ommadawnyawn2 - R&C3 is my favourite kind of by default since it's the only one I've seen through to the end. For some reason I never care to play games in order, but I kind of think I may end up with a worse experience going backwards on this series. retr0gamer - I played Gradius V a lot and I did play some Delta on your advice before. It's really good, but I need to pick up my own copy. dsparil - FFX - I also dislike Final Fantasy X - quite a bit in my case. Everything from character design, story, voice acting, combat, dungeons (oh God, the dungeons), blitzball. Weirdly, I found the song 'To Zanarkand' more emotional before I heard it in the context of the actual game. It was really difficult to relate to the characters though, I found them pretty hollow. Okami - Yeah, this one disappointed me also. It is beautiful and I like the gameplay, but the game constantly interrupts you with it's inane chatter. Honestly, it doesn't even get going until around 35 hours in. SotC - This one is pretty divisive (so is ICO I find). I think your statement about the overworld map is fair. For me,I just kind of forgot those issues once I got to the actual encounters. Also, I think some of the power of those would have been reduced without the large amount of quiet time. SMT Nocturne - I assume at some point you have been able to play it? That does sound like a laser issue. It's not a dual layer disc is it? Those are the only ones I have trouble with. I never played Odin Sphere, and nowadays I'm confused as to what platform I should play it on. I really don't know the difference between the PS2 and PS4 versions.

kaoru - I would have chosen Echo Night as my hidden gem, but I'd spoken about it recently so picked something else. A few I'm interested to hear more from you about : Drakengard - I don't usually see the first game recommended, Wizardry - I have this and played some, but not enough to really draw conclusions. Would love to hear why you like it so much, Haunting Ground - I don't really know much about this one. I would not recommend to play Drakengard to anyone either. It is my favorite bad game tho. The experience I just don't wanna miss. But one doesn't have to play themselves to get that. The only way to love Drakengard is to lovehate it xD With Wizardry I just really like dungeon crawlers, they have to do a lot wrong to not be at least "Ok" in my book. But Tale of the Forsaken land I really like the thick atmosphere, it's almost like playing a FromSoft game in that way. Also the gameplay has a lot of nice things to offer to make it not as barebones as the usualy JP Wiz-inspired game. It's also not too crushingly difficult. TotFS hit the exact right sweet spot of dungeon crawler appealing to me personally. Haunting Ground is really good if you are into the Clock Tower like gameplay. It's once again super atmospheric and the stage setting is great. Also Daniella is an amazing stalker.

I haven't actually played Nocturne because of the disc problems. I like all the mainline SMT games barring if… and the first Devil Summoner which is still untranslated so it is an assumption. It doesn't seem to be a dual layer game, and some that definitely are don't have any issues. It's just a really weird problem.

Atlus games at least up to the end of the PS2 era are kind notorious for the weird hack jobs made by the programmers to get them working. Lots of fantranslators complained about how hard it is to not break the game trying to do their job. And all PS2 SMTs had problems working properly as PS2Classics on PSN. Nocturne is still really iffy to get right in PCSX2.

I never played Odin Sphere, and nowadays I'm confused as to what platform I should play it on. I really don't know the difference between the PS2 and PS4 versions. Go for the PS4 version if you want to try out Odin Sphere. It runs a lot smoother, higher resolution, etc. No slowdown. Plus the gameplay mechanics are cleaned up a bit, with additional moves and attack combos.

Thanks for the kind words guys. For clarity my rule was putting everyones top 3 and anything listed 3 times in the first section, other games were in the second.
I think this only scratched the surface of the PS2 library, but just seeing it like this I know I have so much more to play on the system.

That is a cool recommendation graphic. I think I will pick up Front Mission 4, seems like it's going on ebay for just $15.

Front Mission 4 is fun but nothing special. Not a patch on Front Mission 3. My biggest issue is the stages are just way too big and take way too long.
Does have a kick ass in engine opening cinematic.
I've only played a bit of the fan translation of front mission 5 and it seems to be a much better game and more in line with FM3.

That was pretty much what I said. It isn't as good as 3 or 5, but definitely worth it for $15. That might be less than what I paid for it used.

Cool! I'll have to snatch up the fan translation of Front Mission 5 too!
If the game map pacing is about similar to Front Mission 1, then I should be pretty good with it.

Thanks Snake
For Front Mission the only experience I have is with 3. Seemed a really nice game, but everything moved too slowly for me so I dropped it. I was playing the PAL version so maybe that's the issue. The series pretty much started and ended with 3 in Europe, what a shame.
