I remember noticing the flashing in CV2: Belmont's Revenge's and Bubble Bobble's effects back then but I could be misremembering.

Have you guys seen this series of videos by Sharopolis on YouTube? They're pretty good...

Yes, and I agree. A bunch of them are more along the lines of games that did something technically impressive rather than being an overall impressive game that holds up though.

An obvious one Yoshi's Island on the SNES, could almost pass for a PS1 title if it had a higher resolution. Something like Lomax doesn't look that much better; Rayman and Little Ralph do though.

Definitely peak SNES platformer though there is a clear detail and color difference in Rayman and Lomax and YI also used extra chips in the cart for some effects, plus it was a 1995 game. However games like Evermore, SD3, Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia pushed detail and color use further and look more on par with those. Btw I ended up making pretty extensive screenshot galleries for 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit games earlier, used them in some gamefaqs graphics focused polls: worldsunraveled.weebly.com/screenshot-comparion-galleries.html1987 and later ARC games were sorted as 32-bit here. Wasn't sure about the categorization of some earlier 3D efforts.

Evermore is one I could never beat, might need to revisit it. Chrono Trigger is another incredible looking and sounding one from 95; also one I've not managed to complete.

Definitely try the rebalance hack for Evermore by Ninakoru if you can, it flows better and is more satisfying overall. It's also compatible with the 2-player patch (though that one does have a couple of bugs). You might still get stumped at some of the various mazes though, might wanna use a guide map for those.
CT absolutely, still looks awesome.

I did think of some other Super Famicom games that look particularly good due to great sprite work and use of colour but maybe that's worth creating another topic for in itself?

Oh go ahead if you want. If it's like a 1996 or later game and in a series/franchise then maybe it's more of a natural evolution of artists and programmers mastering their craft and the hardware though? But we don't need to keep it too strict either.
