A couple of mega drive games I purchased recently don't display properly on my mega drive model 2; the screen is in black and white and flickers up and down, with both of them. Is this a sign of busted cartridges?
The games are G-Loc Air Battle and Empire of Steel, both from the same person.
I tried one of my other games and that one displayed fine.
Empire of steel stopped flickering once I was through the main menu's and in the game. But G-loc continues to flicker even once in the game.

It might be that something is confusing your TV into thinking it's a signal type from a different region, like an NTSC game on a PAL system or vice versa.

My TV is a Panasonic LCD TV: TX-L26X20B. I tried the games on a second TV I don't yet have the details of; the games didn't flicker on that TV, but both games and another third game that displays fine on my main TV, all displayed in grey scale on it. I'm not a technical person. All I know is that two games I ordered off the same seller at the same time, exhibit the same flickering issues on my main TV and that none of my other Mega Drive games have any issues; G-loc in game and Empire of Steel in non-game screens. Which is why I am concerned that the cartridges are faulty? This is a poor phone captured video of the flickering in G-loc on my main TV. www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqUMNn_IUkk&feature=youtu.be

I've had this happen as well with some games. It was down to my TV as some games worked, others didn't while the games were grand on other peoples TVs. Bubsy was one I remember that gave me trouble.

I have a similar problem with my NES and have never been able to find the actual cause, but I think it's probably the contacts. Since you got two from the same seller that aren't working properly, that'd be my guess as the root cause. Have you tried disassembling the cartridges and checking those out?

If all games are purchased from the same seller, then it's quite likely all games are from the wrong region. I'm assuming you are somewhere in Europe; did you buy from a North American seller? Did the listing clearly state the whether games were NTSC or PAL?
Another dumb question: you have tried cleaning them, yes?
Cartridges very rarely fail, so it's probably something else.

Megadrive games from NTSC region will run at 50Hz on a PAL system.
I think some TVs just have issues with some display modes on some systems or with colours.

Yes I am in Europe; hence why I say Mega drive instead of Genesis I have decided to return the games; the seller has agreed to a return. Thank you for all the information and suggestions.
