Ninja Baseball Batman Oh Shit! The World Ends With You Vidiot Game SUPERHOT Rising Zan: The Samurai Gunman As a notable mention, a crazy Russian FMV game called "Бухло" ( it should be seen to be believed - mind you, it's not just some indie crap, this one was actually sold in stores), which more or less translates as "Booze". Really want this one for my collection - mostly to have a right to tell people I have a game called "Booze". The World Ends with You is a much better title than the original title. I didn't knew it was initially released under a different title, but yes, I have to agree - original one sounds like some sort of cheesy isekai show

This is also known as Mr. Do's Castle, the second game in the Mr. Do! series. The arcade original is a very good platformer, inspired in parts by Loderunner. Conquest of The Crystal Palace

Conquest of The Crystal PalaceAhhh, Mr. Do's Castle! I was about 12, and a home version of this was made for the Colecovision... Between this, Lady Bug, and Popeye, I was in arcade heaven! Mr. Do rules!

Duke Nukem Forever, because it's so appropriate. It took forever to make.
Side note, but I'm disappointed Snake's Revenge wasn't called Big Boss' Revenge. That would have been ten times more kick-ass.

Zombies Are My Neighbors is one of the greatest titles ever. It sounds like a B-Movie that could actually exist.
Alisia Dragoon sounds cool, too.

I guess along those same lines, I've gotta give a shout-out to my coworkers who helped come up with the title "Earth Defense Force 2: Invaders From Planet Space," which also got an absolutely lovely logo from our design house to match the cheeseball aesthetic of the name: -Tom

I've always loved Romancing Saga as a title. It has a very, well, romantic quality to it and, combined with Tomomi Kobayashi's gorgeous artwork, lends the games a real mystique.
I also like Ore no Shikabane o Koete Yuke, or 'Over My Dead Body' - very appropriate given the game's central mechanic. Heaven knows why they didn't go with that for the Western release.
On a very different note, I don't think the Grand Theft Auto series would have become quite as big as it has if it wasn't for the name. You can easily imagine how they could have gone with something really goofy, like Carmageddon.

Oh, yeah, that name is great in Japanese. "Over My Dead Body" is the best unofficial English name for it out there, without a doubt, but even that doesn't quite capture the subtlety of the original Japanese, which means something kind of like "climb over my dead body and keep going" -- as in, leave me behind when I'm dead and buried, but keep my dream alive. Absolutely superb title thematically, and it sounds awesome as well. On a similar note, "Boku to Maou" is a great name in Japanese, slightly spoiled by its very similarly genericized English title of "Okage: Shadow King." The official Japanese English title is "Me and Satan King," which is... not great... but the Japanese actually translates as "The Devil and I" or "The Evil King and I," either of which would've been an excellent English name for the game. Definitely a missed opportunity there. -Tom

I actually bought "Oh Shit!" just to say I own it, despite only being a casual fan of Pac Man -- so yeah, I concur, that's a very effective name. I find it amusing that there also exists a version of it called "Oh No!" Guess somebody complained. I'd be surprised if one who complained wasn't Namco. Just looking at screenshots, it looks almost identical to the real Pac-Man port. I never played it and I heard it's probably an adult VN but "Eve Burst Error" was one of the strangest sounding game titles when I first saw it in a game magazine somewhere in the '90s (probably one of those import mail order game dealer ads).

I like a lot of game names, really. Biohazard is pretty generic sounding (at least to me it is; maybe it sounds cooler to native Japanese speakers), but the English name of the series, Resident Evil, is totally great. Some names still sound good to me, like Contra or Castlevania, even if the reasoning behind the usage of said names might be kind of ridiculous. I guess I'm not too incredibly picky about names in general - The Legend of Heroes is a cool name for a series, I think. It's a little generic, but when I hear the name, I think about fantasy and epic adventures and whatnot, so it suits the series in that regard. Trails in the Sky makes me think of a whimsical journey, with a sense that something more poignant is hidden within. Trails of Cold Steel sounds fucking badass to me. - Fallout is such a great name for the series. Most of the entries in the series aren't very uniquely named (Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout 4), but the name of the series in general suits the post-apocalyptic setting well. - X-COM, again, sounds totally fucking badass to me. I think I grin a little bit whenever I hear the name, hehe. UFO Defense is also a fucking cool name for a game. - Phantasy Star sounds pretty cool to me. It spells "fantasy" all weird, but it works for me, and the "star" in the name makes me think of sci-fi stuffs, which suits the series' mix of sci-fi and fantasy elements. - No More Heroes is a sweet name, and kind of atypical as far as game names go. It sounds very pessimistic, and it suits the mood of the game well. - I guess as far as names I don't really care about go, I don't really like the name "Powerslave" much. I think the European name, "Exhumed", sounds a lot better to me. - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers had a fucking awful name. Two unrelated brand names attached to it like parasites, which led many people to expect it to be something it really wasn't at all. That game should have just been called "The Crystal Bearers". - I have fond memories of the name "Montezuma's Revenge", because I love the Colecovision game... but later in life, I learned that that's a euphemism for diarrhea. :/ hmm...

I find it amusing that there also exists a version of it called "Oh No!" Guess somebody complained. I'd be surprised if one who complained wasn't Namco. Just looking at screenshots, it looks almost identical to the real Pac-Man port. Well, I mean, they changed the name -- not the game. So more than likely, it was the usage of the word "shit" that did it. The game itself IS pretty much identical to Pac-Man, but... frankly, better. It's practically arcade-perfect in its presentation, and the ghosts have really good AI that's notably superior to what you find in most home ports (possibly mimicking the arcade version, though it's been so long since I played that one that I couldn't entirely say). The other thing that makes it stand out are the digitized voices -- the four ghosts are introduced by voice on the title screen, and when you die, a digitized voice can be heard yelling "OH, SHIT!" (or, presumably, "OH, NO!" in the rerelease). Also, on the subject of Japanese games with really cool names, I actually really love the original name of "Bonk's Adventure" -- in Japan, it's known as "PC Genjin," with "genjin" meaning "caveman" but also being a perfect rhyme for "engine." And... I mean, dude's the mascot for the TurboGrafx-16, which is known as the PC-Engine in Japan! So it's a pretty neat (if dorky) pun. Probably kind of awkward when a Bonk game was released on the Super Famicom, though, I imagine! -Tom

Felt the need to revive this topic once more, because I was reminded of the My Little Pony fighting game that got reskinned after Hasbro issued a C&D, with Lauren Faust herself (the MLP artist) creating new original characters for it. It's relevant to this topic because it has possibly the greatest pun name I've ever heard: THEM'S FIGHTIN' HERDS ...Seriously, that is just the most glorious name I can possibly imagine for a game about ponies fighting one another. Whoever came up with it is a punster genius who deserves a sale from me on principle alone, even though I am neither a fan of My Little Pony OR fighting games. -Tom
