The poll is closed! Don't vote now!Welp, it's October, and the winner is Clive Barker's Undying. I.E., the one before Jericho that's actually really damn good. Follow the link below and snag it up for six bucks. Or acquire it through other means which we will not detail here, no flesh off our bones. Clive Barker's Undying PRO TIPPZ:Voting will last until October 6th at 10:30 PM EST | 2:30 AM GMT! *NOTE*: When voting, please choose a game that you want to play - and will play - but have not beaten entirely or beaten recently, say, within the last 5 - 10 years. You may not vote for a game that you have played or spoiled within the last year! It's also best to vote for a game that you have not played before. All votes are final, so no going back if you change your mind. If you're going to vote, we'd like to have you along for the ride! Don't really have any interest in playing any of them but voted for the Clive Barker one because at least that would let us make repeated references to Midnight Meat Train.

I'm going with the flow and choose The new nightmare.

Clive Barker's Undying is such a good game, and it never gets the attention it deserves.
So that one.

New nightmare. Only one I own and haven't played it in about 15 years, iirc. Ah, memories......

I'll vote for New Nightmare as well. It works out well that I own 2/3 of the eligible games for the month so I can actually participate right off the bat.

Seems like the outspoken people are for New Nightmare but Undying won (voting's now over, right?).

Seems like the outspoken people are for New Nightmare but Undying won (voting's now over, right?). Sorry about that, I lapsed on updating the thread. But yes, Undying is the winner. I've heard a lot of good about it and it apparently still holds up pretty well today, so I'm looking forward to playing it.

My biggest gripe about Clive Barker's Undying is that you don't get to infect your opponents with HIV without telling them. Humongous oversight.

Important things to know for playing this game on a modern PC: - If you want to experience the game with the best possible special effects, use a glide wrapper if you have the original disc version (I believe the GOG version uses a glide wrapper by default) and play at a 4:3 resolution. - For the best widescreen experience, use Direct3D and make sure you install the widescreen patch that can be found here. This will keep the journal from getting cut off. Some general tips: - Rebind the controls. Some of the default controls are ridiculous (reload on Alt? Seriously?). I also recommend assigning unique hotkeys to the most useful buff and/or attack spells... z, x, and c make great dedicated hotkeys for spells like Haste and Shield! - In addition to reloading your weapons, the reload key will set some weapons into an alternate firing mode when fully-loaded. For example, the shotgun can switch between using both barrels at once or each barrel individually, and the scythe can either use fast standard attacks or a slower attack that drains HP over time when an enemy is dealt a fatal blow. - The game is mostly linear, but occasionally you will need to backtrack and wander the mansion a bit. If you absolutely cannot for the life of you figure out where to go, try wandering around a bit. - Max level Haste spell + max level Shield spell + Scythe weapon is super fun.

I am probably going to play with default controls for a little bit before changing them. It's always fun to see what designers thought was passable for an FPS especially 3 years after a game like Half-Life came out. Edit: Fixed an error

Here's a random tip: some of the weirder spells have utility in battle! Invoke will not only raise dead enemies to fight for you, but it will cause still living human enemies to commit suicide, as well as instantly defeat skeletons.

IIRC, there's some homoerotic subtext in Undying, particularly with the main character and another NPC.

There was an interview in Game Developer back around the time the game came out, can't recall if it was a Postmortem or something else. I remember specifically him saying, though, what his thought processes were while developing the game. "What as a gay man appeals to me about this game?" And then he went on to say that's why the art design looks the way it does.
This man is a lunatic. But he did give us Lord of Illusions, one of the most hilariously awful movies ever made.
