I think Snake Eater is a little overrated, I don't agree that it's the best in the series, so I would agree about 1 and 2 being superior, but it's definitely better than 4, how could you think otherwise? I went over this before, but here it is again for eternal prosperity: - Bland, relatively boring story that didn't really need telling.
- Terrible overhead camera when the game desperately needed a real 3rd person camera (in the original PS2 version of Snake Eater that I played).
- Awful pressure sensitive controls that make reliable aiming/shooting awkward to impossible.
- Radar items that are nearly useless and drain power too quickly.
- Needing to pause the game and change camos every five steps gets really old really quickly.
- Nearly all bosses can be beaten the same way: use the shotgun.
- Healing requires multiple steps for no real reason.
- Can sustain insane amounts of damage on Normal.
- Lousy 30fps on PS2 at all times (vs MGS2's 60).
That's all I can think off the top of my head. I'm sure the re-releases fix some of these but that wasn't the same game I played. Honestly, I was glad that I finished it so I never had to play it again. The story goes into Big Boss's origins, Big Boss is referred to in the other games as this huge legend, but just why exactly? I think that's definitely a story worth telling, in fact I'd even go as far to say it's the best prequel in any medium. As far as overhead camera and framerate go, I highly recommend you give the game another try with the HD collection, as both of these issues have been fixed and it seems a little unfair to continue to judge a game by its original version when updated ones have come out to be honest, not that I even noticed the frame rate difference when originally playing it, who noticed that when the graphics were so incredible at the time? I've never been one to obsess over framerate anyway so.... Changing the camo all the time is a bit annoying, but the extra steps when healing simply give the game more of the "John Rambo" feel of surviving out in the jungle. The key to defeating the bosses is to use a gun on them? Whoa, that totally changes what I otherwise thought were some of the best boss fights of all time, but for real, that fight with The End is fucking incredible, maybe even THE best boss fight of all time, at least as far as 3D games go. Agreed the radar stuff is pretty useless but I found you don't need them very often anyway. Have you tried playing it on hard? Anyway, you got me thinking about 3 and actually make me want to play it again. It really is an excellent game even if I still prefer 1 and 2.

As far as the overhead camera goes, whenever most people talk about how good MGS3 is they're probably talking about the later Subsistence release that was the basis for the HD version. The Snake Eater release wasn't exactly poorly received but that camera was complained about even back then.
My shame is that when I last posted in this topic I thought "1 credit clear" meant no deaths as opposed to not using a continue like when you run out of lives in a shmup. So there are actually several old-school games I can one credit clear I just can't (reliably) one-life clear or no damage run them.

I love MGS3's story, but its gameplay could use some work. Mostly, I really wish that Kojima didn't ever attempt to mess around with pressure-sensitive face buttons (holy shit they are inaccurate and unwieldy), and instead let the games have more traditional aiming controls.

Diablo 2 was mostly a waste of time. And a fine waste of time it was.

All games are a waste of time. But with some, you at least have fun while doing so.
Not Twilight Princess, that one is gargabe, though.

Monster Girl Quest actually has an enjoyable storyline. Not like I'm afraid to admit that, it's just that most people who played through it do I love MGS3's story, but its gameplay could use some work. Mostly, I really wish that Kojima didn't ever attempt to mess around with pressure-sensitive face buttons (holy shit they are inaccurate and unwieldy), and instead let the games have more traditional aiming controls. 3DS and Vita ports of the game throw away the whole "sensitive pressure buttons" thing, as far as I know.

Monster Girl Quest actually has an enjoyable storyline. Not like I'm afraid to admit that, it's just that most people who played through it do VNs can be a lot better than man people give them credit for, even ecchi ones. The public view is just dominated by crap like those lazy "here's the titty, be happy" Sakura Whatevers, or YT-bait "look how cray-cray, you date a shark/t-rex/trump in this" ones.

Great, now I'm stuck imagining a VN where all your dates are from the Trump administration. Or maybe you play as Trump, on a quest to I crave Trump's sperm! ...and find true love. E: Good to see that filter still working

Welp, MGQ is kinda both in a way - it's shamelessly pornographic, and it also has that heavy "Oh those weird Japanese people!" element to work as a YT bait, since you basically get raped a lot by dozens of different chimeras. It's just that storyline itself is surprisingly good for this kind of game, and there's a lot of care put behind it .u. VNs are getting more popular around EU and US lately, thanks to titles like Steins;Gate and Danganronpa (as well as Phoenix Right, which was probably the first novel that got true mainstream recognition outside of Japan), and there are more and more professionaly translated classics like Higurashi and Fate/Stay Night being released on Steam, so I think reputation of the genre will only get better with time. Not to mention Doki Doki Literature Club was a major sensation on the Internet, which is a good thing for VN fans out here.

Just because it gives you the tiddy doesn't mean it can't also be a good game or an interesting narrative. Like Saya no Uta. It's the lazy ones that only relay on the tiddy that are bad. Same with an out there gimmick, as long as you don't just throw out the gimmick ot rot in the sun. Like, I was super surprised how sincere and endearing Dream Daddy ways, fully expecting it just to be one tired "rofl, you date old guys in it, high-lair-ious #NoHomo", especially when the Game Grumps logo appeared. Great, now I'm stuck imagining a VN where all your dates are from the Trump administration. Or maybe you play as Trump, on a quest to I crave Trump's sperm! Play Rapelay and you are about there, I guess.

Nah, any time not working on healing cancer or reproducing is a waste of time.
