I'm getting a little fed up with ePSXe and it's plugins and so on, I was wondering if there was a better option, preferably something devoted to PS1 but it's also gotta have a scanline filter.

Mmm I think ePSXe is still the one with the best compatibility. I know I had a really good one at home. I'll look next time I'm there, but I think it's just ePSXe with some optimized plugins.

So, I cannot figure out how to work Mednafen at all.

By default Mednafen operates via command line, so if you want a point-and-click GUI interface you'll need to download a frontend for it.
Honestly, my recommendation would be to just use Retroarch for your emulation needs. Compiles most of the worthwhile emulators short of Dolphin and PCSX2 into a single convenient interface.

So, I cannot figure out how to work Mednafen at all. Few things to consider Griff: you would need 3 bios files in "firmware" folder for PAL/NTSC-U/J machines, then open Mednafen CFG file with any word editing software(like Wordpad or MS Word), scroll down the list and about midway through you should start seeing PSX settings. Tweak those according to this guide (scanlines, bilinear interpolation, screen filters etc.). Hold down ' alt+shift and press 1' while emulator is running to map the controller buttons(press it twice each for them to register), drag and drop CD image on Mednafen .exe to launch the game. F5 save state, F7 to load, some other keyboard shortcuts here.(scroll down a bit)

Just download Bizhawk: tasvideos.org/BizHawk.htmlIt plays many systems, and PS1 plays perfectly. No need to mess with glitchy emulators with confusing plugins like ePSXe, or command-line emus like mednafen. Bizhawk is actually using mednafen for PS1, so just download that great emulator (or frontend, I guess), and forget about everything else.

How are the retroarch cores for PS1 games? For some reason I can't get N64 games to work with any RetroArch core and thought that was too complicated, but there are some PS1 games I miss.

I use Beetle PSX, and that's pretty much perfect 99% of the time. It might take a more powerful PC than, say, ePSXe, but I'd say it's worth it.

I'm glad it works well, can't wait to dive back into my old games.

If you have some money on your hands, you can find and mod a used PSP (they're cheap as dirt nowadays) - it has a native PS1 emulator made by Sony themselves that works pretty much perfectly .u.

PSX Emulation is surprisingly strong on Bizhawk. Probably because they're not using some ropey core locked in at 30fps like their godawful NES emulator.

If their fast emulator doesn't work with your game, prepare for 2FPS because they never fixed the other one.
