Cutesy oddball games like Incredible Crisis, Mr Mosquito and Stretch Panic seem to have largely fallen by the wayside.
What's sad is the genre seemed to have hit the big time with Katamari Damacy, but the success was short lived.

While talking about this, traditional real-time strategy games don't seem to be doing in Japan either. Interestingly, Korea had a flourishing RTS industry in the 90s, which pretty much died, but Japan has produced few such titles in the first place. My assumption is that the genre was never that popular there in the first place, not even during the late 90s/early 2000s where the largest quantity - but not necessarily quality - of traditional RTS games came out, and that its focus on the PC hindered its success in Japan.

Relic Entertainment and Microsoft Studios still do it inconsistently too(it's been ages since last AoE game and Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40,000 series seems to inherit some MOBA elements). Also, has the majority of motorcycle simulators releases been left entirely in Milestone S.r.l. hands now?

Regarding Petroglyph: That may have been true at one point, but the last ex-Westwood employees lest Petroglyph years ago. Regarding traditional RTS games: They are not as dead as one might think. In the last years, we had Grey Goo, Act of Aggression, The Hive, Reconquest, Deserts of Kharak, and a new Age of Empires is coming too!
