I recently replayed the original game, just to see what is the best level to finish it that's below the maximum of 30. I tried finishing it at 20, but the escape rate was way too hellish for me. Turns out agility plays a part in running away from tough enemies, and if you don't have much by the time you reach Charlock Castle, you're bound to be blocked by the toughest enemies there. So what's the best level to finish the game at that's not 30?

I don't have the NES version any more to compare, but I was level 20 when I finished on the GBC edition. Probably a factor of the re-balancing though.

I think I was around level 20 when I beat the game on the NES. Maybe 21 or 22. I remember the final battle came down to the wire though. Another round or two and I wouldn't have made it.

Okay, I'll try level 22 the next time I play the original version.
Obviously, I don't think it's a good idea to try to go to the final dungeon, without getting all ten spells first.

Level 25. Your strength goes up like, 9 or 10 points. And that can make all the difference.

I like how in Dragon Warrior games 1 level can be the difference between a boss destroying you, or you destroying the boss.
