OFF's the killer7 of RPG maker and it's wonderful. I'm really hoping Mortis Ghost makes another full game again.

Pom Gets Wi-Fi is a short, free and great adventure game made in RPG Maker that follows the quest of a crazy internet maniac Pomeranian and her serious Shiba Inu housemate to find wifi at the Dog Paradise. rpgmaker.net/games/5441/It's quite unique, funny and touching. Prepare for many internet and yaoi jokes (Pom is a huge yaoi maniac).

Thanks to everyone for the submissions, I just want to find some time to try and play as much weird stuff as possible! OFF's the killer7 of RPG maker and it's wonderful. I'm really hoping Mortis Ghost makes another full game again. Speaking of OFF, a friend of mine gifted me on Steam a RPG Maker game called Suits: The Business RPG, which is pretty clearly influenced by that game. It's a heavy-handed satire of the corporate world and contains a few drug references, but it's still funny and curious. The art style is nice too: is (almost) totally in black and white with the player character and NPCs as very simple pixel portraits and everything else drawn in pencil in a simple childish style. Also, for being influenced by OFF, it also contains a pretty vicious parody of the game and its author, so I don't really know what to think...

On Steam I've learned that a RPG Maker game I've never heard of before, the LiEat trilogy, is coming there. I checked and it's been fan-translated for a few years already; apparently it veers more on the narrative side, and its visuals seem to be completely original pixel art. If anything, at least visually it's going to be very different from most RPGM games on Steam - some can be really terrible; a few days ago I tried Steel and Steam and I couldn't resist more than 30 minutes because of the laughable script. I'm now remembering a free game not mentioned so far: Last Scenario! I loved it because it starts really generic, even in the visuals (custom portraits and figurines are nice though), and it requires lots of grinding at times, but little by little it defies all the cliches it starts with, and the plot and characters get increasingly better. Combat is interesting too, as each characters start with only two spell slots (gradually upgradable to three and then four), so spell cards must be managed accurately. There's even a boardgame with collectible tiles, and you need a certain number of them by the end to get a New Game + option and be strong enough for some extremely tough special dungeons. I haven't played too much RPG Maker games in the last years, but this is certainly the best among them. There's also another game by the same developer, Exit Fate, which seems to be a SRPG in the vein of Suikoden, often referencing it even too much, but I've yet to play it.

I recommend "Toilet in Wonderland". It sounds silly, but it is a surprising funny adventure. It is kinda weird & funny to see Mario (the italian guy from Nintendo) as a killer. Your companions are also hilarious, for example: a tsundere extinguisher. The 2 hour adventure was really refreshing.
Don't miss the true ending. Obviously, due to the true ending, they are fans of Final Fantasy VI.
Yours sincerely

I just found another interesting one, Rust and Blood. The main character is struck with cancer and performs a ritual to the Garden of Eden or something, but founds himself in a Silent Hill-esque world, some tiles seem to be even based on textures from the series. It's a "true" survival game, as you have to gather stuff from oddly self-refilling fridges to stave off hunger, craft edible stuff (after finding a survival kit nearby) in your refuge, and search for useful objects to open up new areas. Seems to be very short (it was made for some Halloween contest) and it requires quite some "grinding", as you have to make a "sleep --> raid the nearest fridge --> eat only enough to survive --> craft" cycle several times to be prepared to go farther from the refuge. Still great atmosphere and one of the most creative uses of RPG Maker I've seen in some time.

Does anyone remember Legion Saga? It's a series heavily inspired by Suikoden series. It's quite old and may not look impressive compared to today's RPG Maker games but Suikoden fans may enjoy it.

I've never checked out RPG Maker games before, but this thread is inspiring me to fix that.

I just finished on Steam Trick & Treat, a short cute anime-styled adventure set at Halloween with a faux-horror atmosphere. Being a free game, it's simple but nice, I hope the authors are going to do more noteworthy stuff. They're working on the prequel, The Witches' Tea Party. Another title I have in the Steam log is OH! RPG, published by Aldorlea. Kind of a stupid name, but the idea of playing the background character during the end of the world is interesting. It also has several puzzles to break the flow. Though I don't understand why is often labeled as a "parody" since I didn't find it all that comedic, just a perspective change. Also in the backlog I have Learn Japanese to Survive - Hiragana Battle, but I've yet to play it.

GreyfoxDon't be fooled by the description that name-drops Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III, this isn't a JRPG at all, it's not even a RPG, it's a game that tells an interactive story. The story is about a girl that finds herself in a town populated only by old people and is magically forced to live in the shoes of some of them for a while. This is the only "magical" part of the story at all, the rest is an interesting change of perspective in the lives of old folks, where you can make amends with others or treat them as an asshole would, and not everything is so black or white as it seems... It reminded me a bit of "Always Sometimes Monsters" even if with much lower production values of course - but then again it costs about 1$. Just commenting to say that at the moment, Greyfox is on sale for 75% off, aka a quarter. In fact, if you have an additional 12 cents kicking around your couch cushions, you can pick it up along with three other games in a bundle for a total of 37 cents. Maybe not the most reassuring price point I've ever seen for four games, but if Greyfox comes recommended, you'll hardly be hurting to pick it up for a quarter.

