I've recently modded my 3DS and figured out how to inject GBA games into its Virtual Console emulator, so I've been trying to get into playing GBA games. However, I'm looking to play really easy games - platformers, beat-em-ups and the like - because I've been having some sensory overload issues and would like to play games that help prevent that to some extent. What I'm specifically looking for are games that aren't easy for their genre (I heard that about TMNT, but those bike-riders on the first stage are the absolute worst), but games that are just very easy for inexperienced or young players to get into and enjoy.
My knowledge of the system's library is very lacking, so any recommendations in this area would be very much appreciated.

I think you should be OK with Wario Land 4. It has nice sized sprites and not a whole lot on screen at one time. Of course there's the Mario Advance series as well, but those are ports.
Also maybe DragonBall Advanced Adventure would be a good fit. It's a nice beat em up with light platforming.

Anything Kirby or Starfy, Drill Dozer, Slime Mori Mori Dragon Quest and Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance are fun but easy romps.

I would say Zelda: Minish Cap but maybe it’s too involved to fit here. It’s very short for a Zelda game though, and I don’t think I died even once. It’s also THE best game on the GBA in my opinion.

I had fun with Godzilla: Domination. It feels a lot like the Genesis version of King of the Monsters 2, but with the Godzilla license. Good for playing in short bursts.

Harmony of Dissonance
I remember Konami Krazy Racers game being pretty easy but it's been a while

Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland seems like an obvious one. Amazing Mirror requires a bit more brainpower than that one.
Frogger's Adventures: Temple of the Frog is short and easy and surprisingly good.
I think the bit Generations titles would be worth checking out. They usually have very simple graphics, so that might be good. One of them is even supposed to be played using only sound.

I have to vehemently veto Harmony of Dissonance. Well, maybe not *that* vehemently, since combat-wise it is actually pretty easy and dashing around is kinda fun. But in terms of finding the correct path, I found it to be the most confusing and thus aggravating of the GBA Castlevanias. But my guess is that you're not looking for these types of games anyway?
While not super-easy, I can vouch for Kim Possible 2 - Drakken's Demise. I remember it as striking a good balance between accesibility and challenge. Only if you want to 100% it, it can get somewhat tricky. Overall it's a rock-solid pick up and play experience.

Knightmare in Dream and Amazing Mirror are probably the best options. Starfy is too, but none of the GBA games have translations which may or may not be an issue. HoD feels more like easy for its genre rather than being an easy game per se. The bosses are very easy, but it is a sprawling game.

You really can't go wrong with Kirby. All the games are very fun while still remaining pretty easy.
I've actually never played this one, but River City Ransom EX maybe? If it's anything like the original, it's easy. Penalties for dying are minimal and if you just grind hard enough you'll make it through the game.

River City Ransom EX is a good suggestion. Easy, and you can grind your way to being powerful if necessary.
As GBA Castlevania games go, I would say Aria of Sorrow is pretty easy. Circle of the Moon if you want a bit more challenge.
Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure is very easy, cool, and graphically stylish fun that does a good job of following the Dragon Ball canon as a beat'em up platformer.
Advance Guardian Heroes.
Mario Advance 3:Yoshi's Island.

Wow, that's a lot of replies! Thank you all for the recommendations, and I'll reply to some of them since I've got some free time. Also maybe DragonBall Advanced Adventure would be a good fit. It's a nice beat em up with light platforming. I've played Advanced Adventure a few times over the years. In fact, I reviewed it for the website a few years ago (although it must be said that I've come to regret how I wrote the review, mainly because I didn't understand the point of HG101 at the time and wrote something a bit harsher and less enthusiastic than if I attempted to review it now). Frogger's Adventures: Temple of the Frog is short and easy and surprisingly good.
Man, I forgot about the Frogger games on the GBA. I heard about them through Nitro Rad's videos and I've been meaning to check them out - particular The Forgotten Relic with its more adventure-based set-up and village full of cute funny animals. Now's a good time as any to get into them, so thanks for that. (Also, this ain't related, but I recently saw the film your profile pic came from and I grinned like an idiot. What a strange, but memorable reference to make with your pic.) I have to vehemently veto Harmony of Dissonance.
I'm happy to play some handheld Metroidvanias if they're any good. In fact, I was playing Metroid Fusion just last week and enjoying it a fair bit until I ran into that blasted Yakuza spider boss - the one that keeps grabbing you and draining your health. I've recently realized that I hate sections in games where you're grabbed by an enemy and have to mash an unknown amount of buttons to break free; the uncertainty of it stresses me out way too much and has put me off playing Fusion (even if I were to attempt the easier difficulty in the Japanese version). I've not played a lot of Harmony, but I have heard that its level design in particular is pretty monotonous and irritating. So I may leave it, especially if trying to find the way forward is as frustrating as you say it is. River City Ransom EX is a good suggestion. Easy, and you can grind your way to being powerful if necessary. I did give it a try some weeks ago, but couldn't get into it for whatever reason. I do appreciate that you're allowed to tweak the experience as much as you like, from the amount of damage done to the enemy attack patterns to even doubling the number of enemies in each area, so maybe I'll give it another shot and just change the settings so they're much easier.

While HoD is kind of confusing and tedious in some parts of the beginning on a first play, you might waste 1-2 hours at most. You could always look up where to go though.
You don't get grabbed in HoD IIRC; maybe some boss in Dawn or Aria did that though but it's brief and I don't think you pressed some specific button to break free.
SotN is also pretty easy if you just explore a lot and so was Aria to me, but that was after having played the previous games.
