Okay, I got it I think. I'm rating them on a combination of quality and spookiness, for the record. Only like half are actually "Halloween"-themed, but there you go. 10 - RedCat Spookkasteel: This might look like crap (it's a small Dutch PC game from the 90's (?); you can probably guess what the title translates to), but it's made for kids, and as a kid, this was not only really fun, but legitimately spooky. I remember having to play one part for a friend because he found it too scary. It also crashed on most people's PCs towards the end of the game, so I didn't know many people as a kid who had beaten it. Just check it out.9 - Resident Evil (GCN): Definitely gotta replay this some time, and play more RE. As it stands, one of the most atmospheric games on this list, for sure, but not necessarily my favorite. 8 - Dark Souls: I completely forgot about this. It's not only spooky as hell, but gameplay-wise it complements it too. It's scary to go new places because it's hard, and dying can sometimes really sting. 7 - Castlevania: Rondo of Blood: Favorite Castlevania I've played so far. 6 - Quake: Definitely a spooky game, now that I think of it. Also kind of spooky from a gameplay-perspective, if that makes any sense. 5 - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: Most of the dungeons have a very dark and dungeon-esque feeling, with dark textures and lighting, creepy music, and a lot of horror-influenced enemies. MM and TP might be seen as more dark, but I think this one is a much better fit, actually. Especially MM isn't that dark outside of the story and some thematics. 4 - The Ultimate DOOM: Would place higher if I rated purely by quality. However, it is a pretty spooky game nonetheless. I mean, you literally go to hell and meet demons and flying skulls and zombies. But apart from that, gameplay-wise it can often be tense, with monster traps, dark hallways and disorienting blinking lighting. Really difficult DOOM mods usually make me play real carfully and expect traps around every corner. It can get pretty 'scary', for sure. 3 - Rayman 2: Not every stage is spooky, of course, but this has so many creepy stages and moments that I have to place it very high. There's not like a horror-themed world or just one or two stages, it's something recurring in the game that I feel is a stand-out aspect of the game (just look at how much spooky there is in games that are derived from this game, like Rayman M or the GBA Rayman 3). 2 - Minecraft: This game legitimately creeps me out even as an adult. I think one thing they did well in the recent Smash reveal trailer was understand that Minecraft caves are creepy as hell. There's enemies making unsettling sounds, tons and tons of disorienting underground tunnel generation, and even if I place my torches as well as I can, it's still possible to get lost and have to improvise. Not to mention, most of the enemies in the game are spooky (skeletons, zombies, spiders), and there's an entire hell world to explore, plus another world inhabited by the creepy Endermen. If you build a lot of stuff but don't light the environment enough, you'll end up being swarmed by enemies at night, some of which might blow your hard work up, which can be pretty startling if it happens behind your back. There's also just something about the way enemies move and the way the maps are sometimes generated that's just so unsettling to me. Like, the generation is really sophisticated on the one hand, but also sometimes produces these weird cut-offs or random little holes in the terrain. Probably the creepiest game to actually play for me, but since it's not actually a horror-themed game, I'm gonna give to top slot to... 1 - Luigi's Mansion 2: An easy pick, since it's the best proper spooky-themed game on this list. Honorable Mention: Banjo-Kazooie. I don't think it's spooky enough, but the main hub is a haunted castle (?) that belongs to a witch. The N64 was very effective at making dark castle/cavern type environments look spooky. EDIT: Changed Metroid to Dark Souls and moved it up a spot. Unbelievable I forgot Dark Souls.

