I know most of us here play a lot of older games and not necessarily so many modern ones, so I just wanted to hear what eras people like to play games from the most? Any reason for those preferences?
Personally I do play a fair amount of modern games (pretty much stick to Nintendo, JRPGs and indies) but I probably play nearly as much from the PS2/Gamecube - so around 2000-2006. I find this is when 3D games had found their footing but were not so expensive to make so there was plenty of experimentation and unique games. I find I'm still discovering new games from this era regularly.

Everyone knows that gaming peaked in 1995!!!!
I play mostly 16-bit stuff with some 8-bit thrown in. It varies. I also do play a fair amount of modern games. Though even with modern consoles I gravitate towards the retro throwback stuff.
What I don't play is tons of post 16-bit games. One - I don't really have a good way to play those -most of my consoles from that era are in storage and I don't really have a dedicated game room or anything where I can justify having 10 consoles hooked up to a TV. Two - I like instant gratification in my games. PS1 era and beyond starts introducing more load times, cutscenes, tutorials - things like that.

I went through a very long period from around the mid-late '00s onwards where I pretty much only played 80s-90s games and retro style ones, mainly in 2D, having become more and more alienated with modern games partly due to other interests like music in the early '00s, partly design trends that I mostly still don't care for and partly losing contact with those I used to play and discuss contemporary games with or them mostly "moving on" from games. In the last couple of years I've been slowly catching up with some of what I missed from the '00s though, and I've also played more 32-bit era 3D games I missed out on or only played briefly before.
Still those classics are what I'm most passionate about, particularly the 16-bit era. For 8-bit I'm more picky besides certain series and genres and it's mostly the same with 32-bit. But I do enjoy the creativity on display during them.
For genres, as some here know I'm really into metroidvanias/platform adventures and by extension various AA and ARPG games and platformers, but also RTS, pre-bullet hell shoot 'em ups, some TBS and RPG games, some racing games and rhythm games. Not very into earlier RPGs and most P&C Adventures, GTA and the like, Pokemon, WW2 FPS games or MMOs.

1990-2015 with a few exceptions.

The modern era for me. 2010's, or if you want to narrow it down, the Switch. For one thing, I live in the PAL region and I like playing things on their original systems, which means importing stuff from America (usually) which is ridiculously expensive. So anything before 2000 will be much more costly. But I also tend to try to divide my purchases between old and new stuff, and so new stuff kind of automatically gets an advantage there, especially since I didn't get a decent income until 2010. Games are very long or content-heavy these days, so a single game purchase will get me tons of playtime, and the Switch is always hooked up and easy to take with me. 1990-2015 with a few exceptions. Well, in that case I'm gonna say 1970-2020 for me.

spanky - I hadn't given it any thought before but 1995 was when Yoshi's Island released so I'll consider it a reasonable assertion.

I've been mainly modern Nintendo since the Wii/DS mixed with some DOS games and a smattering of emulated games without a particular focus.

If it's older games, I play all the old stuff up to about the year 2000, or up to the age of Playstation 2 and X Box. I probably balance between playing current/modern with pre-2000's retro about equally.

Tend to play games mostly from the 32/64 bit era to today. Most games from before then I have a harder time getting into due to limited lives and continues, something I really hate (Who wants to start from the beginning?!) That's a shame as there's a lot of interesting games for retro stuff. Emulation is mostly the only way for me to enjoy them with save scumming.

I mostly played 16-bit games for years, and 32-bit games occasionally. At this point, though, the older generation that's got the most left to explore for me is the PS2 era. I feel like the PS2 has a ton of still mostly-undiscovered hidden gems. I just wish I had more time for it.

For some reason I tend to gravitate to late nineties and 2000-2010 games a lot. Even on PS4 I constantly find myself playing rereleases and remakes from those eras.
