So the new Firefox is out, and I'm happy that TreeStyleTabs is still working. And I'm happy that it seems to be much more responsive than previous versions. I am not so happy that it seems to have continually high CPU usage, mostly because my computer's fans are just awfully noisy. (Perhaps I should just solve my problems by getting a new CPU cooler.)
It would have been nice if they'd tried to change the name to go along with this major shift in the underlying code, as it's impossible to look for solutions for what is effectively a new browser without tripping over decades of advice that no longer applies at all.
One of my old standbys used to be the BarTab Heavy addon, which could "unload" browser tabs from memory, and then reload them when activated. This was very useful as I could sometimes guess which open tab was unusually busy, unload it, and thus keep Firefox's CPU usage down. I think the new Firefox has some of this functionality built-in, but I have been unable to verify that. Either way, there's no obvious "unload tab" menu option anywhere.
Perhaps someone here is better informed, and can suggest a new way to duplicate this functionality? Or maybe there's some other new way to keep Firefox's CPU usage down?