Quickly on Nosferatu being $300 I was curious if this was unusual for an SNES game in the States? It seems a pretty common price here in the UK now. Retro game prices are climbing at ridiculous speed and SNES has always been ahead of the pack. Heck, I was interested in picking up a game last week and found it was selling for £1000. It really just depends on the game. I imagine US SNES NTSC games are more plentiful than Euro SNES PAL games, which might account for supply/rarity, and pricing. But just for US examples, let's say a loose cartridge of Demon's Crest will range from $90~$120. Complete-in-Box will take it roughly $300. Chrono Trigger is roughly $80, just for the cartridge. $300 ~ $400 CiB.Actraiser is $40~ $60 for cartridge. $250 or so for CiB. Legend of Zelda is around $35 ~ 45 for cartridge. $150, CiB. Bloody hell, what were you looking to get that ended up being 1000 quid? That's quite the price.

Snake - it was Madou Monogatari on PC Engine. A passing fancy. Kind of related to this topic in that I was horrified by the price.

Thanks for joining in. What Resident Evil games have you played other than REmake? Just that one. And only on 'hitchhiking', which is why I want to replay it, but this time on mountainclimbing, since it was a little too easy on hitchhiking. It's been long enough since my first playthrough, so I probably will get around to it soon-ish.

If you liked the atmosphere but the gameplay didn't particularly grab you in Resident Evil the series is quite varied in the latter. I'd say 4 is a good one to try.

I haven't played that many (memorable) horror games, but I'll throw my hat in anyway.
4 – Luigi's Mansion (GameCube) (2pts)
A charming little gem of a launch game, making family rated horror actually work in the Mario setting.
3 – Eternal Darkness (GameCube) (3pts) A multigenerational cosmic horror story heavily inspired by Lovecraft. 2 – Resident Evil Remake HD (PS4) (4pts) Excellent remake that updates the venerable old RE1 and surpasses the original in every way (except camp value). 1 – Bloodborne (PS4) (5pts) A marriage of Victorian horror and From's now trademark Soulsian gameplay. Visceral, intense combat and increasingly disgusting horrors and scenarios for you to overcome.
----
I think a lot of games on that list are reaaally stretching the definition of horror. I might accept Castlevania, Metroid or Doom etc, but Emperor: Battle for Dune? Grim Fandango? C'mon now.

Thanks for the votes. I'm a little surprised Eternal Darkness hadn't been mentioned before. Bloodborne has a really fantastic setting as well. For this topic we're including games people found to have a spooky vibe as well as straight up horror which is why there's more subjective choices in here and games that aren't scary.

I have no idea how I typed Hitchhiking, it's of course just Hiking, no hitch. Anyway, I did like the gameplay. But I just want to play it again on a more satisfying (hopefully) difficulty before I move on to, say, RE2. And in order to do that, enough time had to pass since the first playthrough. That's really all that's causing the delay (that and there's approximately a billion games on my to-play list).

So I've had a look at all the votes in order to do the results. Unfortunately, since this is a quiet board, the voting element didn't quite work out, but from the few voters we do have some wonderfully diverse opinions. We do have a top list, of 26 rather than 25, which I will post below. Before that, I have highlighted below some of our choices that didn't make it that high, for our honourable mentions. Thank you to dsparil, ommadawnyawn2, JoeQ, jackcaeylin, Snake and Son of Suzy Creamcheese (whom I don't know how to tag I'm afraid) - I know you put some thought into your lists. Honourable Mentions: Sweet Home - Recommended by Snake and excelsior Silent Hill 2 - Recommended by excelsior Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast - Recommended by ommadawnyawn2 Uninvited - Recommended by Snake 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors - Recommended by dsparil Devotion - Recommended by Jackcaeylin The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Recommended by Son of Suzy Creamcheese

Here are the top 26 most recommended games. Hopefully it will serve as a nice jumping on point for people who want to play some spooky games. Also, hopefully, it does not look too naff.

Nicely done! I tried to pick up some more people for this on discord but I failed. That probably helped make the list a lot more diverse though hehe.

Thank you both for the kind words. And of course thanks omma for highlighting the list on the discord.
I find that even among enthusiast circles such as this one, there are quite a lot of people who just don't play horror games. It seems they scratch a specific itch.
