Maze Action games basically (except Bomberman and such), the puzzle aspect of GT is optional.
I don't know much about these games after the mid 90s or so, though I have played Xeno Crisis.

Since you mention XenoCrisis and Smash TV:
Wizard of Wor (Game from the 1980's)
Not quite sure if it counts, but it is kinda a precursor.

The Higemaru games from Capcom, which I did an article on ten years ago (man, I'm old!) are very similar to Goof Troop.

That game also may very well have been the origin of the "Metal Slime Trope" (hard to kill enemies, but a very nice reward if you're successful), which was popularized in Dragon Quest. Killing the fast-moving Worluk doubles all point totals for the following level.

Sure, I know about most of the 1980s ones. This is a good precursor, I mean since it's single screen there isn't much of an exploration aspect. Thanks everyone so far. I have beaten Alien Syndrome once, it was pretty decent even if repetitive and shallow. Gunman's Proof I would describe as an action adventure, the world is interconnected with an overworld and dungeons and you gain some char upgrades. But yeah it's a good game.

Maze Action? I think the three games you mentioned are actually pretty different:
Smash TV is an evolution of Robotron/Berzerk. This genre had an indie revival in the early 2000s that is still going pretty strong and produced a ton of great games like Geometry Wars, Mutant Storm, Nex Machina, Super Stardust HD, Assault Android Cactus, Nuclear Throne, etc.
Chaos Engine is a descendant of games like Gauntlet that also have Adventure/RPG elements. For older titles I can highly recommend the two Dungeon Explorer games on PC Engine (especially with 3-5 players). I haven't played the later Gauntlet/DE games but going by reviews they seem pretty decent as well. Children of Morta, Darksiders Genesis, Dungeon League, Hammerwatch, Vikings: Wolves of Midgard, etc. are modern entries in this genre. And if you don't mind even more RPG elements then you could also include Diablo and the many games inspired by it.
Goof Troop is a puzzle-heavy Action-Adventure that has more in common with games like Lolo in my opinion.

Batman for the TG-16? It's a sort of goofy maze game. Great music though.

Yeah that OST is pretty great. I remember being kind of apathetic about the game but I might check it out again. Maze Action? I don't think Goof Troop qualifies as AA due to it being level-based and linear without backtracking to previous levels, and it having non-persistent items and upgrades across levels. I've also seen multi-directional shooter used for the first two or Robotron, but there's no exploration element in most such games from what I can tell just glancing at a wikipedia list of them, which is there in Chaos Engine, Gauntlet and to an extent in Smash TV. I would consider Dungeon Explorer and Diablo as AA and ARPG respectively, but I haven't played the sequels to DE and I liked the first alright so I'll check those out. Thanks for the recommendations!

Smash TV doesn't really have exploration, there is just a set of levels for each area that can be tackled in no particular order. The game was made by Eugene Jarvis and is an evolution of Robotron, which he also co-developed. The way I would describe these two "genres" is something like this: Robotron lineage: stage/round-based, twin-stick controls, highscore-centric, temporary upgrades, single-player Gauntlet lineage: exploration & progression, standard control scheme, classes with different abilities, adventure and rpg mechanics, permanent upgrades, co-op You might still like some of the newer "Robotron-likes" as they often feature fairly big levels (and good music!):

It clearly does have exploration I think - there are alternate paths to the boss, a map, and hidden rooms as well.
Gauntlet (1, haven't played the others besides 4) - Well they have different starting stats, there's minor inventory management and the stat upgrades that last until you die or they're stolen, but there's no backtracking or interconnected world, no towns or shops, leveling, etc. So I'd say it's a maze action game w/ some AA or RPG elements.
Quest mode in Gauntlet IV I would say takes it over the edge to an ARPG as it's almost as complex as Zela 1, and has leveling with manual stat allocation as well.
Nex Machina does look pretty sweet!

I guess you know Zombies and Ghoul Patrol, but they also have a PSX quasi-successor called Herc's Adventures.
Alien Breed, the old ones as well as the new (though the new have a bit more linear levels, the co-op is pretty fun)l.
True Lies on SNES might kinda fall in there?
Mageslayer on PC I remember as basically Doom from a top-down perspective. Machine Hunter is also similar, both pretty grimdark and gory.
There's a handful of GBC games you might or might not wanna count, such as Mission Impossible, Perfect Dark, the 007 Movie tie-in (was it Tomorrow Never Dies or World is not Enough?) or Warriors of Might and Magic.

Ah cool, didn't know Herc's was connected to those. I've never given GP much of a chance, so maybe I should.
True Lies I've played some ways into and it wasn't bad; good controls and moveset but I got bored somewhere around the sewers level.
I'll check out those other ones, thanks!

I'm not going to be able to point out any revelation of games like this beyond the ps1 since I think they pretty much stopped being made. I did think it was worth mention that some modern roguelikes are structured this way eg. Enter the Gungeon and Binding of Isaac. Of course I'm sure you're aware of these two and they may not be what you're looking for because, well, they're roguelikes.

Oh, just remembered Tower 57, pretty good pixel art indie game from a few years ago.
Also got a soft spot for Silver Bullet, though I couldn't say it's great with a straight face.
