Ah, I remember the first incarnation of Metalgear.net and metalgearsolid.org (which I did contribute to) The only site from the old days that's still kicking is thesnakesoup.org too bad the forum has become toxic that Ravi seldom posts there. Last year was the first time he was officially invited to E3. Did meet up with him as well a few other people from the fandom. It was odd to see the old generation and new generation to give the Metal Gear franchise it's expected last hurrah. I was briefly a member of thesnakesoup's forums, but it was infested with assholes so I stopped going, it's too bad because the site itself is really cool. He doesn't really post there that much. Haha Attachments:

I really do feel you there, I don't get why people have to have this patreon thing in the first place then they just get some jobs (and no the content making isn't a excuse). I mean I have a job outside of the internet and I made like a decent amount of money (and occasionally spend it but not a whole lot but I don't need to), so I don't see why couldn't they either. Maybe time constraints I guess? If so then I can genuinely understand. But still this Patreon thing is silly and whatever happened to just mere donations or am I missing something? As the other poster suggested, I believe many see it as a possible supplementary income. Most I believe have regular day jobs. For example, I'm a teacher by day, full time. I run a fansite (now a WordPress) by night and work on it in my spare time whenever the urge strikes. I feel I've done it long enough and well enough to establish enough of a somewhat decent fanbase, but apparently, not enough to get paid. I believe Patreon is popular over one time donations because it's just that... one time. Patreon encourages monthly financial support/backing, even though the person pledging can cancel at any time. However, Patreon definitely increases sustained financial contribution. I definitely fell on the Patreon hype train because I saw everyone doing it, and it seemed everyone was making at least some decent extra income they otherwise wouldn't have made had they not launch a Patreon. So I tried my hand at it and was quite disappointed/shocked/humbled when I had zero bites. In hindsight, I should have seen it coming but hey, it never hurts to try. It was a good reminder though for me to rethink why I write about games in the first place. Sure, any financial backing would be awesome, but it's just gravy. The main thing is having a creative outlet and creating memories. Because once you write something down, you can go back years and years later to reread, and remember exactly where you were when you wrote a certain piece. It's kind of a trip and something not terribly unlike a time machine. Something money can't buy.

And yeah, probably one of the worst was SocksMakePeopleSexy. Which seemed to die after the feedback on her April Fool's Day pranks of editing the Final Fantasy Retrospective. Which proves that fan's are still the fucking worst. Oh no, is that gone too? I can't say I really visited that much except for a couple of times when people here linked to it. I appreciated that it had a unique voice and seemed to reflect a modicum of effort. Shall we name some sites that we're pleasantly surprised are still around? It's neat that LordBBH is still kicking, and Kid Fenris. And it's incredible that after all this time The Mushroom Kingdom is still chugging along.

Ah, Metal Slug Database... I remember it from it's beginning back around 2001. I've seen it shut down and resurrect miraculously three times (probably more), yet when the site stopped being updated I felt it was finally doomed, not because of the state of the franchise but the webmaster itself. Me, it's death seemed fitting as the franchise at the time the franchise was seen as a Panchinko joke (similar to how Castlevania and Silent Hill are), nowadays the series has become a tower defense joke even though SNK is returning to making games again (but who knows SNK might surprise us in the future).
Also, I seemed to remember coming across you there as well as a fellow fan of the series.
Yes, I mostly visited the sprites section since I ripped a lot of sprites back then.

Though I was more infatuated with the setting than the sprites, not to say I hated them, I just was surprised that a series that doesn't dabble in the story has some interesting mythos.

Nintendo of Europe's official Mario website was heavily Flash based. It had a remote control you use with a mouse. I even made a heavily downvoted YTMND webpage that makes fun of one of his animated frames. Starmen.Net liked the website more than the plain looking North American version: ytmnd.com/sites/396074/profileAnother I like is UPIXO in Action: Mission in Snowdriftland.

|tsr's NES archive. It's still up but hasn't updated in well over a decade. The author has managed a few personal blogs since then. His last one, Magweasel, hasn't been updated for a few years. I was briefly a member of thesnakesoup's forums, but it was infested with assholes so I stopped going, it's too bad because the site itself is really cool. He doesn't really post there that much. Haha I never understood the appeal of The Snake Soup. I always thought of Ravi as a pretentious hipster who is completely clueless about video games outside the MGS series (like his article bitching about Ultra Games, thinking they're an actual development team owned by Konami and not just a publishing brand) and the forum is better off being completely nuked from the internet at this point (since most of the threads are now just Canucklehead shitposting). Recently Ravi announced he wants to revamp The Snake Soup into a general KojiPro website due to the whole splitup between Kojima and Konami, but he never really showed any real interest in Kojima's non-Metal Gear works prior to that.

I can't think of a totally defunct site, but I miss old Destructoid, from about 2007 to 2010. Back when the community was tighter, the articles and reviews better and the overall atmosphere way more fun. A thousand times this. I liked Destructoid for how it was very much in tune on being community focused. I'd argue when Sterling, Burch, and a few other obnoxious personalities started writing for them, the community aspect of the site went out the window and focused on them getting those sweet sweet page views with dumb articles or posts.

I still visit the site pretty much only out of habit because I have yet to find a suitable replacement, it really bums me out though, there was almost something magical about the site during the glory days and it's downfall is I feel a reflection of the downturns gaming culture as a whole has made over this decade. I just thought of a totally defunct site though, The Gameological Society, which was a gaming themed spinoff from The AV Club, while Gameological was not amazing it was an absolutely solid site with some really cool retrospective articles on various gaming things and very high quality reviews. It was quickly becoming my replacement for Dtoid but then the site abruptly ceased after only a little over a year in operation, the site itself still exists though and I recommend one check it out for some of the older articles.

I seriously think this guy had a huge impact on the NES collector's market and the 8-bit nostalgia boom. His site and others like it are what made me start collecting NES games in the late 90s-early 2000s. I imagine a whole lot of other people were inspired in the same way. I used to really enjoy a website whose owner personified himself using the hippie sprite from Mother 1 and had a running comic series using NES sprites. I really wish I could remember the name and find it, but I think his name was something really generic like NESGuy or something. I remember a long-ass time ago that the 8-Bit Theater guy posted a link to a website called colond.net (ColonD, as in ) that was basically just a guy's personal blog that was plain black text on a white background with no formatting and for some reason I found it really entertaining. He wrote a piece on Hydlide that got me interested in bad NES games. This was in 2000-2001 or so, so the NES had only been out of commission for 7-8 years at the time. For comparison, the Wii came out in 2004, I think? But it got a lot of enthusiast love at the very dawnings of widespread internet use which I think did a lot to perpetuate its place in culture.

God I used to watch some for games I wasn't even interested in. They were actually pretty good reviews.
