I always feel like Toejam and Earl: Panic on Funkotron gets unfairly overlooked. I can see why, though. The original was so unique and then they followed it up with a platformer, the mid-90s equivalent to a Destiny clone or Battle Royale game. But it was a really good platformer! I really loved the big, explorative levels and the slightly collectathon, slightly kill-all-humans style gameplay. It looked and sounded amazing, too. The voice samples are amongst the clearest on the console (I think only the "Hey, catch!" soundbite has the signature Mega Drive crackle) and the music gives me real Herbie Handcock vibes with its grooves. To actually contribute to the thread the original Flashback is considered to be light years beyond its sequel and remake. And it might be slightly more controversial but there is a pretty large consensus that Streets of Rage 2 is better than the other SoR games. I think Suikoden 2 fits as well. We had a whole thing about how Suikoden 1 is actually better than 2 a while back. Which it is. Regarding SoR, 2 is definitely the most popular, but the whole trilogy is very solid.

Toejam & Earl -- The upcoming game may change things, but until then, TJ&1 is regarded much more highly than its side-scrolling Genesis sequel and ill-conceived OG Xbox follow-up. Perfect Dark -- the original; safe to say no one gives a shit about Zero or the Game Boy Color game. I give a shit about Zero, I was pleasantly surprised when I played it last year, divorced from having to be the first big system seller for the 360 it's a perfectly fine game with a unique visual style that is still pleasing to the eye to this day. And I think Toejam and Earl 3 is underrated as well, it translates the gameplay style of the first game into 3D pretty well, the only real problem is the game's sometimes bizarre humor, but it's a lot of fun to play. Yes, Panic on Funkotron is way underrated too, while it may not be as unique as the first game it looks and sounds amazing like you say and is a really good game in it's own right.

Steel Battalion -- Everyone remembers the first game and its massive controller. No one remembers its sequel, which came without that controller, or its second sequel, which replaced the controller with the Kinect.

I've never actually played 1 and I've barely even played 2 but hardly anyone seems to acknowledge that anything other than 2 exists elsewhere online! As for SoR, it's true that the whole trilogy is well liked but SoR 2 is the only one that people generally consider a "greatest of all time" contender.

Almost everyone considers Project Zero 2 to be the best of that franshise.

When people talks about Tempest, it is usually Tempest 2000 and its amazing chiptune soundtrack.

The original Tempest was a few orders of magnitude more popular in its heyday though. Golden age arcade hit vs. a Jaguar game.

Space Invaders fits well. None of the games after the original have achieved even a tenth of its notoriety, and there isn't really a diehard Space Invaders fanbase rooting for another entry either.

And while we're on the subject of Taito, Arkanoid is way more popular than any of its sequels.

Crysis. First was revolutionary, the rest seemed to have missed the point.
I'd debate Rocket Knight Adventures in that the SNES Sparkster is pretty good, but the rest, yeah, not so much.

Rastan - The first game is an old-school arcade classic, 2 is mediocre, and 3 isn't that well-known (it's not bad though)

Crysis. First was revolutionary, the rest seemed to have missed the point. Warhead's almost as good as the first imo.
Crysis 2 is still alright although it was badly console-ized.
Crysis 3 is totally meh in every way except as a technical showcase though.

Almost everyone considers Project Zero 2 to be the best of that franshise. And they'd be wrong, I like both the first and third games better. Although 2 is still really good. Crysis. First was revolutionary, the rest seemed to have missed the point. I just find it weird that they changed the setting from the jungle to NYC, I thought the whole point was the lush jungle environments, much like Far Cry.

Oh yeah, I forgot all about Crysis. I first played Crysis 2, and geez was it mediocre. Then just earlier this year, I finally played Crysis for the first time, and I really liked it quite a bit! It definitely scratched that Far Cry 1 itch I was looking to fulfill. Crysis Warhead is also alright, though noticeably more constrained in scope and with worse pacing than the main game. I haven't played 3 yet, but I'm not expecting much from it.

The first Earthworm Jim probably counts. I never saw anyone preferring the second game over it. Does the first Gex count? And while we're at it, do two games make a series in this case? Brave Fencer Musashi, Bushido Blade, ActRaiser are still fondly remembered compared to their sequels. Chrono Cross got some flack back in the day for not being a straight sequel for Trigger. People have since mellowed out on it, but Chrono Trigger is still the most popular. The first Final Fantasy Tactics and its remake, and on a similar vein the first Tactics Ogre (If we're lumping the games from both Ogre sub-series). Star Ocean: The Second Story is probably the most popular in the series owing to the first game being somewhat obscure until the localized PSP remake and the problems the 3rd and 4th games had. The 5th game seems to have come and gone and nobody seems to care enough to bring it up. What's the consensus on car combat games? Twisted Metal 2 & the first Vigilante 8 seem to have been the peak of the genre back in the PS1 days but then that died out after the mediocre 989 TM sequels and even the well reviewed Twisted Metal Black didn't reignite the franchise that much. We had a whole thing about how Suikoden 1 is actually better than 2 a while back. Which it is. Where is this discussion? Unless the search function is broken or you guys were using shorthand for Suikoden I couldn't find anything here as far back as 2016.
