Seriously, what is the purpose of having multiple accounts? Alot of forums frown upon that and will ban you for it, if they find out.
It comes across as hiding from something. Especially if you're using proxies to hide IP addresses. Most people use them to troll or make racist/derogatory/sexist comments that they wouldn't otherwise make with their normal accounts. Or to change their profile sex from male to female to get likes and messages from desperate folk.
So what is the point of Alt-Accounts?

I made a few alt accounts when I frequented IGN years ago. I mostly did them to either mess around (like by posting ridiculous spam on an alt account, then going to my main account and criticizing my alt account... I was 13 and immature), or to subtly circumvent bans or whatnot. Also, when I wanted to make a post count celebration thread, I'd start posting on an alt so that I wouldn't hit 5,000 posts or whatnot on my main account before I was ready. Stuff like that.
So... ultimately, I don't really think of alt-accounts as being necessary.

I'm sure for any number of reasons. Mostly boredom, or attention I would suppose.
I've seen quite a few odd trolls on Yelp, with multiple alt-accounts. One person would get banned for saying something controversial or calling someone out, and be repeatedly banned because when that person made a new account, the people on Yelp would realize who it was and report them.
One person in particular had a main account and numerous troll accounts that he would use to harass yelp users that crossed him. He would flag that particular person and use alt-accounts to do the same. Find out a lot personal information, and start attempting to harass that person at work.
Another person kept making a fake account, using X-rated homosexual porn images as a profile pic, and spam multiple porn threads. It would take about a day to get him banned, and he would spring up again.

So you can berate your former employers anonymously, and say things like "He (meaning you) can't win a championship with those cats."

Most of the time, it's to evade bans. At another forum I admin, we've had people suddenly remember that they'd registered more than once by accident, not long after a ban is put in place. Or there was that one summer where one guy had not just alternate accounts, but a disturbingly large database of brute-forced passwords to other peoples' accounts.

Yea they're generally for tomfoolery. Except here where they're usually because someone forgot their login information and the recovery options are bunk.

anonymity is the obvious reason. people want to post without being associated with another account. as to why - could be any as innocuous as wanting to avoid attention tied to another account, as obnoxious as puppeting a thread, or going as far as evading bans or harassing a person.
I'm not sure how much personal info hosting is done on a site like this, but I would assume that some of the power users here would use alt accounts to keep information organized into different compartments (eg. login_A for music, login_B for graphics, etc.)

Susanismyalias had an alt account a while back that had everyone fooled. Still kind of weirded out by that.

Forget what the name was, but I still remember when he outed himself in a thread. Honestly, I assumed SuzyCreamCheese was another of his alts for a while, but they speak in a completely different way.

Well I mean the Jig is up. I'm Weasel's alt. I just use this one to be sneaky for admin purposes.

Plot twist: All of us are aaa 's alts. In fact, this forum is an experimental writing project of Kurt's, and none of us are real. Why is he outing himself now, through me?

A bit more serious now, what do you think they would be for? Trolling, fooling around, evading responsibilities, circumventing bans, or in general, doing things you wouldn't want associated with your main account. But they could also be a way to 'start again', especially if one's main has grown to have negative associations. In small forums like this one it would be too obvious, though, this would work better in larger ones or in other social networks (Twitter, tumblr, &c). OH, but then your alt would be your main, huh...
