And that's fine, if that's what you're going for -- but don't call it Battletoads, then! Because that ain't Battletoads anymore. Like I said, it looks quite a bit like the latest TMNT reboot / incarnation - a series that also started out as a bloody underground comic, but re-invented itself many times over and over as time went on. It CAN be done, if you find common ground across all versions and make them feel like they share a common thread. With TMNT, it's easy, it's the brotherhood theme. With Battletoads - well, it remains to be seen. 90s edginess ain't it it seems, and given the only people who remember 90s edginess fondly ARE 50 year olds in suits, that might be a good thing. Uhh... I'm a 39-year-old, and I hate suits. And I remember '90s edginess VERY fondly! And I know I'm not alone in that... -Tom

I get the necessity for a redesign, but...wow, they really dropped the ball on the Dark Queen design, if that's even her. There aren't that many recognizable female villains, so it's a shame they couldn't come up with something better for one of the more known ones.

And given how long we've had to deal with goddamn '80s nostalgia when everyone used to know it was the corniest decade in pop culture, it's about time we get our moment. Those horrible redesign make them look like something out of some obnoxious comedy cartoon rather than the action comics looks they were going for. The original designs were way better. There's no "need" for a redesign.

The new art style is okay. It's not what I would've preferred, as I'm not a fan of overly angular character designs. And the overall on-screen action also could be less busy at times and some more frames of animation here and there wouldn't hurt. But as a whole it looks competent.
When it comes to the Dark Queen, I think the original design was a bit lame. It did not really fit in there with all the anthropomorphic animal characters and it was hardly original (she's basically Elvira). Admittedly she was *somewhat* memorable, but her only defining traits where "sexy" and "evil". The supposedly new design looks a bit bland, but it might be a bit early to judge.
Gameplay-wise I do hope they won't stick too closely to the older games. The 8 and 16 bit games were always a mixed bag: While the beat'em up segments usually were okay (but not great), the platforming could be rather frustrating. (However, I haven't played the arcade game, which is supposedly the best.)

I do prefer '80s aesthetics and atmosphere, honestly. But '90s 'tude has its own charm as well, and Battletoads without it just isn't Battletoads.
I also quite liked the gameplay variety in the original games -- I liked that one stage was never ANYTHING like the last, ensuring you're constantly learning new mechanics or dealing with new tricks. The platforming stages were some of my favorites, in fact! The only real downside to them was the difficulty, which ensured I could rarely ever get far enough to see what all the game had to offer. With my brother's help, I actually did make it all the way to the end of the NES game ONCE, but we died on the Dark Queen.
So for me personally, I hope they kept the platforming levels in addition to the beat-em-up levels, but just... dialed down the difficulty a tiny bit.

I admire that they tried to put in as much gameplay-variety as possible into the original games, especially the first NES entry. There's a lot of creativity and technical prowess at display. But I feel like this ambitious approach came at the cost of being less polished overall. The controls in particular felt too slippery for platforming.
The 3D perspective for the Turbo Tunnel seems like a smart move to me, so if they apply similar tweaks and tighter controls to the original ideas it might work for me.
