I had some trouble with zsnes as well. I'm not sure exactly what the problem was, but I did find some others were having similar problems, unresolved since like 2013.
I switched to snes9x, which works great on my system. Runs right out of the box, and includes a good array of mod-ability.

I also forgot to mention that on the same PC with the same versions (I also have another version just for Super Mario RPG which has emulation issues) it was working fine last year.

Honestly, use snes9x, it's much better and modern It's possible, that since it's the same old computer, that you've downloaded newer programs that are active and are using more resources. So when you use ZSNES, your computer doesn't have enough power to run it at full speed anymore.

There's a chance that updated device drivers in your system are causing trouble with zsnes

To me it's game specific. Final Fight 3, Marvel Super Heroes and Psycho Dream runs like ass on znes but runs great on snes9x. It's really too bad since znes has better sound emulation.

It's really too bad since znes has better sound emulation. It...doesn't ? iirc the latest version of snes9x is using the same (or similar) LLE audio as bsnes so it has pretty good sound emulation, and even if it didn't it would still be superior to zsnes' poor sound emulation (timing artifacts and held notes are wrongly performed for example). I don't get why people are still using zsnes, it's pretty much the worst snes emulator available nowadays.

Yeah ZSNES was really mostly notable for being really fast, but this came at severe expense to its accuracy, resulting in a lot of incorrect transparency, strange artifacts on more complicated games like Tactics Ogre or Tales of Phantasia, and sound coming out very wrong in games like ActRaiser and Super Castlevania IV. SNES9X is by far much more usable, and since computers are now much faster than they were when that emulator was originally developed, it's now more or less free of the performance issues it had 15 years ago.

zsnes had great compatibility for a long time, and good features. it was about the time that the online multiplayer function was unceremoniously disabled that i started noticing a steady downhill in performance. really: snes9x is what i'm going to be sticking with for the time being.

ZSNES is a really out of date emulator that I'm pretty sure has been abandoned by its development team (the last version was ten years ago.) You're better off looking at 9x or Higan.

I haven't touched ZSNESW for some time. So recently I decided to try it again and for some weird reason it slowdown incredibly. And I haven't messed up the settings. Help please? Trying out Snes9x as others have "suggested" would be ok..I have and I like it well enough....but then, Snes9x uses a bit more resources for it's greater accuracy. Besides...you didn't ask about recommending ANOTHER emulator on this thread, you asked about the problems with your Zsnes, right? Right. When I used ZSnes, it was on an older computer and yes, I used it because it was more resource friendly, despite the inaccuracies to the actual hardware. And yes it did weird things on occasion, and one time, it did stop functioning normally. As some have said already, could be updates on your pc using more resources meaning less for ZSNES (but then, using that same logic, switching over to Snes9x would seem silly given how that Emu uses a bit MORE resources than Z does). What you can try is simply copy your romsets to another folder, delete the old Zsnes from your PC and simply re-download it and start the installation again (then putting your copied romsets back in). I make the suggestion of deleting then redownloading because it is possible that somehow, somewhere, some of the files that Zsnes depends on have become corrupted in some fashion. A fresh download and install, along with a clean set of roms, should help. Be sure your romsets are just that...the roms...no config files or saved games, etc, in there as those could be part of the problem. If that doesn't help, you may look into cleaning out your system, freeing it from unnecessary software, maybe run a virus scan and/or a defrag, THEN redownloading and resetting Zsnes. Yes, the emu is outdated, but there is no reason why that emu shouldn't run just fine on even a pc from about 10 years ago.
