I'm currently ripping instruments from and studying the sound design of X68K soundtracks so I'd like to check that I don't miss anything special. I'm already a big fan of this one since it pretty much sounds like a beefed up Mega Drive/Genesis (just without the PSG/Master System part).
Good stuff I know about:
SSF2
Burning Force
Asuka 120% Burning Fest.
Knight Arms - Pretty much on par with Star Cruiser.
Aquales
Castlevania Chronicles
ChoRenSha
Ys 1 & 3
Genocide 2
Bosconian
Mad Stalker
Cyber Block Metal Orange EX
Chase HQ
Thunder Force II - While I'm nostalgic about the MD ver. I have to admit this sometimes sounds better. Was expecting sampled drums though.
Power Drift - If anyone knows how to rip the arcade version instruments I'd appreciate it! This one's slighty worse and has FM drums, but still sounds nice.
Strider - Noticeably better than the Arcade version overall. Could use better strings and trumpets though.
Sol-Feace - Better instruments than on MD for some reason (both use near identical 4op FM and are composed/designed by the same guy) and of course the extra channels help.
Bomberman
Granada
After Burner 2 - There are a couple of bonus tracks here that sound better than the rest.
Nectaris - Clean and thick sound overall, but with slightly disappointing drums and noisy guitars.
Blue Wings 2: Blue Knights - Good drums and the rest is decent.
Star Trader - Good drums and the rest is decent.
Carat
R-Type II - The fan remakes (?) by someone called Ganba are a lot nicer even though they use mostly the same instruments. The prequel was kind of disappointing.
Full Throttle
Flappy 2 - Cute Taito-style stuff.
Gradius II - Decent but with kind of a distant and quiet sound.
Parodius Da! - Similar to Gradius II and the samples aren't the best overall.
Phalanx - Bad guitars though.
Telenet Music Box
SilSteel
Doukyusei
Space Harrier - Slightly worse than the 32X one and with FM drums, but still nice.
Dragon Spirit - Sounds almost identical to the arcade ver.
Akazukin Cha Cha Cha
Ghouls 'n Ghosts? - It wasn't in the .MDX pack
I've downloaded and on YT what I've found is midi stuff and a version that sounds pretty much the same as the arcade one.
Edit:
Super Real Mahjong PIV
Last Battalion
Scorpius
Cat's Part
Nobunaga no Yabou: Bushou Fuunroku - Above average acoustic/orchestral ost with some nice brass and which seems to use ams or lfo effects.
Quarth/Block Hole - A bit better than the arcade ver. overall, with some nice leads.
Mixed bag:
Gradius - No drums, so-so bass and the leads are less varied than in other versions.
Downtown Nekketsu Story/River City Ransom - Kind of disappointing overall but with some nice leads and decent drums.
Hydlide 3 Special - Compared to MD it has so-so drums, sometimes better leads, and some tracks seem to be different.
Valis II - Uneven.
Fairyland Story Taito - Uneven.
Final Fight - Slightly better than the arcade ver. overall? But still kinda rough.
Viewpoint - A little better than on MD overall but still not on par with the NG one.
Zugya
Undeadline - Worse than on both MD and MSX overall. Muffled drums.
Heavy Nova - Mostly better drums, but worse leads and mixing than on MD.
Atomic Robo-Kid - Pretty rough still.
Edit:
I'm also interested in obscure YM2151-based arcade game music! Please check that it's not on this site though as I've just gone through their library: vgmrips.net
