A lot of games try to make the late game harder in order to challenge the player and test the skills they've picked up along the way. A lot of the time they go overboard and miss the mark. What end bosses did you have trouble with, that perhaps were disproportionately hard to the rest of the game? Obviously, be mindful of story spoilers. I'm starting with this guy from Ristar The timing required is really precise to attack him without taking a hit as the battle progresses. Also, he just has way too many hits that are disproportionate to what you can take. I had a real hard time with him, whereas the rest of the game is pretty much a cakewalk.

Radiant Light boss in Hollow Knight comes to mind right now (another annoyance is having to fight the relatively easy false knight before it each time). The game has other very tough bosses (not to mention the optional DLC area) but these can be made more manageable by going elsewhere and getting some upgrades and charms.
There are quite a few of these!
Some more: Märchen Maze (ARC) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Back From the Sewers (GB) including the final segment Star Guard (PC) Wonder Boy in Monster World/Monster World III (MD, E/U versions only) Undead Line (MSX) if you use the spreadshot

I just beat Megaman 7. A relatively easy game even compared to the rest in the series but the final boss is utter bullshit. His first form isn't so bad but you still end up taking a few hits anyway because it expects you to dodge two enemies while trying to damage him. The second form however can fuck right off. It fires out 4 projectiles that move in a strange way and it's very hard to dodge them consistently. You really have to know what you are doing in this phase and have full E-tanks to stand a chance.

I don't know if it's quite in "unreasonable" territory, but the final boss of Skyward Sword is a good deal tougher than anything else in the game. That, combined with the fact I sort of hated the game overall caused me to drop it before beating the boss.
The final boss of Final Fantasy IV (DS) broke me. I know the game was made more challenging, but I grinded to like level 80 and I still couldn't beat him.

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon has the absolutely most annoying final boss in the series and is so much more difficult than anything else in the game.
FFX's is worse for the fact that you have to go through that weird sequence before the final boss every single time.
Mega Man 7's is a huge pain. The game had a ridiculous short development period, but the final boss was a very conscious choice and not the result of inadequate play testing.
Romancing Saga's on SFC (not sure about the remake) is a complete and total nightmare. I have no idea how anyone is even supposed to finish it if you're either not on the neutral path.

If I want to think specifically about hard final bosses, I'm thinking about games where I was stuck on the final boss for a disproportionally long time compared to what it took me to beat the rest of the game. Mortal Kombat II (Kintaro) and Mortal Kombat III (Shao Kahn) come to mind.
And if it's not about a boss character per-se, but also about the last part of the game in general - then there is the original Skyroads game, which has 30 levels, and level 30 is like, an order of magnitude harder than the rest of the game.

I recently played Joe & Mac: Lost in the Tropics, and not only the final boss in 2 phases is vastly more difficult than every other boss, which are extremely easy (except for one), for being unpredictable and knocking you across the room; it also comes after a boss rush with no restoring bonuses of any kind. A really unneeded difficulty spike for what has been a walk in the park up to that point.

Interesting topic. I've played Mega Man 7 plenty of times and the final boss doesn't bother me too much as I mastered the fight.
If I can add a little something that might not be related here but it deals with final bosses and that's lackluster final bosses in RPGs. I consider the final boss in rpgs to be special or even epic to say the least and I expect a good fight but there have been times when I fight one and it just feels like a normal boss fight. I've only encountered this four times in my life and they are very disappointing. The games are....
Final Fantasy NES Wild Arms Breath of Fire Lufia 2 Rise of the Sinistrals
Seriously, I found the final battle against the Dragon Lord in the original Dragon Warrior to be more epic then the ones I've listed above.
A few years ago I played through Final Fantasy 10 and I'd thought the final boss was going to suck as from what I've read online but I found it rather satisfying.

I was going to mention Final Fantasy X. I may have missed something but I needed to do a few hours of grinding to beat it. Really not a fun grind either since battles are so repetitive in that game. Another couple of RPGs that gave me some difficulty were Xenoblade X and 2. I think the player is expected to make use of all the games mechanics in order to beat those. Agree with Mortal Kombat II. Also that reminded me M.Bison in Street Fighter II Turbo was really tough, I couldn't beat him at more than level 5 difficulty. ommadawnyawn2 - how come the avatar change? I think it's going to take me some getting used to. Like a new haircut.

I beat it, but the final boss of Lost Kingdoms definitely jacked up the difficulty in what was otherwise a relatively easy game. A lot of this is because the fight changes the mechanics in a way that can render a lot of your cards useless and really punishes you for any mistakes. Not helped that every try you have to beat the final level and the easy but annoying second to last boss before it.

Mortal Kombat II (Kintaro) and Mortal Kombat III (Shao Kahn) come to mind. I probably rented Mortal Kombat II at least half a dozen times as a kid and played it obsessively. I can count the number of times I've beaten Kintaro on one hand. On Very Easy mode even! The AI of those games makes them miserable single player experiences.

I actually broke a GB pocket screen over MK2's final boss back in the day. Good times?

I played MKII on Game Gear and I think I only managed to beat it once.

New year, new avatar! But you can still imagine the meateater lady knocking on the new one from behind if you want. Well, I use people's avatars to make assumptions about the people behind them, so if you're going to tell me you're not some impulsive, ravenous carnivore then my entire perspective is shaken.
