Hakaioh seemed like a pretty unique, obscure game. I was able to snag a copy on ebay for only $2. I hope you guys keep covering wacky games like this as bonuses for Patreon subscribers.

I have to say, River City Ransom was pretty damn popular in my neighborhood and school. Everyone knew that it was a choice between that or Double Dragon II for NES fighting games.
Although, the 2 player fight mode on Double Dragon 1 was really popular as well. About as much as SF 2 at the time.

Kids in my hometown seemed to know about it, too, though even to this day I have yet to play it.

It was a game that I knew about back then but I thinks it's because people knew the name from Nintendo Power. I never saw it in the wild.
@jasonx it's definitely worth the $4/5 on Virtual Console or even emulating. It's a fun one.

I only played through River City Ransom for the first time a couple years ago, but I really liked it. It's not a flawless game or anything, but it's super fun and I'm happy to have played it.

As someone who grew up playing and enjoying Jones in the Fast Lane, it really irks me how much you guys disliked that game. At least it was better than Sierra's other game from the same time period, Oil's Well.

I mean, as we've said, at it's a core it's a board game that runs off of pure randomness where there's absolutely no player interaction.

Despite the fact that I both like Pokemon as a series and don't mind when the games I love don't get very high in the list, ranking for Pokemon was a little too ridiculous in my opinion. Basically, a lot of arguments about historical importance and staying power of the franchise, but barely any mention of the actual gameplay of Red & Blue, which is, frankly, kind of a mess - I mean, the balance is all over the place, there's at least one easily accessable possibility to get into unwinnable state, you can abuse the hell out of it with the right tricks (and not in intended TES-like way), and some types don't even work properly (there are no weaknesses for psychic types due to a bug, as far as I know). Giving a top-tier spot to such a severely unpolished and obsolete game was kinda weird, imo.

I think in that partiuclar case, while we all agreed the game itself had issues, that wasn't why we ranked it so high. There's been quite a few times when we've rated games that high just because they were that important and that influential. I don't need to go into how much of a big deal Pokemon was, and just how important it was for a lot of reasons. We go into the same sort of reasoning with Bejeweled. That game is also pretty dull, but it's also so incredibly important that not giving it a high ranking just wouldn't feel right.

In that case, someone should just nominate Call of Duty 4 or Gears of War and let them top the list as I can't think of any more influential games then those released in recent memory, even though CoD4 is trash and Gears is only average.
Hell, what about Flappy Bird then? Possibly one of the most boring games ever made, but 50 million plus downloads by 2014 alone must make it good, right?

Just pointing out that ranking games based on popularity or influence is an incredibly stupid metric.
