www.hardcoregaming101.net/dragonknight/dragonknight.htmWARNING: Due to the subject matter, this is the most NSFW article on the site ever. Only browse in a safe environment and in a situation where you're comfortable with seeing exploitative erotic content. One of the formative works of Japanese erotic gaming, this series of RPGs proved that ero software could actually be backed up by a proper game.

You should probably change that to "TRIGGER WARNING", I have the feeling it'll be appreciated by the types that would be offended by this. Historical stuff in this game is pretty good, and it's good to see some more information in English about ELF. Not sure I necessarily agree on the gameplay/game opinions, but to each his own .

Great to see an article on this series. This is exactly the kind of stuff that should be covered on the site, in my opinion, porn withstanding, haha. I also really appreciate the thorough breakdown of how all the ports vary. Nice to know that the PC-FX version of Dragon Knight 4 is one of the best versions of the game. I've been meaning to pick it up for a long time (as I have with any PC-FX game I still don't own), but it keeps just barely eluding me.

i really love the psx version of Dragon Knight 4, it's by far my favorite SRPG.
i like that the system is very very simple, no items, just the battle strategy. i know that once you get the feel of how the AI works it turns kinda easy, but i love the overall simplicity of it.

I actually just grabbed the Windows version of DK4 along with a lot of other smut. Looking forward to checking it out, even if it's supposed to be nerfed.

Oh, are porn games on the table now? Cause I have a lot of Crimson Comics games hanging around (some are actual games with porn and not just "games" with porn).
The DOS era had some really interesting games come out in the world of smut over in Japan. The Viper series was famous for its heavy use of well animated gif cutscenes, the Rance series is almost mainstream now, ect.

Masato Hiruta was truly a revolutionary game designer I consider this a mature site in the sense that it's aimed at the older generation and not concerned with being pc as it is with presenting good articles on video games. I don't even think the warning was really necessary, and I agree with succubus that the site shouldn't shy away from games just because of their content. Also, pervyness aside, I love the art and style for these games. I even have the anime on VHS buried in the house somewhere.

I received Dragon Knight II and III (PC Engine) as a Christmas gift last year from a friend over at PCFX. Been trying to get through II with a walkthrough at my side, but it just makes me wish more and more that there was a fan translation in the works. I really love the artwork and there are some catchy tunes here and there too, even though it's chip generated (which isn't a bad thing. I love the PCE's soundchip).

Apropos of nothing, but I always wonder why pornographic visual novels so often get versions released for consoles that have all the sexual elements removed. I mean, I understand that kind of thing doesn't fly nearly as often on a console, but... it seems kind of like it's removing the point, really. I mean, are these really the sorts of games that stand up that well on their own if you remove one of the main reasons for playing them? In this sorts of cases, is it made clear that the console versions are typically censored, or is it more of a case that they're just passed off as the real deal?
Sorry for ranting, but it just kind of bugs me, really.

Oh, are porn games on the table now? There have been articles about games with pornographic content on the site for quite a long time now actually: www.hardcoregaming101.net/themes.htm#eroI mean, are these really the sorts of games that stand up that well on their own if you remove one of the main reasons for playing them? Short answer: yes. There are mountains of eroge that never get ported, and it's true that among those are plenty of shallow nukige that don't have much to offer besides fapping material. But of the games that get ported over with the adult content axed, obviously the publishers feel they can stand without that content, yeah. And there are a number of games that have sold far greater quantities of the clean versions than the R18 original. There's also the matter that the visual novel industry in Japan is... kinda screwy. Don't assume that just because a game has adult content that it was created with that first and foremost in mind. A lot of developers actually feel pressured to include adult content because that's the nature of the market and they'll lose sales if they don't. The initial release is sometimes "limited", with the intent all along that all subsequent versions will have the adult content removed. They just have to include it at first to get those initial sales and for word of mouth to spread that the game also has a really great story or whatever other worthwhile content unrelated to the sex. I can't say I've ever heard of any ports that people felt deceived about in terms of what content they included. If it's a console that doesn't allow any nudity or graphic content, you know it's going to be completely clean. If it's a console that allows some degree of adult content, then they typically have ratings to describe precisely to what level (like the Saturn, PC-FX, etc.). But even then it's understood that consoles draw the line somewhere, so PC versions are just about always more explicit. Not all of this applies to Dragon Knight obviously (it's not a VN series, for one), but that's the general state of eroge.

Sorry for ranting, but it just kind of bugs me, really. A lot of these games aren't made with porn solely in mind. Some works stand up with the porn element gone (some are better for it, honestly), while others just tacked on that element for sales. Western indie games choose to be weird to get attention, the smaller Japanese gaming scene panders to otaku. One of the works that benefited from a clean version was Fate/Stay Night. It has a really intricate lore and some very complex characters, but all the porn in it is simply awful. Nasu is a creepy bastard when it comes to anything relating to sex or trying to understand the female gender. One of the game's routes, the Fate route, was made partly so Nasu could explore feminist ideals from a man's point of view. What resulted was a terrible route where Shirou kept saying dumb sexist shit to the badass, one-woman army servant he summoned, and it gets more insulting when you find out who she actually is. Clean versions really helped the game grow in popularity, leading to a ton of spin-offs and works by other creative minds, like Madoka Magica's Gen Urobuchi writing a series of prequel novels that became the excellent Fate/Zero anime, or an ongoing novel series made in part with talent from Nippon Ichi. This is just bizarre when you look back at the original game, which included a scene in the middle of a huge battle with an unstoppable monster of a servant where Rin started making out with Saber in order to transfer magical energy to her, or Sakura masturbating near Shirou in a self-loathing manner because she's just that fucked up. A few porn games really are better without the porn, as strange as it sounds.

I meant games that are just outright porn games, not with sexual content included. I want to know the rules and boundaries over writing on these, because I have a few ideas.

I wouldn't consider a Dragon Knight game any more of an "outright porn game" than something like, say, Steam Hearts, which has been on the site for many years, so I don't really get what you mean? One has shmup gameplay between the porn, the other has RPG gameplay.
But I'm not staff so I couldn't say if there's a line drawn somewhere. Personally, I'm not really opposed to seeing anything covered on the site, but some eroge are pretty despicable in what they portray, so I'd probably be a little squicked out to see them covered if it wasn't acknowledged how problematic they are. While nowhere near as bad as some of the stuff out there, even the Dragon Knight series has issues regarding matters of consent, and I appreciate that the article points that out.
