Everything about that game is awesome except the combat. It got so confusing I eventually gave up.
I bought the 4k remaster first PS4 from Play-Asia but I haven’t had much time to devote to it with the kids and all. I’d like to give it another shot, though, because I loved pretty much everything else about it.

It’s funny cause the combat looked incredible in trailers, so stylish and different. And then I got the game and it was absolutely incomprehensible. Even when the game explicitly tells you what to do I still couldn’t do it. Some people told me it eventuelly ”clicks” so perhaps I’ll try again someday.

I know it won't sit well with some people, but I can't stand the Last of Us. Too bleak and violent and too much stealth. From what I read about the sequel leaks,it's even nastier. Full Hostel\Saw territory.

I’d like to give it another shot, though, because I loved pretty much everything else about it. The combat in resonance of fate is awesome. The real issue is the tutorial. It actively teaches you the exact opposite way to play the game. If you keep fighting like in the tutorial you will have no fun. It's why it takes so long for the combat to click. It's worth looking up how the game should be played as it becomes amazing once you start playing it properly.

I've never actually played a DOOM game. I have played Duke 3D, Heretic, Blood, Quake, even Shadow Warrior, but not DOOM. I need to do it or my reputation (??) will be tarnished.

I think it’s worth a shot. Despite being primitive, Early Doom games are really fun. Doom 64 was just reissued on multiple platform I think (I’m playing it on the PC) and it’s a good one to start with.

Doom 64 is highly praised, but it may not be exactly true to the original formula. For the original games, I recommend using a source port like Crispy Doom / PrBoom+ on Windows, or MBF under DOSBox. The common to all these is that they have a high resolution option (at least 640x400). The original game's 320x200 resolution looks just way too bad on big modern LCDs. I do not recommend some of the more advanced ports (like GZDoom), because they change many properties of the engine, and tweak default settings in ways that are more oriented towards playing advanced mods, and not the original levels.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's a big problem that articles don't include links to the forum thread for them anymore. It's effective shutting out the forum from everything else. The mobile site literally has no link to it at all.

There is a German proverb that roughly translates to: "Those who are pronounced dead will live longer!"

This forum isn't that dead, all things considered. I've never actually played a DOOM game. I have played Duke 3D, Heretic, Blood, Quake, even Shadow Warrior, but not DOOM. I need to do it or my reputation (??) will be tarnished. It's excellent. DOOM has brilliant weapon/enemy synergy, especially DOOM II (though DOOM 1 has better level design). I highly, highly recommend playing Ultimate DOOM (I'm sure DOOM 64 is good, but as an introduction to the series, you gotta play the original).

Most forums sadly are, but I won't say it is totally dead... even if it's really different since I registered here 5 or so years ago and many regulars are nowhere to be seen now. Sure, there's the Discord, but I have a few problems in following it since as a huge chat there are way too many messages, and since English is not my main language I can't always reply at the right moment.

I started using the Discord on a total whim a few days ago, and it is kinda stressful trying to keep up with stuff even in the moment. I usually spend a long time even on a short forum post, and the sometimes rapid speed is just too much. I get that everything doesn't need to be etched in stone for all eternity, but I do feel like it's too ephemeral. I like looking at old, and it's nice to sometimes be able to get information on something more obscure even if it is just a small snippet.

I'm sure you'll be ok, it's not my first either.
I don't use it that much because chats don't work well for in-depth discussion as soon as there's a certain amount of people in one channel and because it's all ephemeral.
Classic Gaming (gfaqs), Racketboy and some subreddits are still pretty active.
