Any point in history? Any subgenre? Ok, I'll try to do it chronologically: I really love playing Indy500 on Atari 2600, with the driving controllers. Yeah, you need another person to play it. The controls feel amazing! Fluid, smooth, simple gameplay, tons of fun, can be played with anyone, very easy to pick up;) Tag is awesome!! From other, earlier arcade style racing games, OutRun off course, the feeling, the music, wow. THen it gets more difficult, there are a lot games on the more arcadey side I like. But to pin a few examples down is tricky. Kinda. Too much good stuff. But mostly for nostalgic reasons I guess. My favorite "modern" racing game would have to be outurn again,OutRun 2006, just love the visual style, the feeling, yeah even drifting feels good in it. Oh and Outrunners is so awesome......damn too much OutRun. Hey I also like the first few entries in the Need For Speed Series, Screamers, RollCage series etcpp..

Ok besides Super Mario Kart (which is my favorite game of all time) I will give a nod to Need For Speed: Most Wanted on the XBOX 360. It is such a fun game and I love the open world sandbox aspect. It also looks amazing. It's what sold me on an XBOX 360.

I already did the kart racers on page 1, so here come the...
Sci-Fi Futuristic Racers:
I would not be able to really name a single best game, for there are two franchises which I find equally perfect, and they are
- WipeOut: takes a little time to learn, but is immensely rewarding. Not as hard as they say. I spent the most time with the two PSP games.
- F-Zero: I like the original well enough, but it's the Gamecube's F-Zero GX which I find to be exceptional. And yes, exceptionally hard if you want to progress. But man, what a game. Sega (well, Amusement Vision) at their best.

Nobody here loves Extreme-G like I do? Oh, it's a good franchise; the gamecube iteration is cool. But it is not on the same level as, say, WipeOut. Good nevetheless.

Nobody here loves Extreme-G like I do? Oh, it's a good franchise; the gamecube iteration is cool. But it is not on the same level as, say, WipeOut. Good nevetheless. Extreme G is a valid series to like for sure. The post-N64 titles are particularly excellent. I don't see the point of slavishly comparing it - or any other futuristic racer for that matter - to WipeOut other than in terms of aesthetics, and the fact that BT handled the music for the underrated XGRA puts at least that title in the same eschelon. WipeOut is a great series, but its play control has more in common with Hydro Thunder than any terrestrial racer. Extreme G has an incredible sense of speed, and the bikes feel connected to the track, which is something the aforementioned WipeOut and the classic F-Zero purposely eschew. It is as if Tron's light cycles found themselves in a racing game rather than their traditional 3D Snake application. My point here is that everyone's opinion is equally valid in the end. As for my taste, I always lean toward arcade drift, and favor Sega racers. Daytona USA, Sega Rally 1995, OutRun in any flavor, especially 2 and 2006, Initial D Street and Special Stage, the Sonic and Sega All-Stars games - you get the idea. I also love the entire Ridge Racer series, though admit the series has not evolved since the first PSP game. Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 deserves mention here, as does the driving portion of GTA V. Taito's Battle Heat games, which sadly remained in Japan, are another excellent series of killer drift racers. The version of Road Rash that originated on the 3DO, and saw superior Saturn and Playstation ports, has become an often overlooked classic. For something not on the z-axis, I can play Super Off-Road for hours; particularly with three other players. Finally, I need to give a shout out to Sega's classic arcade game Turbo. Nothing emulates it properly, but the Colecovision version is extremely fun. I find the purpose of driving games, which I avidly collect, to be the adrenaline rush of high speeds with none of the inherent risk. I'm not a big sim guy, despite having a nice Logitech wheel and stand rig, because I find it too hard to know when to shift and brake without an actual car in motion telling me when to do so. This fact kills it for me, and it cannot be easily emulated. It might be different with a moving hydraulic piston cockpit setup, but that is unobtainable for me.

This is the only racing game you need to play.

I have never been particularly good at racing games and I never played many of them, but I can remember having enjoyed a few: - Pitstop 2: the 1984 C64 classic by Epyx, one of my first videogames and still very polished for such an old game. And the split screen was quite a novelty back then, allowing to waste many afternoons playing with my brother. - Outrun, Turbo Outrun and Outrun 2006 Coast To Coast: not much to say about the original Outrun other than I love it. That said I never played Turbo Outrun the arcade but I remember the C64 port being fairly competent, even though the most memorable thing about it was Jeroen Tel's amazing remix of Magical Sound Shower. Finally, Outrun 2006 which is not only very playable but also helped me getting through a very depressing summer. - The Lotus series and the Supercars series: I put them together because both are classic Amiga games and because they were developed by the same team. Lotus was a very playable Outrun-style racing series with an unique feel, while Supercars was a great alternative to coin-ops such as Badlands and Super Sprint. - Wipeout 2097: I think I already wrote on this forum the reasons I love this game. In short: it's fun and the soundtrack is kickass and influenced my taste in music. - Sonic All-Star Racing: both of them. They are a joy to play, even though Transformed could have been a bit easier.

For me, it depends on the day between Crash Team Racing or Sonic & All-Stars Transformed. I'd consider them both to be the finest kart racers ever made, and I'd say they both easily beat Mario Kart. (Well, at least from my experience. Haven't played one beyond Double Dash.) I wish more kart racers stole the airtime boost from CTR, it's such a great mechanic.

I prefer arcadey racers like Burnout 3 and Project Gotham Racing. I normally don't play racing games, so I don't even remember why I tried PGR, but it was very chill and fun when I did.
Burnout 3 was... perhaps this is overselling it a bit, but the game was pretty much a revelation of physics. I never did beat the final race. It was so difficult.

Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast. For me this is the ultimate relaxation game. Just you and your girl enjoying a ride, not even giving a frag when aliens abduct people or ghosts appear--hell she even asks you to run them over and scores you on it!
Crazy Taxi has a similar appeal to me--I just like the "no fecks were given that day" nature of the setting and characters.
A third entry would have to go to Re-Volt on either PC or Dreamcast, because again there's a "no fecks given" feel to it--some toy cars came to life and decided they was gonna race... as ya do. I seriously wish someone would try to incorporate the Re-Volt cast into a larger world. Like imagine an RPG except in one village (or randomly across the world) you keep running into these toy cars that came to life and are obsessed with racing because they can be. There's no reason they exist, they just do, and its awesome.
