Does the original Metal Gear take place at night? It always seemed like the middle of the day to me, since the outside background were bright in color.
Would Shadowrun on the Super NES count? I don't know if they ever specified a time of day in that game, though the entire game looks really dark, and certainly could believably take place during nighttime.

I think the intro on the NES version shows you parachuting in at sunset, so a large portion of the game must have taken place at night. I think you escape just as dawn breaks.

Well, technically Day of the Tentacle takes place over a night.

Is 2004 too new for retro? Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines takes place during eternal night. Technically it all happens during one night before sunrise, but the time of day never changes.
Adventure games: BloodNet, Alien Incident, Quest for Glory 4 (there's day and night cycles, and the settign is dark like in Veil of Darkness), Tex Murphy games, Snatcher, Rise of the Dragon

On page 2 already and no mention of Thief:The Dark Project? One of the games that relies on darkness and shadows..and it is AWESOME!

The NES MG does open at night, while the MSX game never specifies. I always just assumed Shadowrun was at night given the setting, abandoned streets, night clubs, etc. And the use of the Blade Runner intro. It is just an assumption though.

It's not retro, but Silent Hill: Shattered Memories absolutely nails the nighttime winter feel, to the point where you might actually feel cold while playing it.
Although, some parts of the game do take place during the day (but most it is night)

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is an amazing game <3 I should replay it someday to see how my second playthrough differs from the first.

The Castlevania games? I'm guessing so, because otherwise why would Leon Belmont promise to kill Dracula AND the night?

The Makaimura series takes place entirely in pitch dark night. Ghosts'n'Goblins, Ghouls'n'Ghosts (and Super G'n'G), all at night.

Night Walk, never heard about this one but someone mentioned it in another thread so there it is. Also this Amazing Spider-Man game had always a night sky in the outdoor screens.

Night Walk, never heard about this one but someone mentioned it in another thread so there it is. NightWalk is utterly crap. A cheap ghost n goblins ripoff with sloppy, terrible gameplay. Do not play it.

As for SNES Shadowrun I always felt that you visit some (most) areas at nighttime, while others seem to be in broad daylight? Like, there's this market type area with pedestrians and stuff. I felt like that was in the afternoon or something. You never see the sky outside of the train ride cutscenes (I think?) so it's anyone's guess. But that's the thing with old games: They made you "feel" things like this, and your imagination was probably better as a kid. Though my memories and feelings are not necessarily the same as other people's.
