I like the idea of "Outstanding Romhacks."

I dunno, does GC9X have a rule against offensive or tasteless games? If a tasteless romhack does something exceptional, I'd say it's worth considering. Plus, a few GC9X regulars have some experience with romhacking! I'm all for discussing Donner Party, they did a bang-up job with it. Also I'm hoping that mattra can join us, he founded the hacking group that I was a member of. Edit: There was also a PG-rated romhack of Monster Party (graphic changes on bosses, level layouts changed, etc.) that came out last year around the time the proto was released, so I'm guessing it got overshadowed by that. It might be worth checking out, I never ended up trying it out.

ROMhacks are at their best when they're tasteless.

I'll vote for ROM hacks, myself. I do kind of hope we play a good one. I definitely wouldn't mind setting some time aside in the podcast for talking about a bad one, though!

I was going to vote for ROMhacks too, but I have an N64 with Perfect Dark and it would take the least time/pain to set it up compared to the other two options for me. That and murdering Simulants is fun. All of the options this month are good, really---I just tragically had to pick one.

Just so you know, Console FPS winning doesn't necessarily mean that we'll play Perfect Dark. The screenshots are just examples. I kind of hope it isn't Perfect Dark. Not because I don't want to play it, because Perfect Dark is great. It's because N64 emulation sucks, I no longer have a 360, and I'm too cheap right now to buy a cartridge.

I have Timesplitters and The Conduit and Goldeneye too! EDIT: Ooooh, if the subject winds up being console shooters, does this mean there'll be Splatoon talk?

I'm going for rom hacks. The console FPS thing has been done to death on lots of podcasts; with the inevitable conclusion that GE/PD stepped up to the plate, and Halo knocked it out of the park. An interesting angle could be the pre-mainstream console FPS games that existed; Faceball, Wolf3d ports, Duke 3d on the Game.com. The army men games, well, I'm more of a fan of the RTS games on PC than the action games that came later and somewhat revived the series. Granted the series had a long life after going console, and basically furrowed out a brand new audience through the console games, but I don't feel any of that is more than a footnote in either the PC or console space.

So given the nature of this month's "game", I think it would be best to focus on outstanding romhacks in general! Anyone here got any favorites when it comes to this sort of thing? Never honestly explored it much.

The Zelda Randomizer is pretty cool. By far my favorite of all the "randomizer" ROM hacks out there. Zelda 1's structure makes it well suited to being randomized.
There's a romhack for FF5 called "Ancient Cave," which I assume is named after the dungeon in Lufia 2 because of how the hack works: it converts FF5 into a roguelike game.

Saw a Vinesauce video recently which showed this really cool Call of Cthulhu themed romhack for Super Mario World. It has lot of cool technical tricks. Wanted to put a download link, but I actually couldn't find any that works or doesn't need somekind of account. Less outstanding recommendations

I have no preference. Just pick something already and I will play it

I have no preference. Just pick something already and I will play it I'm going to take point - we'd discussed in chat, and since most of these games aren't going to take a full month to play each of the hosts are going to suggest a game. Mine is Donner Party. Sotenga - did you say yours was Rockman Minus Infinity?

At first glance, I'm not sure if Donner Party qualifies as 'Outstanding'...
