I saw these in the comments. Maybe it helps. "loved the extra "hidden" sections of stages that seemed to happen if you did well, and becoming pink, and then green...." "Wasn’t there an area that totally changed the game depending on whether you go over or under the bridge?" "as long as you collect enough of the balloons during the city level (Level 1) and go through the Desert with the Lucky Birds and grab all the power drinks then you can be green. It is the only stage where you can be green. You must get all the Lucky Birds in the desert and then the final drink that is dropped toward the end of the level. The helmet is only in the sky level (if you get enough balloons and go through the Skull Building section) and the shoes which you also see in this video are only in level 3 if you pass through the dance section with all the sea urchins." "What exactly the requirements to access the stage 3's secret area? I always got there spending close to zero time in the water, but my guess is points" Also this: strategywiki.org/wiki/Gumshoe#Optional_Areas

Thanks so much, Rey. I definitely see it now.
Another question: Do we know the release date of the Arcade version? It appears it came first, based on the use of the Walking on Sunshine soundalike in stage 2. The NES version was released in August 1986.

Figuring out release dates of 80s games is an exercise in frustration.
