Read it,thanks.I'll say this--P.Anderson is definitely a better director when he's not touching any video game ralated source material( Mortal Kombat being an exception i guess).I watched and liked Event Horizon,Pompeii(that lead actress ^_^) even Shopping was interesting, but Resident Evil--they all could have went 'straight to DVD's' right after the first one imo, just weren't decent enough at all. Let's see how Monster Hunter gonna benefit from the 'enhancements' of his.. Wow, someone other than me has even heard of Shopping? I'm impressed. Event Horizon and Mortal Kombat are pretty decent though, it's true.

' ..instead of offering something truly worthy to the spirit of Resident Evil, it turns out that behind that door is just more generic action schlock'. [ honestgamers] I really hope that's not true, haven't tried it myself yet. Can anyone confirm that, without spoiling much ?

I try to be a loving, tolerant human being but honestly- the best thing that could happen to Paul W Anderson would be for him to be forced to beg for forgiveness prior to being swiftly executed. How anyone could say something positive about any of the Resident Evil films.

I haven't seen any of the live-action Resident Evils, but Resident Evil: Degeneration was a decent film.

Damnation is the best RE film.

Which isn't a very big hurdle to overcome.
But yeah, forgot which one is which, but the second CGI movie is pretty entertaining, the first one less so.
Tho some of the live action ones are decently entertaining too, while others are more of a bore. A charismatic Jovovich and some fun action with not too much dumb story in the way is really all I expect from them, really. RE mostly works for its gameplay anyways, which you don't have in a movie. And what's left of RE without the gameplay? Stupid characters in dumb stories that get progressively worse the longer the canon goes, but looking cool and lots of zombie action.

Jovovich & charismatic? I've seen empty bags of crisps with more charisma than she had in the first 3 films. Heck, even RE1's performance from Chris was better- but to each there own I guess! :-)

I like Milla Jovovich. I kinda think she deserves better than the RE movies.
Milla's best role is still Leeloo from The Fifth Element.

I saw the first Resident Evil movie when I was a newcomer to the series and so I didn't really have too much of a reference point, but by the time I saw Apocalypse I had played most of the games in the series and I was like "this is crap"
Remember when the first movie was kind of sort of working with the idea that it was set in the same "world" as the games themselves? I swear I read the director saying that in a magazine interview somewhere, but they dropped that idea with the first sequel.
I wonder what it would have been like had George Romero directed the Resident Evil movie as was originally planned.

In hindsight it's weird that they didn't go the most obvious route of turning Resident Evil into a movie, that is have it be about a special forces police team infiltrates a creepy old mansion filled with zombies and other monsters, like the game, instead of a hot a chick kicking zombie dogs in the face and a dude getting sliced up with laser beams. But here we are 15 years later with a new movie just out, so what do I know?

Well, apparently, Anderson thought a direct adaptation wouldn't surprise viewers of the game, who'd all know about Wesker's betrayal and which characters would die or survive. He figured the only way to go about things was to show us what had occurred before Resident Evil starts off. But it seems like once the 2nd film went into production they'd scrapped that idea and just decided to do this weird Milla Jovovich-centered universe. Not that I mind much. I tend to like her and wouldn't mind seeing her in more non-resi evil things. Plus, we got to see mostly all the other Resident Evil characters as well.

The thing now is, the original game is so old that the series could possibly be rebooted with more faithfulness to the canon. But I'm content with the games. Video game movies have sadly never broken through the threshold of commercial AND critical success that comic book movies have. With more and more attempted blockbusters like Assassin's Creed and Warcraft bombing against big budgets, it doesn't seem like they ever will. Alternatively, blame everything on Uwe Boll.

Alternatively, blame everything on Uwe Boll. Uwe Boll actually did ruin the reputation of a "video game movie" and turned into it this disreputable thing whereas there was a small window of time in the early 00s when the Hollywood studios thought video game adaptions could be as big as comic book adaptions turned out to be. Those recent Warcraft and Assassin's Creed movies have tried to rehabilitate it's image but it's too late, to the average movie goer (which keep in mind in order for these movies to be big hits, more than just the fans of the source material have to go see them, if only comic book fans went to see comic book movies they'd never have become as big as they are) "video game movie" = terrible piece of crap like the Uwe Boll movies. That Uwe Boll House of the Dead movie is one of the worst movies in modern history, it's unbelievably bad that reaches The Room level hilarity.

I heard that RE7 has a difficulty level called Ethan Must Die. That's a nice nod to an extra difficulty level in some of the Devil May Cry games. Who knows, maybe it's a sign that they're gonna properly reboot DMC...
