Yes! That had me very confused in Raiden IV. As for "demo", this was the first time I recall encountering that particular phrasing:

I remember the term "Metroid-vania" (note the hyphen) being used in a few places before this, though perhaps not in a review. I specifically remember one of Gamespy's top-whatever lists that they did in 2003 using the term in reference to Aria of Sorrow (One of the editors wrote something like 'I have a feeling this will be the last "Metroid-vania" on the GBA', complete with quotation marks), but most of their archives appear to be scrubbed from the internet now, so I can't find it. Fuck. This will drive me nuts.

( web.archive.org/web/20040823231430/http://archive.gamespy.com/reviews/may03/castlevaniaaosgba/) I poked around a little bit, and none of the other mentions of AoS use that phrase at all or really bring up Metroid at all. I kinda get the feeling that the review is the earliest mention in relation to AoS on Gamespy. Still earlier than the 1up review. It's definitely a term that's been kicking around for a while though. I certainly doubt that's the earliest.

Jeremy parish always gets credited for inventing the word but always said he didn't and it was in use across the internet and forums before that review.

He's said he got it from Scott Sharkey. I've seen some posts about it being used on obscure forums as well but that was just a forum user claiming they coined it.
But that's interesting, I've asked in other places and didn't find anything earlier. I'll have to update the info on my site.
Edit: Checked the gamespy review of Harmony of Dissonance and it's not used there. Couldn't find a 1up review of it, they launched in 2003 so that might be why.

Excellent sleuthing, though that's not the article I had in mind, and neither is the holiday guide posted above. Mine was from an editor round-table format (with the pictures of the editors beside their comments on each entry) like what they did in all their "top 25 ___" lists, so I'm assuming it was from one of those or a similar feature.
Though the mention you found is even earlier, so good job.

Does the word "minigame" (i.e., a game within a game) predate Mario Party (N64, 1998), or was the term coined for it?
Older sources seem to refer to what we would now call minigames as bonus levels or bonus games, or occasionally "subgames". Certainly MP seems to have at least standardized the term "minigame" for this sort of thing. Any earlier examples?

phediuk I'm fairly certain the term minigame was in use in video game media before 1998, if not in the games themselves. PSX RPGs were often described as having minigames.
