I got this today (or... I guess it's yesterday now lol) for the Switch. This isn't perfect (I do wish the controls could be remapped), but it seems like a very nice collection, and I'm happy to own it. I never had most of these Castlevania games growing up, so it'll be cool to finally dig into them (as well as to see what the Japanese versions are like when they arrive) I can't wait to see how the Contra collection turns out. Getting to play Castlevania games for the first time, I envy you.
The biggest regional changes I'm aware of apply to Castlevania III, which has improved audio quality and is more balanced difficulty-wise in the Japanese version. And US Belmont's Revenge has the cross-boomerang subweapon replaced by an axe (because Jesus wouldn't approve, I guess). And the Japanese Castlevania IV has hazardous liquid that is red instead of green (I actually prefer the latter, because it looks more like "acid") and some dripping blood in the intro. Therer are some more changes, but nothing major if I'm not mistaken.

I just realized that the version of Kid Dracula in the collection is the Famicom game, not the Game Boy one (which I've heard is far better). Bollocks.
Also, a quick question for anyone playing on PC: are those hardware requirements on Steam actually true, or was it just an error that someone made and it can run on anything without issue? I'd really like to try CV and do so legally, but not if the requirements are for insanely powerful machines.

The Game Boy game is kind of a sequel anyway.

From what I've heard, yeah, the Konami Anniversary collections require Windows 10. It's pretty absurd; I haven't checked the forums in awhile for updates, but last I checked, there had yet to be a workaround developed to get this game working on other OSes. It's the main reason why I got the Switch version - otherwise I literally wouldn't be able to play these, lol D:
By the way, I just beat Kid Dracula ^_________^ yayyyy! To be honest... it's not that great a game. I mean, it's okay... but it's sorta clunky, and eventually becomes really difficult, moreso because of said clunkiness than because of interesting design. But it shows some potential; there are some cute moments in the game, and the new English localization is pretty cute (including a Metal Gear reference of all things). All in all, I think it's worth checking out if you're curious, but I wouldn't recommend buying the Anniversary collection solely to play Kid Dracula.
So... the Game Boy version is reportedly better? Perhaps I should give it a try.

DF RETROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Fortunately, it seems like most games in this collection are emulated pretty well... with the exception of the very first NES game, oddly enough. Aside from the fact they included Revision 0 instead of Revision 1 (which means some game-breaking glitches are present here), there also is an emulation error when it comes to the music, with a weird popping noise showing up in places. I hope M2 can fix that at the same time as they patch the Japanese versions into the collection.

So the rest of the Contra collection titles include
-Contra NES -Contra Famicom -Super Probotector -Contra: Hard Corps -Probotector (MD) -Operation C
That's right. Contra NES and Famicom are being considered separate games, same with the Probotector pairs. Fantastic. That's 5 unique games; and even if you count ports separately, that's 7.

What about Contra Rebirth and the MSX Contra? Or even vaguely related games like Sunset Riders and Mystic Warriors?

It sucks, but I would prefer those variants than having MSX Contra, Contra Force and Contra Alien Wars (GB). Those games suck. There's not much else Contra related they can add that doesn't suck. More recent or the 3D games that will probably come in another collection.

Haha MSX Contra. I said as a joke they might include that since that was already ported to the VC so it would be easy to translate that code over to this collection. Guess they had another vision in mind when it comes to shafting this series as usual.
IMO, Contra Alien Wars GB doesn't suck (and I find it better than the quantity>quality GBA version). I would have much preferred that gets added than expecting people to accept regional variants as separate titles. They're still technically short 1 game.

Strange, I got a DNS error when I first tried to post this :/ But anyways: kotaku.com/konami-reveals-full-contra-anniversary-lineup-and-its-1835067936Unique games: Contra (Arcade) Super Contra (Arcade) Contra (NES) Super C (NES) Operation C (Game Boy) Contra III: The Alien Wars (SNES) Contra: Hard Corps (Sega Genesis) Regional variants: Contra (Famicom/NES - Japan) Probotector (Mega Drive/Genesis - Europe) Super Probotector: Alien Rebels (SNES - Europe) coming after launch (all Japanese versions): Contra (Arcade) Super Contra (Arcade) Super Contra (Famicom, aka Super C) Contra Spirits (Super Famicom, aka Contra III) Contra (Game Boy, aka Operation C) Contra: The Hard Corps (Mega Drive, aka Contra: Hard Corps) Needless to say, I'm pretty excited for this. I actually own all of these games already in some form or another, but Contra is one of my favorite things ever, and it would be nice to have this on my Switch so I can do 2-player Contra with anyone at any time (also so I can play arcade Super Contra without being forced to use a 360 controller) As for what I don't own... I'm really curious to see the Japanese and European versions of these games. I'm gonna finally be able to try a Probotector game Also for players who might otherwise struggle with it, the Japanese version of Hard Corps has a life bar, which makes the game much more manageable than in the US version. (I personally can do without it though, speaking as someone who's beaten the US Hard Corps without dying #totallybragging ). Another notable thing is the Famicom version of the first Contra features some unique graphical features that are lacking in the international NES releases (like pulsating alien flesh in the final stage). All in all, I totally want this. EDIT: So the rest of the Contra collection titles include -Contra NES -Contra Famicom -Super Probotector -Contra: Hard Corps -Probotector (MD) -Operation C That's right. Contra NES and Famicom are being considered separate games, same with the Probotector pairs. Fantastic. That's 5 unique games; and even if you count ports separately, that's 7. I'd personally consider the NES Contra and Super C to essentially be different games from their respective arcade versions. The NES games expanded a lot on them, and feature some unique content, and in my opinion are much better games. I'm especially happy that the NES Contra is finally being rereleased again, when it never did come to the Virtual Console for whatever reason.

I mean I kind of get including arcade and NES versions of these games, especially since the arcade is where this all started. But I'm honestly not big on them trying to pass off the Probotector variants as being legitimately separate titles in this list, same goes for Contra Famicom.

I hope the Arcade collection gives us Japanese versions too. Wave 2, aside from Castlevania or Contra what ones could work? Bomberman: Super 1 super 2 Super 3 (last one localized unfortunately) Bomberman NES II NES '93 '94 GB 2 (aka GB in US due to Wario Blast) Classic Metal Gear doesn't have enough games but hear me out 1. MG MSX 2. MG2 MSX 3. MG NES 4. Snake's Revenge NES 5. Ghost Babel GBC 6. Snatcher SCD 7 Policenauts (localized "surprise we had the original English plans from back in the day") 8.

Well yeah, they're essentially the same game - that's true. Either way though, I'm glad they're covering every essential 8 and 16-bit game in the series, including ones that had previously been snubbed for Virtual Console releases.

Hoping they'll add Symphony of the Night at some point, so that there can be a way to play it on the Switch.

If they added Symphony without also adding Rondo, I would be pissed. Might as well just include them as part of the next Castlevania collection.
