Technically it's not completely defunct, but yesterday I read on Steam the news that the owner of The Metroidvania Review decided to stop updating the site and closing down all the related social network pages, minus the YouTube channel that won't be updated but will still be there. Life got in the way and as such he couldn't keep up with it anymore.
I like metroidvanias and so I followed a couple curators on Steam (are they still a thing by the way? It seems nobody cares much anymore), and the reviews from Professor Q, this was his Steam nickname, were always informative, well-thought and fair. So I first started following his pages on Steam and then his site and channel, even posting a short while on its dedicated Discord channel (I don't like using Discord too much and my laptop was starting to get old). The reviews are quite good and detailed even looking at the various parts that make the games up such as exploration, puzzles, combat in order to find something that can be tailored on anyone's tastes and not just saying "it takes X hours to beat it" or "there's not much replayability". Metroidvanias aren't that much of a niche now but I have yet to find someone else who can analyze them in such meticulous detail.

Metroidvania Review is certainly one of the a few gaming sites I genuinely enjoyed visiting. The articles are very well-written and the site-layout is very easy on the eyes. Reading his reasoning for stopping working on the site is heartbreaking. But at the same time there is some comfort in knowing that people caring about their neighbours as much as he seems to do, exist. I wish him well.
