Anything with a clamshell design > anything that doesn't.
Personally I think, just from an aesthetic standpoint that the original DS looks really great. Another point in its favor is that it used a full size d-pad, I think the only time Nintendo's done that since the original GameBoy (btw, the D-pad and AB buttons in an original GB can be swapped with those of an NES controller, for years I had my GB set up that way, for no particular reason). And while they later put out the usual assortment of goofy colors, silver and black was just classy and timeless.
The only things I don't like about it (and it didn't bother me in 2004 when I got it) the screens seem really freakin small after you get used to playing on a 3DSXL, and of course they're not as good at the screens of the DSL or later models. They're still better than the frontlit GBASP I'd been using at the time, though.

The Nintendo DS is the best handheld I ever had (and still is). For me, it really feels great to hold though why Nintendo got rid of it I don't know but that's dumb to me (especially as the later models and the 3DS are quite a chore to hold). Not to mention that the games (both DS and GBA) look great with all the pixel look in comparison to playing the games on a 3DS where they look blurry for some reason (and yet the 3DS is supposed to be more advanced than the DS). I'm not sure if the DS lite can display them perfectly in pixelated format but I know I'll take playing DS on the DS over playing them on the 3DS anyday. Too bad my DS has a damaged right hinge despite being very playable.

I did just that and I works great though the bad part is that I have to do this with every single time I'm playing DS games on it. I really didn't know you can do that on the 3DS and I just had it for 4 years. I'm starting to like this board more and more.

But the sreens, more than being small, were dim. That's its weakness for me.

... So, I guess in the end, the most ergonomic handhels is a 3DSXL + silicone grip,
and visually,.. It's between the DSiXL and the PSP ... no?
