As most of you likely know there was a large leak of old ROMs and data from Nintendo this year including many Beta files and unreleased versions of games. Among them is the near complete Pokemon Picross for the Gameboy Color. I've started playing it and since it's something people here are unlikely to have played I thought I'd create a thread to share details of the game and my experiences.
So at the start of the game here is the title screen and mode select screen. As you can see there are Tutorial, Easy Picross, Pokemon Picross and Pokedex modes.
So far Easy Picross and Pokemon Picross are basically the same thing. The Easy Picross puzzles represent items from the game and Pokemon Picross is puzzles of the Pokemon themselves. The games are split into area maps as below with 14 selectable puzzles which can be played in any order. When you select a puzzle you are given a Par time to beat it in. If you beat the level over the time the icon on the area map changes to a Pokeball, but beat it below par and you get a Master Ball. Get 8 Master Balls on the map to unlock the hidden fifteenth puzzle for the screen.
So far all the puzzles themselves are 10x10. I'm very early on so I'm looking forward to seeing what sizes are given later. There is the option to have a hint at the beginning of each level as per other entries in the series. It solves one column and one row for you at random.
Playing the puzzles is the same as you'd expect. One button for an x on a panel, the other for uncovering it. What is different to some entries is that each block isn't equivalent to a pixel on the image, so you can't use the image itself as a clue.
On beating a level we see briefly the black and white solution image, then it is filled in with colour.
When a Pokemon Picross is beaten the Pokemon can then be seen in the Pokedex.
I am curious to see how the puzzles progress. I will try and make some more posts of some of the later content as I go. If anyone wants to see anything particular about the game please let me know.
