That Might & Magic cover has a very similar art style to some of the Sorcerian box arts. I wonder if they used the same artist. Also, I like the MSX box art for Emerald Dragon quite a bit better than the PC-Engine box art: Though the game itself seems to be a whole hell of a lot better on PC-Engine. Interestingly, the MSX version of Master of Monsters also has totally different box art than the PC-98 version, which is kind of unusual: In this case, I think PC-98 wins, but I still quite like the MSX version. I bought the game off of eBay because of it, in fact (and because it was a hex grid tactical game, which is one of the few kinds of tactical games I really enjoy!), though I sort of regret my purchase, as the MSX version of the game is... ludicrously bare-bones. It's not a good port in any way, unfortunately. Also, as long as I'm linking MSX RPG box arts, there are a few more that I think are very much worth mentioning. I don't *think* any of these have been posted yet, but if I'm duplicating anything, please accept my apologies! (The logo's missing on this one, but this IS the box art from Xak II: Rising of the Redmoon) -Tom

Agreed! Unusuals part 7 (X68K, PC Engine, PC-98): What game is this? Looks a little like Chinese Checkers to me

I think the PCE box art's artist had a better grasp of proportions, shading and coloring (although her expression is a little odd) and it's not the more typical male hero protects/saves female motif. But I like both box arts. Yeah, MoM had a different cover for MD as well, and yet another one for PCE CD. The Xak ones are pretty excellent too, I have them near the top in my google albums that I'm linking from. Just wanted to focus on the more unusual styles/motifs to narrow things down. plus.google.com/u/0/110507989581185950715

For me, it's more the art style itself that makes me prefer Emerald Dragon's MSX box art to its PC-Engine one -- the PC-Engine box art loses that anime aesthetic that just screams "late 1980s or early 1990s JRPG" to me, in favor of... watercolors? Something that looks a bit more like it was drawn on a canvas, at any rate. Which is nice, don't get me wrong! But when I'm about to play a JRPG, I'll take that more anime-inspired look over something more "painterly" any day of the week. -Tom

I know it's a bit late for me to come to this conclusion, but I think I know why the cover to Ishar seems familiar to me.

Wow, never heard of this game, but that's one sweet cover. Is the game any good? One of the most bad-ass video game covers ever. Wish this was available at a higher resolution and without the border.

Wow, never heard of this game, but that's one sweet cover. Is the game any good? Hitsuji no Kimochi - I've only tried this one briefly in emulation years ago and don't remember if I liked it or not, but it's certainly a unique concept.

I describe good box art as the one that promotes the game's content well. Not 100% true or without exaggeration Here's my favorite: Avenging Spirit (arcade) Yes. It contains this goofy-looking ghost (act as the player), mafia, dragon, and baseball oldman Those guy can be possessed by said ghost. Almost cheerful and rainbow-y game if not for the "player get shot and die. Thus become a ghost" part or "player's girlfriend get killed in bad ending" part Jungle Strike (Genesis): The pilot can switch drive from chopper to F-117A is true. But the chopper become sentient without being piloted isn't true Another true part: It's sequel to desert strike! The last but not the least: Team Buddies (PS1) The box arts perfectly promote what's the inside of the game: there's race of gritty looking oval-tubular race with guns but the dual-wielding part is absent, sadly

Hmm... looking back a few pages, and it doesn't seem like anyone's mentioned Ore no Shikabane wo Koete Yuke a.k.a. Over My Dead Body a.k.a. the original "Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines" (the Vita game that got translated with that title is actually the sequel) -- though if someone has mentioned it in this topic already (and there's a good chance *I* have, honestly!), please do forgive me for repeating it. But I just always appreciated this cover for how distinctive it is. When this game is on the shelf in a Book-Off or something, you simply can NOT miss it -- it catches your eye every single time. It was the mention of Lindacube/Linda^3 on the previous page that reminded me of this, since Lindacube is by the same developer. As is Abarenbou Princess, which is an underrated PS2 RPG that I really enjoyed -- but which doesn't have particularly notable cover art, sadly! Anyway, just figured Oreshika was worth a mention. Let it haunt your dreams! -Tom

For some reason I've always liked covers with clay figures or models. Do they make these anymore?

For some reason I've always liked covers with clay figures or models. Do they make these anymore? Pikmin series does, especially nearly all of its promotional art. Here's Birthdays the Beginnings which looks modeled. Has a nice diorama look.

As VGJUNK puts it: "Here’s the trophy being modelled by six-time world champion Steve Davis. Ha ha, look, he’s got the trophy on his head! Zany or what?! Steve Davis, a man whose image was so boring and reserved even by the popular conception of snooker players that it earned him the ironic nickname “Interesting.” To his credit, Steve Davis has a good sense of humour about this and by people who watch snooker (myself included) he’s very well-liked." "It’s a good job Steve Davis is well-liked, because here he is again, his helmet of ginger hair so firmly affixed that it could deflect a strike from a broadsword. I know he’s squinting to help line up his shot, but this is a much more enjoyable image if you pretend Steve’s practising his Roger Moore impression. You must get a lot of snooker players going to costume parties as James Bond. They already own most of the outfit, after all."
