So I played through Penguin Adventure today and ran into a couple of issues. First off I couldn't get the continue code to work, and second I couldn't pause it normally (just pause the emulation) so I couldn't get the good ending. Is there an issue with this game in particular, with this aspect of emulating MSX games in general or what?
You're supposed to type a word at the level select (difficulty select I think, but also tried the map screen) screen to continue after getting a game over.

I don't know if you are familiar with MSX games, but the MSX was a computer, which means it had a keyboard, which means most games assign things like pausing, menus, and stuff to the keyboard.
So yes, the game has a native pause, you just have to find which key does it on the keyboard. Try all the F# keys, also letters like P, M, that could stand for Pause and Menu, etc.

Yes, I've tried all that - for some other games it was F1 for pause (though searching on it seemed to suggest it was Pause or Pause+some other key), and in Goonies for example I could type in passwords just fine. But in Penguin Adventure nothing seems to work.
Edit: Ok it actually was F1 for pause (or menu) in PA, dunno how I missed it before. Maybe you couldn't pause during the boss fight I tried it at. So that's one issue solved but it doesn't seem to take typed codes.

Don't know what to tell you, I sent that Continue code to gamefaqs myself and I tested it myself. Maybe you are typing NORIKO too fast?

I've run into another issue: I'm trying to run Psycho World HD (english translated version of the game) in this emulator but it doesn't boot up. I've tried cartridge insert, the three IDE options for special cartridge insert, and disk insert.
The JP version does work when using disk insert, but it freezes after the first level is finished.

Yes, exactly.
I also found an MIAPPLY patch now, but I'm not sure how to use it.

But that version is supposed to load right away. That's the version done to play on emus. Are you sure you aren't using the version that's made to play on a real MSX?

I'm confused. Are you trying to play a cartridge or a disk game? Note that with MSX, emulators apparently use hash lookups to figure out which mapper a game is using. Patched ROMs won't be recognized as a result and so they won't be able to automatically tell what mapper a game is using, and you will have to select it from the load menu I believe (check which one the Japanese version is using, I believe the blueMSX GUI will tell you while the game is running).

PsychoHD is a .dsk file, but I'm not sure. I just tried to follow the instruction on the download page, then eventuall tried everything.
But I've beaten the game now, I managed to get the JP version to keep playing after the first level by switching disks around and then checked YT clips for the translation.
