I got a new phone a couple of days ago and I've downloaded four games so far:
1) Sonic the Hedgehog 2 This seems like a good buy, especially for 2,73€. I was surprised that it controls rather well with the touch screen, although sometimes having your fingers on the screen obstructs stuff on it. This has the possibility of playing as Knuckles and Hidden Palace Zone as a level, but I haven't got that far.
2) Sonic CD This is also great for the same reasons, but I've yet to truly play this. Has really cool looking menus and the option to select the Japanese or the Western soundtrack. And this also plays well and, of course, looks really nice. Tails seems to be an unlockable character.
3) Dragon Quest This was also cheap, but also looks like that. I was expecting the NES-version, but I guess that was a bit uncalled for. This looks like a SNES-remake and a little tacky, but being so slow-paced, the gameplay at least can not be too hard. I barely tried this but I think I'm going to complete this as time passes.
4) Final Fantasy: Record Keeper This is actually rather fun and addicting. It has been pretty mindless most of the time, although I just started, but I guess it will go a lot tougher as I go on. On the other hand, it's also quite nice to just use the Auto-option and breeze through and drop in when necessary. And the optimisation-button really removes a lot of nitpicking. Only complaints would be the somewhat unstable interface and looking a bit like a browser-game with somewhat unimpressing designs for the original characters (Tyro, Cid especially). I haven't really encountered the in-game-purchases, and I really hope I won't be suckered in to buy those. I'm pretty weak-minded, but somewhere I need to draw the line.
Edit: Oh yeah, I was pretty sceptical about the whole mobile thing, but especially the Sonic games made me more positive about the future. Mobile games have come a long way from the early "buyable" java games on old Nokia:s. Actually, in-game-purchases have been in mobile games for a really long time too. If I recall correctly, Nokia 3330 had this flipper game called Bumper where you could buy another table from Nokia and download it via WAP.
And Doom RPG was great. And the Fantasy-themed game from the same company. Those should be released again.

I suppose Scrabble and Ruzzle do not count for the purpose of this topic, do they?
Anyway, on my Android smartphone I usually put only actually free games, no microtransaction and all that stuff. Here's a few things I've played or playing now: Fruit Ninja Pixel Dungeon - probably the best mobile roguelike ever, however I had to stop playing it because it's too goddamn hard, at least for me. MinuteQuest - an extremely minimalist JRPG (just walk and bash things by tapping) all based on stats and element damage, with simple cute pixelized graphics. The most interesting thing is that there are thousands of combinations of armor/weapon/familiar. I sunk a lot of time on this one but no longer now, since I can't seem to make any more progress and it's always the same thing anyway. Sling Knight - by the same Japanese creator of MinuteQuest and a few of the same characters, you have to throw our characters at the enemies and so on, nice little diversion. Weapons Throwing RPG - another short title with good 16bit-like graphics, the title says it all: throw weapons at the opponent (axes travel in a high arc, blades in a low arc and knives fly straight ahead) with all the typical RPG stuff such as potions, armor, familiars etc. Another nice filler, you can pay to unlock upgrades but you never need to, since the game gives you just enough currency to not worry about it. Tottoko Dungeon - this one is not a RPG but rather a wacky puzzle game styled after one. You are a girl named Umbrella (?) who wants a wedding dress and is followed around by a fairy. Every few levels you gain a new skill (invert directions, avoid stairs, breathe underwater, etc.) that helps you navigate the dungeons to reach the exit and pick up every treasure box to gain new armors and weapons. Speaking of Lemmings, it's vaguely inspired by it since Umbrella travels on her own and you have to apply real-time on her the skills obtained. In general the game looks like one of these shareware Japanese games from the early-mid 90s and is very charming and adorable (Engrish included) without being too annoyingly cute.

Nothing anymore, but I used to play a fun breakout clone on my flip-phone that had this neat casino/fashion/neon-city look to it. Had stuff to collect and buy with in-game money, and a few boss battles with robots. Wish I could remember the name and somehow emulate it. Block Breaker! Man, that game is my freakin' childhood! I think there's a version or two available for smart devices, and there's definetely one for the oft-forgotten WiiWare. I really reccommend BB and its sequel to anyone who's into old-school mobile gaming! You have no idea what you have done to my productivity