In this period I was playing Hero & Daughter+ the enhanced Steam version of a game featured on the Nicovideo gaming platform (the same one that hosted Pharaoh Rebirth). It's nominally a comedic RPG, where a hero gets cursed to become level 1 without the ability of leveling up, and thus has to rely on a variety of summoned girls that include several stereotypes of Japanese popular culture, each one of them with a different ability (stat buffing, fire magic, protection, defense etc.). It's interesting and funny in the beginning, but it becomes repetitive soon because it's far too grindy and the humorous part gets stale after a while. I also think that its major problem is that it wants to be too many things at once, including slight elements of dating sim, micromanaging, monster raising, and also house decorating (which is completely useless), casino minigames, a tower with bosses every few floors etc. just to hide the fact that the "story" is basically repeating nonsense. Also, if the harem part of the girl was so important, it could've been better integrated in the gameplay but it doesn't seem to change anything besides the fact that you get to see ONE picture of the girl fawning over the hero. Basically an interesting concept that becomes too diluted.

I used to be really into RPG Maker games, particularly the horror stuff.
One of my favorite games of all time is called The Crooked Man (you can get it at the same place as the Mogeneko games--someone already linked to the site). Starts out seeming like a typical horror game but then... well, it gets very serious and was one of the few games that seriously made my heart wrench as an adult.
It had a few sequels. I played the first one, The Sandman, and... its okay, but I felt it wasn't up to the standards of Crooked Man (also its more fantasy than horror). Another one, The Boogie Man, exists, but I have yet to play that.
The same author also made some other games: Insanity (not translated because both Uri--the author--and her translator VGPerson think its lame), Paranoiac, which is an interesting story with some really crap gameplay elements, and Mermaid Swamp, which I honestly just didn't like.
None of these are really RPGs--they're adventure games with an RPG-like look and interface. Even when they have battles they're done with a custom style and not with typical RPG mechanics.
Tho for one that IS an actual RPG, there's one called Ill Will which I thought was interesting, but never finished and I can't recall why.
One really messed up game is called "Hello? Hell....o?" Which.... umm, no, its never over when you think its over. Just keep jumping back in. Even after you quit the game.
There are a few others I dabbled with: Killer Bear is a slasher parody (and has nothing to do with FNAF--this came out before that), .flow and Miserere are interesting takes on the Yume Nikki genre (tho admittedly its a genre I don't actually like, but Miserere gets points for having a semblance of an actual story), and one I was interested in just because of its title: A Very Long Rope To the Top of the Sky.
There's another one I played briefly and had fun with, but I can't remember its name. It involved you being a girl who wakes up at night to see her boyfriend (who you see waiting outside) but there's also a killer in your house or something. I backed up all the ones I downloaded to an external HD so I'll probably remember it soon....
Oh, the One Night trilogy is supposed to be good, as are the God of Crawling Eyes, Misao (tho I kinda didn't care for this one), and The Longing Ribbon. I only played those for little bits of time tho, except for Misao which I beat.

Hell...o?" is one of the recruitable girls in Hero & Daughter, along with a few cameos from other existing and canceled RPG Maker games. Her specialty is to instill terror (and debuffs) in the enemies.

Heartache recently released its demo, which includes some exclusive items that will carry over to the main game. The monster designs in this are great (adorable), I think this is one to watch.

This is such an amazing... and weird game. The message was also really tough to digest, I loved it. While I've never played it, I heard that Super Columbine Massacre RPG!, despite the morbid subject matter, is good from both a strictly gaming point and as a satire on the events and media hype surrounding them. It really is not. It's fairly boring, and incredibly grindy. It's worth playing because it's so weird, but it's not really all that good. Speaking of OFF, a friend of mine gifted me on Steam a RPG Maker game called Suits: The Business RPG, which is pretty clearly influenced by that game. It's a heavy-handed satire of the corporate world and contains a few drug references, but it's still funny and curious. Also, for being influenced by OFF, it also contains a pretty vicious parody of the game and its author, so I don't really know what to think... I believe OFF is pretty well known, and it's definitely one of the best, not only because of its RPG mechanics and amazing plot, but because of how wildly original it is (plus the twists in gameplay are awesome). Suits: The business RPG I played it a few months ago, it was a buck on Steam. I liked it a lot, though I played it and missed a lot, I should certainly try it again. The game does go a bit overboard in the stoner humor and childish jokes, (the music producer level was unbearable) but as a whole I liked it a lot. I'm gonna add Gingiva (2013) a surreal RPG with some silly social undertones but pretty fun nonetheless and with amazing art direction.
