are both pretty fun and capture some of the "feel" of older titles even if they feel slightly off in some ways (such as color and more text then a lot of older games could fit comfortably).

You know, I don't think it's finished yet. Then again, maybe it is. I'll have to ask him.

I just heard back from Rodrigo: Cataegis is about 95% done, and he's looking into getting it on Steam once it's complete. Expect more updates as events warrant! The test level in Cataegis... I'm almost reluctant to even call a "level". It's basically just a long even floor with some destructible boxes and a lot of enemies in the way. I hope there's much more work going into later levels. Did you get past the first miniboss? There's more of the first level after that, and I believe Rodrigo said the stage design gets more varied at that point.

Does Castle in the Darkness qualify for this thread? Played it for a bit yesterday and it was a ton of fun. It's a Metroidvania game (yeah, I know) with tons of 8-bit homages; the most obvious one being Castlevania 2.