I've only has a smartphone for a short while, and I had little interest in gaming with it seeing as I have real handheld consoles. Though some of my coworkers are really into a game called Clash of Clans and talked me into joining them. It ain't fantastic, but it's a nice time killer whenever I catch a break while I'm out. Final Fantasy Record Keeper also falls into this category. Other than that, I searched "BlazBlue" and found that ASW made a music game called EatBeat Deadspike-san. It's exactly what you'd expect from any music game, and it didn't cost me a penny, so having BlazBlue on my phone is cool at least. I also tried Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed, but only for about three minutes, for as I suspected, playing a racing game on a touchscreen sucks. This is the other reason I don't really bother playing mobile games. Final Fantasy: Record Keeper This is actually rather fun and addicting. It has been pretty mindless most of the time, although I just started, but I guess it will go a lot tougher as I go on. You can keep your guys on auto mode pretty much all the time until you start making some progress in FFIVs world. It's a fun game, but it can be a bit of a grind sometimes, making it easy to burn out. As for spending real money, it's really not that tempting. You can use mythril to revive your party and buy better weapons/armor, however mythril is sorta rare, so if you don't wanna save up, you can spend real world money to buy gems which have the same effect.

ePSXe is great if you've got a powerful Android phone/tablet/Nvidia Shield (like I do.) Haven't had to deal with any plugins like people complain about on the PC - just put games on the SD card and you're playing Crash Bandicoot like it's magic. Beloko Games usually put out some good ports of PC games on Android, too (at least, before they got pulled.) D-Touch (Doom), Q-Touch (Quake) and ECWolf (Wolf3D) are all worth your time if you can track 'em down.

On Ios, there is a really good MAME version, when I got it, it was called Gridlee, of the name of an old arcade game which was its disguise if you will. The name and the game must change pretty often, but it's probable you can still find it in the app store. Just google it. My version runs gangbusters even on old devices. The actual emulator is MAME4iOS Reloaded 1.3. Don't know where they are at now.

I have noticed that the only japanese companies that don't care much about mobile phones and focus at console are some companies which specialize in jrpgs for core/hardcore audience like Falcom, Nippon Ichi Software, Idea Factory... Also Treasure still haven't started making smartphone games. But they barely make games for consoles, so who knows what will happen in the future. Even Nintendo that was negative about mobile phone games now changed their plans. I WOULD be playing Puzzle & Dragon if I actually owned a smartphone. 'course, it's on 3DS now too, so I might just go with that instead. Better go with the 3DS games. No microtransactions bullshit, no waiting until you can play again, no need to be online in order to play it...and it's two games at one cartidge with only 30 euro! I'm currently playing Super Mario Bros Edition and I love it and I still haven't played Puzzle&Dragons Z which I've heard that it's even better.

Well, even the niche console-oriented developers have increasingly tailored their content toward the so-called otaku audience. As a strategy, this means diminishing returns over time as older gamers drop out of the market. It's sort of the same predicament that the anime industry is in - they can survive in the short run, but it'll eventually be over if they can't draw in new customers.

Does anyone play Zen Pinball? That franchise plays so well on a tablet in portrait mode! The ball physics are great, and the neverending releases of new, licensed tables keeps the game fresh. The tables cost two bucks each, and you're bound to find one which features a theme you like (marvel, Star Wars, even Portal or The Walking Dead have tables!) on a phone, it may be just a tad difficult to read sometimes; but on a tablet, it feels like those machines were invented just for that franchise! Here is a game which is not hindered by touch controls....
zen Pinball is successful about everywhere, but the 16/9 horizaontal aspect ratio just doesn't suit a pinball game! If you like this franchise, for once it's obvious mobiles are the way to go. I have almost all the tables, and I don't regret any of them. That's a top of the line mobile game.

I really like Zen. I had it on my phone for a while and it actually worked well. Looked crystal clear to me. I actually just dl'd the PS4 version the other day. Not sure which table to buy first though.

Not sure which table to buy first though. If it's available on PS4, I'd say buy Thor. It's one of my fave tables, the art is great, and the progression has a nice pace. The special challenges rarely leave you frustrated. On the opposite side, Captain America is hard as nails. I have all the Star Wars tables, except those inspired by the cartoons, and they all have some great art, but none really stands up as specially fun. They are all okay, of course. Zen Pinball is such a well-oiled machine by now,the developpers never release a terrible table. They all have their unique quirks and are all fun.

Since we are celebrating Pac-Man's 35th anniversary, I'd be remiss not to talk about the Android/iOS port of Championship DX, which is a marvel, looks exactly as good as the console versions, offers as much content, and most importantly, plays almost perfectly with touch control!
In the first Championship Edition, made for phones without a tablet version available (it's an oold port), you must use a virtual pad to move pac-man around. It works really surprisingly well actuall! And if you can still find it, that old version of Championship Edition is worth getting. But the controls achieve truly perfect efficienc in the new DX port, where you simply swipe in the direction you want pac-man to go, anywhere on the screen. That way you absolutely never push the wrong button, and your fingers never obscure the screen on phones. It has all the award-winning, genius gameplay of the console versions, and it's another hidden gem of my IPad collection, because I'm sure many people were afraid by the touch controls.well, they don't need to be: the controls really are perfect. Never missed a corner, even at 50-speed. Waka waka!
