Throughout my life, typical music you hear on radios and even used in other media like TV ads and shows and films are usually difficult for me to gain interest in them.
Since my childhood (especially when the original Star Fox and Wave Race 64 came out) I love video game music, but sadly couldn't find CD albums much. Nintendo Power catalogs had a few, but not enough.
Video game music has several merits in my opinion:
* Not prominently used (making it not annoying) * Free to very affordable * Some in .vgm or .vgz or other original ripped files (holds in kilobytes per song while lossless). * Almost always no lyrics (lyrics is like reading and can make it useful in fewer purposes) * Different genres
But despite all of that, almost everyone near me aren't interested in them. Not even some at a local driving school.
But what video game music is enjoyable for those who dislike video game music?

While having an interest in the local rock scene might have led to this, one of my relatives has developed an interest in Silent Hill vocal music.

I often hear chiptune arpeggios in mainstream music. So there's definitely a universal appeal in it, especially now that most of the population are accustomed to music generated by lo-fi electronics. Anamanaguchi has made music expressly for games like Scott Pilgrim, so maybe that's what you're looking for?
Musical tastes, however, vary greatly outside video games. And games themselves have productions equivalent in fidelity and number of genres to what's available anywhere else -- if not just licensing "real" music like Grand Theft Auto. If you're looking for the equivalent to Ed Sheeran or Katy Perry, I don't know what to suggest.

On the note of Grand Theft Auto: did you know its cinematic soundtrack was composed by Tangerine Dream? They released an album of it. It's great stuff, reminiscent of their stuff for movies like Sorcerer and Thief.

I don't really get the question. "video game music" is too broad a term, as well as "non video game music" . I personally dislike a lot of music you hear in mainstream radio or media in general.....but I listen to a lot more than just "vgm". And all benefits you listed als pros for vgm can be used for a lot of "non vgm" as well...

Really depends on the person and their tastes. Do they like synthwave and electro? Maybe Hotline Miami. Trip hop? Silent Hill 2. Prog rock? Uematsu and Follin. And so on.

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame did the soundtrack for Quake. And the Euro scene had Bomb the Bass and Alien Sex Fiend, I particularly like the latter's Inferno: The Odyssey Continues. And yeah, Tangerine Dream is cited by a lot of my favorite composers as inspiration, e.g., the underrated Neil Baldwin.

I guess it's up to whatever tastes that person may have.
Stuff like Ridge Racer would be really good for those that like dance music...

Hikari, by Hikki, for Kingdom Hearts was the first song that came to mind.
I've gotten a lot of friends ask for this track from Bust-A-Move, during a commute.
One of my favorites is "One Night in Neo Kobe City," on Snatcher. It's cool. It's smooth. It's 1980's detective music.

I think the instrumental synth stuff would be hits with the EDM crowd. Also composers who do specialize in dance music like Hideki Naganuma and Yuzo Koshiro. Not sure about instrumental rock songs, I think general audiences would find it "soundtrack" music still. Songs with lyrics would blend in well with what's on radio these days. To give a recent example, Rivers in the Desert from Persona 5 or Uncontrollable from Xenoblade Chronicles X I'm sure would found a good size new audience.

I honestly can't believe how good this is. Not only it's of the best tracks ever recorded for an Ace Combat game, but it's a brilliant composition on its own. So simple, so beautiful.
